First of all, y'all feel free to pile on. Won't bother me one bit. I'm a guest here. FSU lost. Y'all have every right to take shots at me. I assure you, I don't take it personally.
OK, as briefly as possible, here are my thoughts.
1. GT dominated the game after the opening drive by FSU. FSU had 5 rushes for 58 yards in the opening drive. 26 rushes for 40 yards the rest of the game.
2. GT OL and DL dominated, decimated and destroyed the FSU OL and DL. I gotta tell you, I was shocked. I bought the hype. I thought our OL and DL, especially the DL, were among the best in the country. GT didn't out scheme or trick FSU in the trenches. They didn't double team and finesse anything. They just put a hat on a hat and moved the opponent from point A to point B against his will. (Old school line play. Nothing fancy or cute about it.)
3. If it was schemes by GT or lack of technique by GT I wouldn't be as concerned. But it wasn't. It was just bullying. "I'm meaner and stronger than you are and I'm going to push you around all day. And there ain't nothing you can do about it." And, to pile on my concern, our LBs seemed either invisible or in the wrong gaps all day. I'm not sure how much you can improve in a few weeks when you are just bullied into submission.
4. I know y'all will disagree with me on this, but I don't think DJ was the problem. He was not great, but he was not horrible either. Considering the lack of a running game and the lack of OL blocking in general, he had a decent game. He wasn't the reason we lost. Same with RB and WR. The horrible offensive production can be placed squarely at the feet of the OL.
5. I've learned over decades not to get too high after a win or too low after a loss. FSU isn't as bad as they looked today. But, before today I expected them to be in Charlotte in December. Now, I think 8-4 would be a good season.
Matt Luke has to be very interested in the the game tape. The GT OL just manhandled our DTs without double teaming them. Our DE virtually never got pressure on King. They were horrible at setting the edge on running plays and when they did, the LB or safety managed to take the wrong gap anyway.
Well, I've said enough. That's my analysis of the state of Nole football as of today.

That was well said. You'll learn over the course of the season that the offense has to be greatly simplified for DJ. It's not his fault... he's just limited in what he can do. I now predict between 3 and 5 losses for FSU.

Well said.
I'm shocked but not bc GT had a lot of veterans retuning on the OL. They absolutely bullied y'all in the trenches all game, minus 2 drives.
DJ just has a boring energy and just makes O coordinators make boring/predicable play calls.

.... I'm thinking 8-4 would be a good season.
The better question would be where do I think the 8 wins are coming from.
I'm thinking (hoping) the OL and DL get a lot better. But, right now I see FSU being a two score underdog to Clemson (even at home) and ND. The rest of the teams, let's wait and see. I was completely wrong in my analysis of FSU. Let's see a couple of games to see how good other teams are.

I'm disappointed, but not ready to panic. I remember about 35 or so years ago we lost our opening game to Miami 31-0. Finished the season 9-2, won the bowl game and finished #4 in the nation.
I'm not panicking, but I'm not expecting that big a change either.

That was 1988. FSU went 11-1 after that loss and finished 3rd in the country. FSU-Clemson was the 3rd game of the year and the Punkroskie was executed. Ended up being a great year for FSU.

DJ didn’t lose the game. The defense couldn’t get off the field for the walk off drive. I’d be more concerned about that.

Really none of us really know until we get to see more. Lots of things can, and will, happen in the course of the season. Lots of times, even usually, the bad isn't as bad as we imagined, nor is the good as great as we imagine and hope, either. Lots of football left to be played.

All I got to say is, yall can play great the rest of the season and that will be fine! Except I really hope DJU throws 8-29 against us like he did against the Coots. Im still not convinced he didnt throw that game some how even if it was that he knew he wanted to transfer and it would be easier. Im not saying he did it for personal gain, maybe Big Dave told him to for a final big bet??? But he isnt that bad of a QB to play like he did that day!

Good observations. I enjoy your take on things so nothing bad to say, however, while DJ wasn’t the issue he also wasn’t good enough to really make a difference in the game and the GT QB was IMO. He’s just not dynamic enough to really impact the game and put the team on his shoulders when they need it. I hate to say it but I think there will be some frustrating games ahead this year. If teams lock down your run game DJ will struggle to move to ball.

If teams lock down our running game....
4

.... you are absolutely correct.
Every since Spring practice and all through August Norvell has said this is the bes OL he has ever had. His offense is predicated on run first. He also has a stalbe of good RB. Not expected to have a 1500 yard horse you can ride (like Mafah may be) but literally 6 guys who are capable of playing without a tremendous dropoff. He would like 60-65 % of the plays to be run. He loves zone, power and especially counter. Until today it was expected for FSU to get 230-250 yards per game rushing. The personnel this year was supposed to be built for his offense. The concern was supposed to be the WRs. Talented, but young and unproven.
His offense is predicated on making the D put an extra man in the box and then beat them with the pass. Today, GT managed to stuff the run and still keep only 7 in the box.

But, the differenced is last year Clemson dominated Duke and lost due to turnovers in the redzone.
FSU lost due to being slobberknocked in the trenches.
However, the degree of disappointment is very similar.

He does not have the athleticism to overcome the ineptness of the OL. And, he doesn't have the pure passing ability to pick a defense apart.
But, as bad as the OL was today, it might have taken a Lamar Jackson or Tom Brady to win.

Y'all were whipped so bad in the trenches on both sides of the ball, it's hard to evaluate the skill players or DBs. Your front 7 were horrible. DJU was the same ole DJU we had to endure. You're stuck with a very mediocre QB. Hey, this goes to show the transfer portal ain't all that. I still think they'll improve and finish better than 8-4.

Today was probably a day makes you wish could've been playing a cupcake game to break in the new pieces instead of starting w/ a conference opponent hungry for a marquee win.
Getting whipped in the trenches was definitely story of the day for y'all. While DJ didn't look spectacular, he also didn't really do anything to cost yall the game either. They ran alot of dink & dunk, didn't really show trust in downfield passing. When they HAD to at end, he was able to hit some shots.
Good thing for your boys is got 3 home games + bye week before the 2 game stretch that will make/break the preseason expectations (@ SMU, vs Clemson) to right the ship some.

I think GT played FSU the way so many teams played us when we had DJ. They were crowding the line of scrimmage and daring him to throw the ball deep. Most of his passes were the short check down throws of less than 10 yards. Sound familiar?

It's DJs job. He will start against Clemson.

Made some good throws, made some throws that WRs bailed him out, and made some throws that make you scratch your head.
The dude is not bad, but he’s just average, especially with his inability to get away from pressure.

I have been on this board since the start of this board, even if my handle does not show it (I forget my first user name), and you are by far the classiest opposing fan that has been here.
Back in the day I used to be on here for hours, now it may be once per month, so I do not see as much these days, but you have always been a good dude.

Spot on with your analysis but it’s only one game that honestly could have gone the other way if the GT quarterback had not recovered the fumble. A lot of football left.

I don’t remember him ever having a great game! When was that? Not at Clemson. FSU you are a very smart fan. It’s always great to read what you have to say. You are a REALIST. “ A person who accepts reality and prepares to deal with it according.” You remind me of my father and my grandfather, both gone now. Both loved Clemson and both were REALIST.

You're a good fan and a welcomed voice here IMHO bretfsu®. It's always nice to be able to get your informed opinion of both FSU and Clemson. Honest analysis and feedback is essential for improvement, bear in mind this was a small and unique sample size.
Do you know why DJ switched to #4, btw? I've been scouring his X and the interweb...

I think we were all waiting to see which version of DJU was going to show up. It is clear that he is just not a capable Power 5 quarterback. He is no better now than when he played at Clemson. It is not a coaching issue but rather a talent issue. He did better in the OR state system because he could run more and throw a bunch of screen passes. His downfield passes today were over or under thrown or even out of bounds. FSU also got beat in the trenches today. Tech has a good OLine. Just my $0.02.

It’s easy for people to assume that FSU isn’t as good as advertised, but I think it’s more likely that Georgia Tech is a lot better than people thought.
I won’t be surprised to see GT in the top 25 this year. That is a solid football team.

In this era of CFB the QB has to make plays to win the game against any team with a pulse. Haynes King made plays and by not making plays DJU cost you the game. The days where you can win with a game manager QB who makes no interceptions or fumbles but doesn’t really make big plays are probably gone.

I agree. Can’t just have a pulse at QB that won’t lose games. Need a QB that can take over and win games and change momentum. DJ isn’t that.
We will see this season if Cade has improved and if he has things will be good. If he also is just a guy that doesn’t lose games we are in trouble.
Early indications are Cade is better and more comfortable, I am excited to see the potential of our offense.

I won’t take any shots. I just feel you guys ran the ball great early, but GT decided to shut that down and put it on DJU. And while he played a decent game, he was not able to get it done. I don’t mean to be too critical of a Clemson grad, but DJ is FAR inferior to Jordan Travis.

What you miss is that mostly built out of the portal… when it goes bad they will not pull together and tough it out… they will just head for the hills to save themselves back into the portal… they will pack it in like this was a bad idea to begin with… just like bowl debacle last year when they got voted out.
I can’t wait until we go to Tally.

I think yours is a pretty fair analysis. Frankly, I was very surprised. This is another good lesson in not fully buying into the esecpn hype. Many times, the media doesn't really know squat, but the worst thing is they don't even know they don' know squat, but they still contend that they are experts. This could turn out to be a very interesting season. Personally, I like it when the esecpn pundits have to wallow in their pious stupidity.

Hard to judge a week 0 game in a different country. Maybe they just didn't show up and GT did. It happens sometimes especially in a situation like that. I think fSU beats GT 9 out of 10 times this year. For some reason they always seem to give FSU their best tho.

I agree that DJ wasn’t the problem and that GT controlled the line of scrimmage. DJ actually came up with big plays on 4th and long twice on the game tying drive, but the defense couldn’t stop the GT offense when it mattered. People put too much on the QB sometimes.

I agree with your take. I also see a much improved Tech. Coach Key has added more through the portal than you have the last two years. He addressed the glaring issues and has fixed them. The new defensive coordinator has really changed the dynamic on defense.
DJ played well. He made some big time throws. Those two fourth down conversions were huge. I only saw one wide open receiver he didn’t once. He threw the ball away and could have had a 15 in breaking crossing route.
The sky isn’t falling and hasn’t fell. Tech could be the class of the ACC. Crazier things have happened. You could win out and still make the 12 team playoff. Reserve judgement beyond week zero.

Even what you said is true I do believe if you had Jordan Travis as QB out there you would have still won the game. DJ may not have loss the game but he did nothing to win it. I know your hurt as I have had it over the past 3 years several times. As you say FSU was not as bad as the looked and I do look for them to rebound but not as a playoff team or ACC champ. Thanks for being so humble and honest.

Well done, Bret! You hit some nails on some heads with your analysis. It is extremely difficult to put together a new team every year with new players via the portal as was evident in the play of the OL, DL and LB play. Those positions require cohesion and aggressiveness in addition to knowledge of a system. You just don't replace those guys every year and plug and play. I predict FSU will be a tough out later in the year after these guys play together a while.

FSU is in one of the best states for high school football prospects.
Yet they use the portal heavily. Is that the right answer for a proud program like FSU?
They have looked terrible in their last 3 games.

That is a helpful, objective summary of the game. It sounds like GT may finally be back, and that is good for the ACC. During FSU's down years, it was the OL that set them up for failure. That does not mean our trip to Tallahassee will be easy, but if our team is anything like I think they will be, we should be favored. And there is no reason for us to hate DJU. He was not the winning QB we hoped he would be, but he was always a class act in winning and losing. I want him to lose to us, but I would be fine with him winning every other game.

Are you the HC, do you work on the offensive or defensive side of the ball, if the answer is yes, you should have done a better job, if the answer is No, well then nobody can hold you responsible for how any part of that game went for the good or the bad...
What gets me with most fans, is if the team that you pull for loses they act as if somehow you had something to do with how it went. But if the team you pull for wins, they won't give the fan any credit for the win.
I don't blame you for what happen, I'm just glad that FSU lost the game, and as a Clemson fan I'm supposed to be happy about their loss and I am!!!

I remember almost every game that we won and lost with DJU at quarterback being "not his fault" laying blame on the OL, running game, receivers, etc. IMHO I strongly believe that in this day and age if you don't have a legitimate threat at the QB position to hit the deep pass or break out with a long run it adds undo pressure to the rest of the offense. DJU simply does not present that threat, so the offensive numbers for FSU suffer. For your sake I hope that Norvell will abandon that sinking ship faster than Swinney did.

Interesting that you said
"I know y'all will disagree with me on this, but I don't think DJ was the problem. He was not great, but he was not horrible either. Considering the lack of a running game and the lack of OL blocking in general, he had a decent game. He wasn't the reason we lost. Same with RB and WR. The horrible offensive production can be placed squarely at the feet of the OL."
He may not be the problem, but I find it ironic that, by my count, you represent the 3rd college football fanbase that has said this about DJ.

Very similar to the Clemson/Duke opener last season... got punched in the mouth and dominated in the trenches. Not sure if this comparison was already made (didn't read the thread.)

Honest assessment, I cannot disagree. I thought the D over-pursued on several plays and got burned on cutbacks...
Your correct DJ did not lose the game, the play calling seemed to drive his throws most of the time (hot reads).
We have no room to bash FSU after our opener last year...
Hoping for a good result Saturday, no one should base this year off last year there is now experience in Riley's offense and everyone should be healthy going into week 1... Wesco and Moore are legit and can only open things up.
Good luck Monday night...

I didn't see the game but how much of the GT defensive dominance was due to knowing DJU wasn't accurate downfield? I believe that hurt us with DJU.

You know, I would probably root for DJ alil more to succeed if it wasn't for his dad and all his remarks of blaming everyone but his son.
