It was much better and more interesting when : 1. You had to sit out a year to transfer. 2. There was no "Direct " payments to players. 3. There were only 8 teams ( except big 10) in a conference. 4. There were no playoffs and the voters selected a NC and we could argue about it. 5. There were no Conference bowl alignments and we could get cross country matchups. 6 No opting out of Bowl games. 7 You had to win 8 games for a Bowl. No participation trophies ! 8. Coaches were NOT the highest paid state employees.
It certainly made for a more exciting December and New Years Day Bowl Games ! Now it's pretty BLAH to be honest. And the only music at games was the BAND !!!

I was at CU from 1965 to 1969, and there were two givens: our "bowl"

each year was the Clemson-South Carolina game, as it was theirs. Secondly, our home games were typically about one p.m., as there would have been riots had they tried to start them later. Why? Because we had huge CDA dances on Saturday evening, and no one wanted to miss those! Sure, we brought dates to campus for the weekends, but they came primarily for one reason: the dances! lol
We played our neighbors every year with only an occasional venture some distance, so games were easy to travel to and from. You're right: an invitation to a bowl meant something. And your team members, each and all, were dedicated to their schools, mixed in well with the atudent body and usually walked the same stage after four years to get their diplomas.

Yessir, I agree with most of those. I do like the playoffs though, considering Clemson has been a top 3 program at it historically.

4. It was night and day worse. It is way better now. 8. I couldn't care less if the coaches are tne highest paid.
The rest I completely agree with you about.
