Lost my last grandparent at 2:15 this morning.

My dad and his brother and sister were with her in Columbia. I woke up from a dead sleep, eyes wide open, about 10 seconds before my dad texted me at 2:21.
She has always been the matriarch of the family. Strongest-willed woman I have ever met, and somebody you simply did not cross. She whooped me more than a few times as a boy. I always knew when I was in trouble because it was always my first and middle name in "that voice". For as strong and ornery as she was my entire life, I could never imagine this day. But the last few years have made us realize how cruel age can be, as we watched her mind slip away. Even a few years ago, she barely knew names, and vaguely recognized faces outside of her own children. The last few weeks have been mostly unconscious, with occasional waking moments and a clear word here and there. Age ravages the mind.
She spent most of the last year in a nursing home after my angel of an aunt finally couldn't manage her by herself any longer. She didn't like it there, and always asked to go home, to the house she lived in for 53 years in Columbia. Two weeks ago today, the staff finally transported her home.
I got to sit with her and hold her hand last weekend. She was in pain from an arm broken in 3 places, a wound on her leg, breast cancer, and everything else on the list that you can't fix on a 91 year old human. Her grip was tight, and even though she didn't really know who I was, I could see some comfort in her eyes. She was scared, and I've never seen her afraid of anything.
This is a relief for everybody. She's at peace now.
Rest easy, Grandmother.

Glad you got to spend some time with her last weekend, and it sounds like she lived a long, full life before the affects of age caught up to her. Anything I can do for you, let me know.

I'm spending a couple extra days in Greenville this week before heading to the beach just to see my 90 year old grandmother and grandfather. Your eloquent post is going to spur me to treasure that time even more---I appreciate it, and I'm glad you got some time with her at the end of a very full life.

What unintentionally ended up looking like a "OH MAN, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT ME!" reply was intended to be relaying to you that your moving eulogy about your grandmother grew into something bigger by having an effect on me that I will in turn do something with, but I probably just ended up looking like a diik.

The #### joke in my response was the fact that I was pretending to be all tough when in fact my feels were crying.

Lost a grandfather earlier this year and my other 2 years ago. Both were late 60's/early 70's. I'll be lucky to live past 70

Find peace in the memories of the good times
Jun 6, 2017, 10:11 AM

My grandmother's biggest fear was that we would remember her in the nursing home.
Soonish find a picture of her doing something she loved and put it where you'll see it often. That will help strengthen the good memories over the more recent ones.

it's difficult to see a parent/grandparent on that slow road down, sometimes very unpleasant. Been there with you. Heck I'm there now, as my mother is in about the same situation as she was. Every time the phone rings, I expect it to be "the call".
Always appreciate the love she had for you & the influence she had on shaping who you are today, and make her proud. That's the best way to honor her, and the only thing she would ever want you to do.

I'm sorry for your loss. I posted yesterday about how I just lost my grandfather. It always hurts to lose a loved one. At least they are in a better place.

grandparents have been gone for years. But still remember those feels. My Dad's mother raised 3 kids working in a sewing sweat shop near Bowersville, Ga, after my grandfather died young. I was always much closer to her than my mother's parents, who passed when I was much younger. She died about a year after I graduated from Clemson. I still think of her every time I cook scrambled eggs, with a splash of half and half and a couple sprinkles of dry mustard, just like she taught me.

There's part of her in you and your family, and they're all better people for it. That will always be there. Stay strong, brother.
