Lot of blame to go around

Nov 6, 2022, 10:39 AM

I’m hearing bad coaching and bad QB play and so on, but in my mind this gets fixed rather quickly when we get guys that can win at the LOS.

Hearing about all this NFL talent on DL but they got 265 put on them last night from an unranked ND team. They consistently show they cannot get off blocks.

This game went about like what I thought it would have gone against a Bama, Ga, or OSU. Until we can can win our 1 on 1’s up front I honestly don’t give a xxxx who is coaching. Sometimes you have to man up and win your one on ones and we did not win many.

You can’t compare any of our wins against what we faced last night. They just lined up and run it down our throats.

Reminded me of Clemson teams from the 80’s minus the option. We did not pass very often because we did not have to. The opposition for most games were gassed when the 4th quarter hit.

Our current QB is not a world beater by any means but he is far from what I consider to be bigger issues and that is the OL and DL’s.

Same thing in the Ga-TN game. Ga won on both sides of the ball.

Agreed and not sure we cannot recruit a dominant OL.

Have we missed on some guys in recruiting.

We need to be winning some recruiting wars against Ga. They seem to be raking in anyone that they want.

Will agree to disagree. Wes was not out there not getting off blocks like our DL was all night. You won’t win with giving up 5-6 yards a carry. Never

Our current DB’s do not allow us to stack the box. ND running backs were begging for carries because they knew we were not stopping them.

Good OL play by ND made their coaches look great I guess. Heck all they had to do was bring in a 3rd TE and hand it off.

Wes needs to get off the sidelines and back in the press box where he can really see the formations and make decisions faster. He just seems lost on the sidelines and the box is where he is most comfortable.

I disagree that we don't have enough talent on defense.

All four of our starting DLs will probably get drafted, and so will our starting LBs, Mukuba and Wiggins. That's like 8-9 future NFL guys.

The problem is coaching and development.

If you think it's bad now, wait until next year.

Not seeing it PBT. We played against better talent. Their OL was better than anything we seen this year and their rb’s were consistently getting to our 2nd level.

Needed a Grady Jarrett last night.

Bresee gets double teamed consistently so I can’t say much about that but would think that would make someone else’s job a little easier.

I’m not going to throw shade at Bresee because he has been through a lot more than most people go through at his age during this season, but he hasn’t looked the same this season and understandably so. He looked like he was jogging last night. I hate to for him.

I blame myself. I didn't cheer hard enough. We had bye week. But I didn't prepare. I did even do to Publix until right before the game. Even then I just got some hot dogs. Nothing special.

I didn't even fly the flag on my car. Just didn't see this coming.

I listen to radio and Dabo always has an interview before kickoff.

Needed to win the TO battle and win in the rushing game. We were not close on either of those.

Issue is coaching and player development. We get less out of more talented players than anyone. WR coaching is horrible. Justyn Ross went from a can’t miss prospect under Scott to undrafted under Grisham. QBs don’t get any better under Streeter. Last QB that got better from our coaching was Boyd. Dabo has made a complete mess with the staff hiring only former players. There are other quality coaches out there. Maybe go hire the people who kick our #####. That’s a pool of applicants that’s going to be growing quite a bit over the next several years.

Our wide receivers are average. Part of our QB issue this year is lack of separation on their parts.

Again lots of blame to go around just don’t see us beating many teams that can just hand the ball off between the tackles and avg 5-6 a carry.

rhpltmeg® ... You make a lot of astute points. Agree with most. Two questions: Would BV have made a difference? And, how much of a factor is Dabo's risk aversion to only using the outside 20% of each sideline in passing game a factor for WR's and TE's?

Re: Lot of blame to go around

Nov 6, 2022, 11:55 AM

Seen BV struggle as well against better talent (OSU and LSU) so I’m not sure just because I was seeing us not getting off of blocks. I think Eason is a good DL coach. Someone with a higher IQ than myself may could have figured out another scheme to stop the run.

The offense needed to establish the run imo and I believe that would have helped on those down the field throws.

Lot of areas of concern. Besides TE and RB I’m not sold on being elite at any other position. I do feel Bresee is elite but that line has not met expectations. I know we will have DL drafted no doubt but I’m not seeing the shut down defense I guess I was expecting this year.

Did not believe a new DC could mess up with the talent we have on the DL.

Not sure if answered any of your ?’s lol. Like I say just my .02 cents.

Again there is plenty of blame to go around. These lines in my mind needs to be game changers if we want to get back to a championship.

If it is some coaching issues then I pray they get corrected but being first year coaches I’m guessing they may have long leashes.

It’s not on DL.

12 and 13 formations allow them to double block on both sides of any hole they want to create and we didn’t have an answer with either odd man fronts (5 on the line) or with the LBs filling gaps well enough.

Our OL is another story.

Our DL gets held as I’m guessing most do but that reminded me of the WF game. Just stay on blocks way too long.

It was a given to me in watching that they would run to our 2nd level.

To me that was the worst way to lose a football game.

If a Grady Jarrett type DL (not highly recruited 3 star) would have been in there you would have seen a different ballgame. That was a run stopping machine.

One of our DL allowed the punt block. 33 you know I’m not going to try and spell his name but he did not even attempt to block the guy coming up the middle that blocked the punt.

Coaches had him lined up in the right spot he just flat out missed the block.

They scored one TD on us in the first half. One.

They didn’t score again until the 4th Qtr.

Not sure if you remember, but the score was 28-0 in the 4th qtr. 21 of those weren’t on the D at all!

The bigger issue is the goose egg we had on the board through 3 quarters!

Blame on both sides, but again they ran for 265. They could have scored 15 points and won hell we couldn’t get them off the field.

TOP was 33-27 and out rushed 265-90.

That tells me we could not stop the run and our OL could not open holes to run.

My point is ND stayed on the field because they were eating up big chunks of the clock because they were running at will.

I will agree our O is nothing to brag about, but just a post about how I felt last night watching our lines getting beat on both sides.

Not trying to argue, just my perspective.

Nov 6, 2022, 11:28 AM

I’m not saying our D looked great… they didn’t.

FWIW- here’s my take on how the game unfolded:

Couple good stops early. They had early points off special teams and they had a strategy of lulling us to sleep with the 3 yard run only to set us up for the big plays later. We were playing them as such and wouldn’t commit 8 in the box to stop the 3 yard runs. With 3 TEs on the line, you can look like a jumbo set and the next thing you know, they have 4-5 receivers running routes. And conceivably at least one is going to be a big mismatch. I think we did enough on D to win that game.

The offense on the other hand gave up as many points as they scored and some of that was garbage time! Another perspective is the fact that the offense gave up as many points as the defense. That’s the problem and that’s what needs to be fixed.

You cannot win ANY football game if your net offensive production equals ZERO!

I agree with most of your points but the main point of this post was to emphasize our need to be able to win our one on ones up front.

If we run for 190 instead of 90 that would open that passing game on up.

I’m old school and to win against better teams you need to be able to run the football and stop the run.
