Lefty was a character ...

Feb 14, 2022, 9:59 PM

Almost excepted the Clemson job I heard one time. Wow, what could have been...

I am checking out his bio and he was great at Davidson. Hard to believe what a great history Davidson has. He took Davidon to the Elite 8 back to back years, his final 2 there. Then his 4th year at Maryland he took them to the Elite 8. The three years before he missed the tournament. Anyway, he is 90 now.

Yeah he developed a very good program at Davidson. Almost excepted the NC State job in the 60s. It was a shock when he took the Maryland job since he was from NC. Maryland really wanted to win. It was losing program before he got there. Just like Clemson.

Sad to,say, but yes ...

Feb 15, 2022, 11:30 AM

As good as Frank Howard was for football, he was absolutely awful for basketball.

My family was very close to the Howards when I was a kid. He was a great personality and built the foundation for today’s football success, but he was in no way a visionary when it came to the total Clemson athletic program.

Maybe he felt we couldn’t be good at everything and needed to apply our focus to what was in his view our core competency.

I don’t know ...

But, episode #2 of the ACC documentary shows just what was lost by letting Press Maravich to leave over a small salary disputes ... coupled with a complete lack of overall financial support for Clemson hoops.

Press was brilliant, as the documentary explains. Once he got to NC State, he shined because he the players, the facilities and the support he needed. If Pete could have played at NCSU, Press wold have been there for his career.

If Clemson had paid and supported Press ... and ... if Pete has been a better student, the entire history of Clemson basketball would be vastly different.

So many “what-if’s” ...

Grew up in Columbia during McGuire days. Still see in my mind the front page of State newspaper’s picture of Lefty being held while John Ribock got ready to swing. Maryland-USC basketball games were epic!

Great line on Lefty by Tates Locke, "get me to the last 4 minutes even with him and I will outcoach that S#$" or something close to that.

He was, and one helll of a basketball coach.***

We have to look forward to making Basketball like Softball

Feb 14, 2022, 11:42 PM

We can turn it around quickly with the popularity of The Clemson brand & reputation of our Football program if we all believe & approach it forgetting the past and expecting the best in the future like we did with softball ??

We have the facilities but we need to recruit as if we are starting over expecting to be great! This can be done if we all approach it a totally new mindset, forget our history but anticipate an incredible future.

Whatever happened to all the really big guys like 7'4" Tom McMillan, Tom Burleson, Ralph Sampson, Artis Gilmore? Teams mostly do not have the giant post players that once dominated defensively in the paint.

74 NC State with Burleson, David Thompson and 5'7' Monte Towe was a great team.

Found some extended video on the video clips from The Tournament on ACCN on Lefty Drisell. Really interesting and shows what made him tick.

I used to love the way he would throw up his hands if something didn't go his way. Then all the student section would mock him by doing the same thing.
He was a character.

The student section would also wear bald caps or shower caps to mock his bald head.
