Let's say Hunter Johnson becomes the starter at some point this year

And leads us to the playoffs. Does he get the starting job over Trevor Lawrence when he comes in the next year, Assuming Trevor is all he's hyped up to be and shows out in camp next spring and fall?

If HJ is good enough to start and then Trevor comes in and unseats him as a freshman, that means Trevor is really good and we are set at QB.
If HJ is good enough to start and then beats out Trevor and all the other QBs again, that means that Hunter is really good and we are set at QB.
I'm not sure it is worth discussing more than that at this point because we just have no clue what is going to happen.

It's not very complicated.. whoever is evaluated as the best quarterback leading into next season will start. Not sure how much else there is to it than that. Wouldn't make any sense for the coaches to do anything else.

I'm not qualified to answer that, but my guess would be YES - he would deserve to remain as the starter until some event changes that.
That said - I might be one of the few that actually thinks HJ will become the starter this year. So far, I have not seen anything that made me think otherwise. IMO - nobody is better than HJ right now, and he should start on day 1. But Dabo knows best.

Seriously we haven't even made it into fall camp this year. There are too many scenarios that could be played out before TL even arrives on campus and even more could happen after he gets here.

Here is what I would like to see happen. Right now, we have the receivers and possibly an O line that could help Hunter Johnson look like a 7 star QB if he is as good as advertised coming to Clemson. And it would be awesome if Trevor Lawrence would be ok with red shirting as long as H J kept our offense moving without skipping a beat. But if HJ fell on his face, we could take the RS off T L and let him give it a shot, but let the two of them fight for the starting job after this coming season. But if the wheels didn't come off Hunter Johnson and he remained the starter and TL be the back up, it would be possible to win a NC with both of those two QBs. Hunter would leave after his Jr season to the NFL, and that would give Trevor two years as the starter. If Clemson won a NC with it's last 3 starting QBs, Clemson would be like a Bama in the ACC and continue recruiting some of the best talent in the country for a long time to come. Hopefully that is what Dabo and staff has planed for our Tigers. It's good to dream, and I've dreamed about our Tiger being the best in the country for a very long time. Hopefully those dreams are coming true for all of Tiger Nation that has had the same dreams as I for years, and we have gotten close. Gooooo Tigersssss, it's time to turn dreams into reality!!!! Now that is a h&ll of a dream, but it is possible. If it can happen for Bama, it can happen for little ole Clemson!!!

Redshirting someone like TL doesn't make sense to me. He's as close to a guaranteed 3 and done guy as you can get (imo), so you might as well play him in mop-up duty and get him at least a few college reps his first year.
Only way he doesn't end up in the NFL after 3 years would be due to injury (imo), but in that case, he'd still have a 4th year of eligibility. Also, if he has injury issue a few years in a row, he could probably redshirt one of those years. Just doesn't really make sense to redshirt most of these insanely talented 5-star guys as freshmen unless they need the time to bulk up

Well, TL could be a 2 year starter without red-shirting if HJ left after his Jr year, but I'm sorry for interrupting your dreams... carry on!

When you take a step back and think about it, imagine how mentally tough Chase Brice must be to come to Clemson. A top 20 QB out of high school that chose to jump head first into this loaded QB situation... glad he's on our team.

Yes, Chase Brice is impressive. Obviously not afraid of competition but sounds like he Really wanted to come to Clemson. Dedicated to being a tiger even as a backup.

That's really not that bold of a prediction in today's game. It's like saying if Georgia gets Corral or Fields. One of those two or Fromm will be transferring. It's how college football in 2017 works.

Starting jobs are not awarded on hype or number of stars. Starting jobs are awarded based on performance so TL would need to earn the job
