Legal immigration wage rate in SC

Is $14.68/hour and the farmer provides them a place to live, pays the utilities, and the immigrants don’t pay any taxes. This is all thru the government H2A guest worker program. We need them in agriculture but the hourly wage is high considering everything other than food is provided and they don’t pay income taxes

This is my major concern. I work for a company that has about 30 openings starting at 20/hr. We pay 1.5 over 40 and double time on Sunday. Normal production workers can earn 75k plus a year. We have now been forced to partner with a company and bring in immigrants to fill the jobs that Americans will not.do. I agree that immigration control is needed, but Americans have become extremely lazy and jobs must be done!!!

You have to supply daily transportation to and from work and you have to take them to grocery store once a week as well.

My buddy used them for 2 yrs, bought a house to room 5 of them. They are required to return home for like 30days a year but are not guaranteed re-entry. My buddy has had 5 same for 2 years but they are at border trying to enter legal and they have been stuck for 2mos now due to backlog and my buddies prime planting season is now! He is hurting for labor.

Worked for a landscape company back in 2010 when immigration was doing a qc check campaign in the upstate….had to hire Americans for a period of about 10 months until our amigos got their paperwork squared away… for 5 positions we went through about 40-45 people that we hired and they either quit bc work was too hard, not reliable to show up, or just were a safety liability. Funny story, One guy I remember who was pretty solid had just gotten released from prison worked for 2 weeks and was doing great, great attitude, really reliable and skilled and out of the blue just quit and told us he’d rather go back to jail than to be out in that hot sun doing this work… after that summer I was convinced that American made hard workers are hard to come by. We had some good dudes on staff that had been with us for years but the average regular Joe just doesn’t have the skills and the toughness to work that type of job.they come in talking like they can but after a couple of days or weeks they show otherwise.

It's both the work and the pay rate.

It's not hard to find work for $15/hour that doesn't include back breaking outside labor.

and mostly unskilled labor is for people who aren't educated or skilled and, surprise surprise, they may not be reliable.

Because if they were they'd have skills and an education...

The people I know that were doing landscaping or roofing either got out of it because the pay rate went so low due to illegal immigrant competition or they hired crews of immigrants to do the work while they supervised.

When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s migrant workers would come through and pick tomatoes every summer. They worked much faster and did better work than locals. At that time they were paid based on how much they picked, not by the hour. They were provided housing and bussed to the grocery store where I worked. They did the job quickly and efficiently and moved on to the north to be ready for the next crop.

Yr right, hard workers but smart people. Have their own businesses and the template was already thru agriculture. So all needed was 1 legal to put business in and now the labor market is flooded. Usually the all Mexican/Latinos get things done quickly now but price is competitive but quality is crap because the majority of workers are super green.

First when u had illegal/undocumented workers they had no to limited options for work because of guys like u. Not that u don't serve a useful purpose.
Then during the time period u say ur illegal/undocumented workers had to get "legal" is just jargon for work visa which u more than likely sponsored. Thus putting them back in ur loving arms.
Also I can imagine u had housing, transportation, etc... making them even more dependant on u. If u r central/south American then I guess its ok u use ur people? Idk

But the natural citizens for those months u wanted the same loyalty, drive, etc... from them without having dire consequences hanging over their heads but u didn't so u figured u would find the most desperate legal workers. Preyed on recently released prisoners, prob didn't drug test or background, halfway houses etc...

If u respond please give more insight before bashing low collar workers.

I still enjoy yr other post el tigre! I hope me keeping it real didn't ruin a possible friendship or atleast neutral attitude.

To all the particulars as far as work status’s Of all the guys we had. Those guys had worked there for years. They did go they the H2A program afterward I believe. I was just the design build sales guy. But I can assure you there was no preying going on. It was a great group of guys and was during a turbulent economy. But I can for sure tell u it wasn’t bs. Sounds ridiculous I know and felt ridiculous as well. outside labor is not for everyone. And if you’re green you obviously start at a lower rate. So your pool of employees is not the cream of the crop. Had a handful that stuck it out and turned out to be solid. But a whole host that said no thanks after a couple days. The guys who had legal issues and were seeking work was from a local church ministry. Don’t mean to dog anybody… just reporting what I saw. It was really eye opening.

But it's common knowledge that illegal/undocumented workers are preyed on in vast majority in the work place.
Ive been in the business of construction, property management, service management, commercial, residential (pre sales and post sale), single family and multi family housing my entire adult life and have seen almost all hispanic/Latino illegal/undocumented workers just get shafted by companies from top to bottom. I've been on properties where a Latino (construction = reno to end cleaning) business owner had 20 plus 3 bedroom units on 1 property were stacked with 30 or more pallets and twin mattresses on the floor. Another property less than 5 miles away had over 50 units just like that and I was doing the yearly preventative logs so I had pulled all unit keys and the guy was so mad that I had to go in each unit that he made sure he kept me in sight and was at each unit he housed when I got there. I finally told him that I wasn't there to ruin his day but if he didn't leave me alone that I would take pictures and let the Corp know he was atleast subletting. He left me alone after that. I actually ended up being pretty decent friends with him.
I got more stories of stuff like that than I care to know. I wouldn't share the actual horror stories on here.
But I remember the crackdown about 15 yrs ago. That pallet company down 385 got stung with some serious monetary penalties. Either shut them down or it was sold and ran by another company.
I edited that post at the bottom to let people know when I said u I meant ur company.
I'm glad ur company isn't one of thenones that prey on those situations. Ur a nice enough guy for me to believe u wouldn't work for a chit company... hopefully no hard feelings brother.

These guys were hard working men with families, great attitudes, wanted to work as much as we'd allow, and taught me alot about the industry. That's less than minimum wage in some parts of the US. Good luck finding American citizens who are willing and able to do that kind of work all year for less than $15/hour, even with housing provided. I'm guessing the housing isn't exactly luxurious, either. Not making them paying Medicare and Social Security taxes seems fair enough, considering they'll never benefit from those programs.

No, I hire them every year. Last year it was $13.67/hr, this year it’s $14.68. They’ve raised the rate close to 50% since I started using them in 2017.

And the government makes the process to get them here so tedious that you end up paying the labor agent $10,000.00 to get you through it.

You can’t find American workers because they make more going to the post office every month.

The legal guest workers are just part of the total farm work force. They estimate 40% are undocumented in farming. In construction, it’s about 25% undocumented. In food processing, including meatpacking, it’s also about 25% undocumented.

One out five workers is an immigrant, legal or not. The country can’t succeed without them, unless we convince lazy Americans to actually work the hard jobs.

The wage has to keep pace with local unskilled wages so the program can’t be seen as taking jobs from citizens. Most citizens aren’t willing to do hard work for that type of wage when they can work in service industries for the same wage or a little less. It will go up next year too.

I started a project last April in Nebraska and on day one we had 35 H2B workers come in. They worked all summer up until about Oct. 1 (or near that date) when they had to go home. We rented them brand new apartments, provided transportation (meals, I think) and they were treated extremely well. This was all outdoor landscape construction and they were super talented at their particular jobs, running equipment, shoveling, driving tractors, etc. I am not sure what they were paid, but I know it was at least $15.00 per hour and I suspect more. One of the foremen was a former chef at the Prairie Club, a fine golf club in Valentine, Nebraska, and told me he preferred working on a golf course construction crew than cooking. Of course, he was our designated cook when we grilled for the crew.
