Good question, I am not sure but it looks like this one:
https://reverb.com/item/77154710-1948-martin-00-17
It's got a really bright sound. Needs heavier strings I think.

Very kind gesture donating in honor os the USS Tamber. Quite a sub that endured her fair share of danger during WW II.
Submarine USS Tambor (SS-198) underway on the surface. Picture did not print.
Thank your family for your father’s service to our country.
Gad Bless you all. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I was able to find and follow all the tours and results of the Tambor.
Their biggest claim to fame was scaring Japan's remaining fleet of two destroyers retreating from the carnage at Midway. The Tambor surfaced causing the two destroyers to run into each other.

Was the Tambor the sub being chased by a Japanese destroyer that led Wade McCluskey’s squadron to the carriers early in the battle? The destroyer supposedly broke off to return to the fleet and McCluskey followed the ship’s wake back to the carriers for a bombing attack.

My father was given as a kid a Mandolin that was given the "Best Instrument" award in a 1890's World Fair in Chicago Award. Sticker is still inside the Instrument. This thing has to be worth money. I remember as a kid our dog hated the sound of that thing and I would strum it and chase the dog around the house for a good laugh. Who knows what damage I did but it sits in the attic today, hopefully coots or rats dont eat it. It was a pretty instument many yrs ago.

Pacific Beach ..... if your Martin is like the one shown, the guitar, including the top would be all Mahogany. You should be able to look inside the hole on top and you will see the model number and serial number stamped on the neck block. You can date it by the serial number. If it like the one you showed the photo of, it would be stamped 00-17 XXXXXXX (being the serial number). The 00 refers to the size of the body. a "0" would be a size smaller and a "000" would be a size larger than the "00". If it is stamped "D", then it is a dreadnaught, the largest, and most desirable of the Martin guitars. A pre WWII era D-45 is worth north of 300K. Hopefully yours has a spruce top which would make it a 00-18 (if Mahogany back and sides) or a 00-28 (if Rosewood back and sides) which are both more desirable than the "17" with Mahogany top. I would stick with light strings.

Thanks a lot. It's a 000-17! Oh well! But thanks for the information. I wanted to use heavier strings because it sounds tinny if that makes sense! Anyway, I won't now. Thanks a lot!

GLAD TO HELP ....... the 000-17 should have alittle more volume than a 00. Medium or medium-light strings should be fine. If the strings on it are old, it doesn't matter what gauge they are, as they will not sound good. Congrats on a fine heirloom!

A mandolin winning an award in 1890 is likely to be a bowl back type and not worth a lot. Some of the really nice ones are worth a little more, but still not what people are looking for today. Now if it were a Gibson,F-model, made in the early 1920's and the label signed by Lloyd Loar, you would be looking at about 150k or more.

I dont recall any signatures, but remember the woodwork was nice. I think it does have a rounded back but its been yrs since I put my hands on it. I remember the World Fair sticker inside, I remember there was a date on it and its well over 100yrs old. Dont remember manufacturer or anything else, but remember dad giving me hard time about running around playing with it for the dog because he didn't want it damaged.
Ive got his original Raggedy Andy Doll that is 100yrs old that someone told me was worth a pretty penny because all original buttons and whatever else that makes them valuable.

No lie, I had my grandfather's favorite coon dog's collar with Sam engraved on it. Sam was a Bluetick hound mix and grandpa was offered thousands for Sam when a few thousand would buy a new truck. Dont recall what happened to the collar.

I have my mom's 1972 martin D-18, it's a great guitar and LOUD when strummed with some gusto.
Your guitar, in decent condition, could easily be worth 8-10 grand.

The treasure is that it is his grandfathers guitar .... for sure. It sure has some value, but certainly not in the $8,000 - $10,000 range. Condition and originality is also very important for value and playability. It is not uncommon for a guitar that age that has been strung up for that long to need a neck re-set. I have a 1946 and 1954 00-18 that are both with a luthier right now getting their necks re-set.

As I'm not a musician, I had to look that one up. I think my son (who plays the guitar) would absolutely love having one. That's one heck of a nice inheritance.
