Leftie nuts vs. Rightie nuts
11

One of the frustrating parts about being an independent in a more polarized than ever political climate, one where two factions think an election is the Super Bowl, is dealing with the wing nuts on each side who automatically assume you're on the other side if you don't live the way they do.
I don't really think we have any leftie nuts on this particular board given the demographics, but I've come across my share in life: -A coworker attending an event at my house lost her mind when she learned we didn't recycle because we didn't want to pay extra. -A young one accused me of "mansplaining" because I was telling her how to do something she didn't know how to do. -I've experienced the pronoun silliness on more than one occasion. -Arguments about trans athletes; I still believe it's unfair to female athletes to allow trans people to compete in sports like swimming, basketball, etc. -I've been given #### by lefties for driving a truck or an SUV and told I was contributing to the problem. -I don't usually catch any hell over gun ownership in SC, but when traveling to other parts of the country and interacting with colleagues, I usually encounter strong anti-gun rhetoric. So much that I often don't even mention that I own any. -Going to California last year and getting ugly looks from people wearing masks because I wasn't wearing one. -Met someone years ago in a bar (he was a friend of a friend) who pitched a fit when I mentioned that I had shot a squirrel earlier that day.
Anyway, you get the idea. I find leftist extremism is often rooted in unrealistic idealism. And generally some overly emotional logic. But here's what I haven't heard from them: -Talks of civil war, and excitement in their voice over it. -Talk of being a "3 Percenter" or whatever and how they're "ready to go". -Pulling me aside in a drunken stupor and asking if they can count on me to be on the right side when the #### goes down (actual conversation a neighbor had with me). -Talk of violence against the other side. -Calling for America to go to one party, the GOP, and outlaw the other. -Lacing in n-words here and there to see how you react; to see if you're on "their side". -Immediately bringing up something controversial with politics when they first meet you so they can figure out where you stand.
But I've experienced plenty of that from the rightie nuts. Now I know someone's going to come in here and start hollering about BLM and the violent protests. Yeah, I know; I just haven't been in the middle of that. Those folks also seem more like criminal opportunists taking advantage of a situation rather than someone driven by political ideology.
I still believe America is mostly ordinary people who want to drink their beer and watch football. They may lean right or they may lean left, but they can get along with others like them and don't want a complete upheaval of society. There's stuff they feel conservative about and there's stuff they feel liberal about. They're normal, sane folks. That's most of America, IMO.
But ###### if we haven't given the voice to the crazies on both sides now. We've got one hollering at us about Green New Deals and pronouns and trigger warnings and letting Bob who now calls himself Jenny get on the swim block vs. other women. And then the other wants to kill those other guys and start a civil war.
Both like to label you as being the opposite side if you don't fully agree with everything they support, but I find the rightie extremists are worse. If you don't like Trump, you're automatically a leftist lib who supports Biden. They don't allow any wiggle room.
And when THAT group keeps hinting at civil war or a complete reset, and they've labeled you the enemy if you don't come completely to their side, then you can see why they're so dangerous.

I can't tell you how many times people who look normal come to me and conspiratorially drop the "n" word, waiting for me to give the secret KKK handshake. Happens virtually every day.
And, just this week, a business associate tried to recruit me into a secret militia led by Rand Paul and preparing to violently overthrow the gubmint. Crazy.
And our local grocer leaned conspiratorially over the counter at the register and said I looked like I might be eligible for the "Trump discount."
Crazy times.

Agree with most of what you say, but I think the left is just as dangerous if not more so. They are using the system and the courts to attempt to get their way.The media and universities are helpful to their cause as a whole.
Both extremes think anyone who disagrees with them is an idiot and some are even proud of their smugness and perceive themselves as intellectually superior to those that disagree
There are extremists on both sides. On the right, they are less organized and disciplined. On the left, they are less prone to violence in the near term, but are just as dedicated to reshaping this country in a profound way that most of us do not agree with.

I disagree strongly with the notion the courts are "weaponized". Every side uses the courts "to get their way". Judicial Watch launched something like 1200 lawsuits against the government last year alone. Trump's team brought 61 separate lawsuits against various government agencies over the election last year. (And lost 60 of them.)
The problem is that MAGA in general and Trump in particular are fundamentally lawless, and routinely break any law they feel like and then think sheer brazenness and chutzpah will save them from consequences. It works for awhile but it's also kicking the can down the road...and not only is Trump just about out of road, he's got literally dozens of cans waiting for him. The law is slow but it's also an implacable machine and it's going to chew Trump up and spit him out unless the Supreme Court bails him out. He's up on 91 freaking felony counts and his business empire is teetering from the thinnest of threads; if the DOJ had had time they easily could have charged him with three times that. The guy has legal exposure all over the place, and it's 100% his own stupid fault. His derpy followers just don't seem to understand what kind of thresher combine is coming for him.
In contrast the GOP has yet to even find so much as a bank statement that would incriminate Joe Biden. If they've got anything beyond empty pockets, they need to show it soon.
And if the Supreme Court bails Trump out and decides he's immune to prosecution, well, then so is Joe Biden. Does anyone think a Joe who by Supreme Court decree can do whatever he wants will just sit passively on his hands and meekly turn the country over to Trump the Self-Proclaimed Day One Dictator?

I'm not sure how I classify myself politically. I'm either moderate republican or Independent, its a toss up. But I do know I am throughly disgusted with what TRump did to the Republican party.

It's been your MO for some time.
So in all those things you listed, I didn't mention any of that. I talked about extremists who think the only solution to America's problems are putting bullets in the heads of the "other side". There's a stark difference between being conservative and being a nutjob Trumper insurrectionist.

But you'll never acknowledge it because of your animosity:
those people who don't want the unborn murdered through 9 months,
Agreed.
don't want guns confiscated,
Agreed.
don't want gubmint schools grooming kids with their gender bender ideology,
Agreed, and they're not.
don't want the border overrun by anyone,
Agreed.
don't want the debt and gubmint to grow infinitely,
Agreed, but you have historically supported politicians and policies that do this.
don't fall for the climate scam hustle,
Eh... it's real. Ask coastal city governments.
don't want DEI and CRT to become the official position of gubmint and business,
No problem with the government doing DEI; businesses should be free to act as they wish in this area. Not sure how a college level course (CRT) would somehow apply...
don't want gubmint censorship of free speech,
Agreed, but ya better support the media on that.
and don't want gubmint weaponized against anyone,
And agreed... so I'll assume you'll speak out against Trump if he gets back in office and does this?

Yeah, I always ask the gubermint first when I want an honest and informed answer. LOL!
Meanwhile, those complaining the most about climate change and the dangers of rising water are flying around on their private jets to coastal cities and buying mega million dollar homes right on the water.

ok but MOST people hold that position. You knew that though.
>don't want guns confiscated,
Again, most people aren't talking about gun confiscation, there is a lot of sensible middle ground
>don't want gubmint schools grooming kids with their gender bender ideology,
The left doesn't want grooming, that's a right-wing boogeyman
>don't want the debt and gubmint to grow infinitely,
Well shiz, better stop voting republican then.
>don't fall for the climate scam hustle,
Ah yes, denying science to say you're the sensible one.
>don't want DEI and CRT to become the official position of gubmint and business,
I'm sure you don't
>don't want gubmint censorship of free speech,
except where it suits you of course.
>and don't want gubmint weaponized against anyone
boy, wait until you hear about republicans. That's kind of their thing.

…. so I will slim it down and say that generally I am with you.
I found it interesting going to the NCAA title game in Tampa (JAN2019) being one of eight jammed into a vehicle. Most of us knew only one or two of the others. During “what do you do”s one stated that he sella armaments … and an awkward silence spread all over. The reason was clear - nobody wanted to offend any of the others … so a considerate group. Anyway, I piped up with essentially “I just got a new shotgun, so I won’t be looking to spend any more in your direction anytime soon”. That broke the silence and all was amiable after that.

I get what you're trying to say but it's left wing kooks who control most major institutions in this country, not closeted KKK "n word" whisperers. Look no further than the Ivy League presidents who are all super quick to jump all over a pronoun violation but have no opinion whatsoever about calls for genocide by thousands on their own campuses. You can try the whataboutism as much as you want but there isn't a right wing equivalent anywhere in this country to the thousands of college campuses full of left wing nut jobs who would do God knows what to Jews or the rest of us if they were able. There certainly are right wing nut jobs with abhorrent views, but let's not pretend they are in any equivalent to the left from a power perspective.

I extend that to literally everywhere. Unless it's someone you know really well and you're certain you can have a reasonable conversation, there's no point to bringing up political crap anywhere. Nothing positive or constructive will come of it.
Of all the places I've worked, I can only think of one colleague who ever talked about politics. Guess I'm lucky.

What I take from your post is that the extreme left gets worked up quicker about things that shouldn't bother them, like what vehicle you drive or if you own a gun (we have rights to own guns in this country). So, they're kinda generally weird about things.....they want to mind other people's business too much.
But the extreme right is much more violent in a political sense, and they're willing to essentially wipe out people that disagree with them. That's fascism right there.
To me, the extreme right is more dangerous than the extreme left. And I think the extreme right has more power in this country than the extreme left, via their attachment to Trump.
