Kirby and the sideline incident with MSU player. A question.

I've already commented on it in another thread. There are a few threads on this board. Not trying to rehash it here. But, here is my question:
Whose responsibility is it to investigate and determine what, if any, disciplinary action should be taken? 1. UGA 2. SEC 3. Both 4. Neither
My answer is 2. Since this involved people from 2 different teams, the SEC has the responsibility to detrmine what, if any, action should be taken.
Note: It may not be his "responsibility" technically, but it certainly seems to me it should be the personal obligation of the AD to investigate it and determine what, if any, action should be taken.
When I coached at a JUCO many moons ago, we had every player on the team sign a list of rules. The last rule was "I will not do anything to embarrass myself, my team or my school." When a head coach was hired, the president, when offering him the job included, "Don't do anything to embarrass the school."
Heck, I was a deacon at a fairly large Southern Baptist church. The pastor closed almost every meeting with, "Men, don't do anything stupid."
I don't expect UGA to take any action against Kirby, and certainly not publicly. I don't think what he did rises to the level of Woody Hayes and he should be fired. But, I do think the president should ask the AD, "What did Kirby tell you when you talked to him about the incident? He did assure you it would never happen again, didn't he?"

Kirby had no idea who he bumped into when it happened. He was laser focused on whoever he was trying to get after. I think this has been blown way out of proportion, and isn’t even in the same stratosphere as what Woody Hayes did.
Humble opinion provided.

"Bumped Into" gimme a break. Opinions like yours are what's gone wrong with this country. A grown man who's mission is the advancement of young men, physically and unprovoked full-force shoved a player who was returning to the field of play.
I hope you just haven't watched the video and are ignorant, not sick in the head. My Humble Opinion

I agree, but I don't think the SEC will touch Kirby. They may wag a finger his way and say "Now Kriby, don't be pushing or hitting players on the other team." lol

If the SEC would fine Kirby $25,000 it would reflect well on them and college football. They would get WAY more than $25,000 worth of positive press out of it and Kirby wouldn't feel a bit of pain.

UGA is absolutely responsible for policing their employees.
The SEC is responsible for policing the teams within that conference and making sure the rules are generally followed (to the benefit of the conference).
The worst thing that will happen is uga AD will tell KS “don’t do that again” and then tell the SEC they took care of it.

I don't care what UGA tells the SEC. This involved people from 2 schools. Therefore it is not an "internal" issue. UGA can do their own internal investigation, but that does no absolve the SEC from doing their own investigation. and analysis.

Well, if the rest of the world is as upset about this as TNETers, Kirby will issue a public apology. Whether or not he says anything publicly about it, he will likely apologize to Jeff Lebby. Afterwards, this will live on TNET and only until Finebaum says something about Dabo. At which time Finebaum will be the new thing to be enraged over.

So the only problem is that he was going after his guy? In any other business dude is fired no questions asked. Having said that I think Kirby was focused on someone else but does that really excuse it? Not up to me and will leave it up to those that make these decisions.

He needs to apologize to the player NOT his coach! He should have pushed him back. I wonder if it would have been a non-issue if that happened? 🙄 probably not!

I've tried to be fair and open minded. Let's assume it was an accident by Kirby. What if it was a member of the chain crew or, heaven forbid, another official who was directing the MSU player back to the field. Would the SEC not be interested in the fact that Kirby shoved an official, even accidentally?
All I'm saying is the SEC should be the one making the statement, "It was accidental and no action is required."

If it was an accident then he still lost his cool and acted in a highly unprofessional manner in public while representing his university and state on national tv.
Yell all you want. Scream til you’re blue in the face and throw your visor on the ground. Just keep your hands to yourself, just like you were taught in kindergarten. Not too much to ask, surely.

What would have been the consequences if Smart had pushed a Ref or member of the chain gang (and I don't mean half the UGA players) out of the way to try to get somewhere? The whole lack of accountability by Smart, the AD and UGA Admin is a $h!+ show.

I agree that I don’t think anything was intentional. But even if it was accidental, aren’t there rules against making contact with opposing players on the sideline? If a GA player had done this I would have fully expected a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Didn’t we think there should have been a penalty when the NC State ASSistant hit DW4 on the sideline? And I still say if it was unintentional and/or Kirby didn’t know who he bumped and shoved, wouldn’t that just show that he is completely out of control?

Bret,
Here is something that I do not understand and it happens in a number of instances beyond football as well.
Why not just step up at the end of the game and say, " I am sorry. I got a little worked up over __________________ and I over reacted. I want to particularly apologize to __________________ and __________________ and _______________________. I will be more attentive in the future to act in a way that reflects positively on my organization, my family and myself. Thank-you all for calling me out on my poor behavior.
I think that would get anyone a ton of respect across the board - and kill any story about it in its tracks.

That is apparently what happened on Sunday.

Kirby issued a statement today saying he called Jeff Lebby, HC, and the player and apologized to both of them. He attributed it to "chaos on the sideline."
Apparently MSU accepted the apology and it is officially a non-incident.

I posted yesterday that I expected Kirby would issue a public apology (which I don't think he did) and call Jeff Lebby (which he did). Apparently he also spoke to the concerned MSU player. Everyone can now sleep well.

As long as Georgia continues to win you Georgia fans care less what else happens. If it had been reversed & Miss St’s coach pushed Georgia’s quarterback no matter the intent you Georgia fans would be losing your mind about it. You know it’s true. Just win baby & Kirby can do no wrong.

WOW! I could have sworn this was a Clemson fan page- but we seem to spend an awful lot of time talking about the dawgs. It’s kind of weird how many Tiger fans want to spend their free time bashing Georgia.
