(or someone like him) than win without him.

I'm not saying I blame the kids for wanting to cash in. I'd be hard-pressed to persuade the 18-year-old version of myself not to do the same thing.

But if Clemson football falls back into mediocrity (from a win/loss standpoint) and yet remains a beacon on a hill (from a priorities and integrity standpoint), I'd be okay with it.

Give me 85 guys who see playing for Clemson as a privilege instead of a quick payday, I'll pull for them all day, win or lose.

In fact, it has nothing to do with Dabo.

It has everything to do with D-1 selling its soul a long time ago for the almighty dollar.

Clemson does an outstanding job recruiting players who are capable of doing well in the classroom. Even though the AARC got a lot of criticism in the past, the objective of the committee is good: evaluate potential student-athletes academically to ensure that they have a good chance of graduating from Clemson.

Dabo also does an outstanding job prioritizing players’ attendance in class, having mandatory study hours, and putting them on a path to making good grades and graduating. I love this about him.

Nonetheless, Clemson still accepts a lot of players who would not have a chance of getting into Clemson if they weren’t great at a sport. That’s not just a Clemson problem, it’s a division I big time sports problem. But I feel that colleges are being hypocritical to act like academics matter when they know they are accepting subpar students only because they are good at a sport. Many of these players major in “athlete-friendly” majors and have a ton of advantages regular students don’t have such as tutors, testing accommodations, etc.

for the basketball team. That's true enough. But it's buying a lot of players. And in Clemson basketball, I do believe portal/NIL is a necessary tool given the one-and-done rule, and the ridiculously tough ACC recruiting cycle.

And I think if Swinney went great guns on NIL and the portal, I bet it'd buy a couple or three more trophies to put in the case over at Reeves.

I'm saying I don't mind it if Swinney doesn't do that, and the trophies don't come, because I believe in the long run, the program may be better off.

I'm fairly indifferent to whether the basketball program uses it.

I think it's fair to argue that much of the increase in Clemsons application numbers and national visibility is directly related to wins on the football field. Why not participate in NIL/portal, win titles, and improve academics all at the same time? Settling for an average football program impacts more sports than just football, and has an economic impact as well as an academic impact. While I agree with Dabos argument, the recent results are not confidence inspiring. All good coaches innovate and adapt. This is beginning to look like a failure to adapt.

That don't even make sense, those clauses in his contract that gets his salary to the full 11.5 million means that he has to at least make it to the higher levels of winning, and everything that he has accomplished to this point still brings him an added price to his contract. Without the championships his salary wouldn't be anywhere near that 11.5 million. If Dabo was to leave for another school, what he has accomplished at Clemson will be added to a contract as his value even on a new contract at another school. If it didn't, he would remain at Clemson bc he would never agree to a contract for less than what he gets at Clemson...

Dabo's worth is bc he is known as a HC that can win championships, and that's what another school would have to pay for...

It certainly won't attract the top talent and won't be worth paying a coach the highest salary in CFB. THOSE 7-5, AND 8-4 SEASINZ WILL SOON BECOME 5-6 AND 6-6 SEASONS ONCE THE TALENT COMPLETELY DRIES UP.

Why do you consider it greed when a player acts what he thinks is in his best interests? If a player chose a school over Clemson for academic reasons, would that be greed? There is or close to 85 scholarship players on a college FB team, and everyone of those expect to get something, and without the needed big businesses in and around Clemson, he won't be bringing in the NIL money as the schools that are located in big cities where there are a lot of businesses that are willing to donate to that schools NIL fund or to certain big time players to support their business In Name, Image and Likeness. I'm that the burger joints donate to use the Clemson name in their advertisements, but it isn't enough to assure Dabo that he can offer a large bundle of money every year that he is playing at Clemson, and that is why with Clemson being in such a small area hurts with bringing in a lot of NIL donations for Dabo to offer the really elite athletes....

Coach DS has no involvement with NIL (isn’t that illegal?). Boost are NIL funding and give them a chance to make competitive offers to recruits.

As for the portal: It has morphed to be attached to the $$ associated with NIL. Even if CDS decided to follow the coach Sander’s portal philosophy, the NIL support must also be there.

If he doesn't want to get into bidding wars to recruit players that's fine by me. People forget that 1) he's using money towards retaining the players we have and 2) We don't have near as much money as other programs due to being in the ACC and the fact we have a relatively small alumni base compared to many. I mean there's only so much he can do when it comes to paying the players.

And no serious CLEM FB fan would be OK with that (losing with Swinney). CLEMSON will always be bigger than any one individual. If BEST is truly the standard...............

IN any realm, you have to continually modify, adapt, improve. We've already done this on things he initially didn't want to change. IMO, a bit more is needed here as well. I'm talking SLIGHT modifications are all that is needed here. We'll see what happens next.

Support CDS fully, and he certainly has earned the right to do things his way...which I think we can all agree is the "ideal." But can that "ideal" work in THIS environment? So far, based on results, the FACTUAL answer is no if you want championships. That is not debatable.

Our other sports use the portal...generally without any of the negative consequences and to their benefit. Using it lightly, like UGA/BAMA, has proven beneficial to those teams and has NOT hurt their HS recruiting or culture in the least. So far our pitch (we focus mainly on HS kids, we will protect your role, etc...) doesn't seem to reasonate with most elite kids. Some yes; most no. Maybe that changes....we hope....

Based on what I know, I am quietly confident further changes are coming. I think CDS will be here for a good while more. Thought some changes would've already occurred. We'll see what happens.....

Dabo hasn't changed, the player landscape has changed. Can thank the NCAA for opening Pandora's box and now you have the wild west. It may be that Dabo is waiting to see if there will a sense of money caps and rules before he adapts or decides to leave the game. Until then the Tigers have the winningest football coach in Clemson's history. He has earned the right for respect and loyalty to either stand with him or move out of the way. History will tell his story. Go Tigers and looking forward to this season.

Schools that can't compete with lots and big NIL donations will be better off closing down their sports programs bc that would better than being known as a school that can't win anything in sports, they are just practice dummies for the schools that do have huge NIL donations... Man you idiot are stupid tonight. What is legal is having non school affiliated funds to pay NIL… which is what recruiting is turning into. Bidding wars to pay high school athletes millions of dollars which Clemson won’t ever do (which is a good thing). We pay our current athletes money based on NIL which they deserve but we don’t pay high school kids to come here when they haven’t earned ####. I this may be difficult for for me pacific liberal tiger to grasp but the difference is dabo is a grown adult with a resume who warrants his pay versus a high school senior who hasn’t done #### doesn’t deserve it.

I’m with Clemson I will support how we do things. Pay our athletes who deserve it, give them chances at a school a lot couldn’t get into without football, and ultimately change their lives for the better. All things Clemson gsve me without playing football but the school itself.

Moral victories in sports are made up by those who lose games. I understand your point, but if the courts have ruled NIL to be legal, and every other school is playing by those rules, then what moral high ground are we upholding? If we are sitting at 4-4 again next season, with a putrid O-line, WR Corp, and below average QB play these murmurs will only continue to get louder. Clemson football is the sport the turns the entire engine of the Clemson athletic department. We need out of the ACC, into the SEC/Big 10, and to be a player in the transfer portal.

Everyone discounts covid. The school up North had a coach that sat for half the games mainly because he broke covid era regulations.
When recruits visit Clemson we have an advantage. During covid our program did not cheat. Recruiting is regaining a slight uptick which is the the main difference at the highest level.
I remind everyone of coach "O" who took us down in our last Natty effort. "O" shortly departed LSU.
FSU sure had a fine group show up in the Orange. Let's have their coach win a Natty before he's anointed.
Urban is another fine specimen. Run out of not only college but the NFL as well.
Imagine for one moment that we didn't have DS. Imagine that we were looking for a HC who has won two Natty's over the past ten years. Where is that animal?
As far as NIL money, anyone who thinks a School from upstate SC can compete with Texas, Ohio State, SoCal, Oregon, on the basis of money alone might want to rethink their thesis.
Dabo is concentrating on beating UGA. We have a stable of wonderful players who can accomplish that. Go Tigers! Beat UGA!

I appreciate the principled way in which Dabo runs our program. But I'm not okay with "...if Clemson football falls back into mediocrity...and yet remains a beacon on a hill (from a priorities and integrity standpoint), I'd be okay with it." That's basically saying we're a Vanderbilt, Duke, or Northwestern--except without the academic eliteness those programs also enjoy.

In this era more than any other, mediocrity = irrelevance, and as long as college football is relevant, Clemson must be too. The biggest trick IMO is knowing when to pull the trigger and get out of the race before the system collapses altogether.

As much as some would like to we can’t bury our heads in the sand and pretend the world isn’t changing, it is. If we don’t want to evolve we need to move to D2 or Ivy league ball and be competitive there. Being some sort of “guiding light” in D1 isn’t going to work. It sounds nice until a few years down the road you’re getting pummeled on a regular basis by teams who’ve embraced the reality of the situation.

I have to agree with you 100%.

It would not "feel-good" to fall back to mediocrity but at least it would be competing the right way for the right reasons!

No fault as you said to the kids who chase the bag! Can't blame them!

I think what you will see is another division of college ball!

NIL base and Non-NIL base programs having separate NCAA championships!

Of course, if a player emerges as good in the non-nil - they will transfer out for the money. "Perhaps"!

But, with no regulations on NIL and TP, the have less than the big alumni based schools are likely going to find it hard to compete.

It's still all about C-L-E-M-S-O - - N; so whatever i'll be there to support!
