was a 3-star that we took late in the recruiting process last year (previous Wake Forest commit). He turned out to be one of the absolute the best players on our team. I watched film on our LB recruit as well as our Ol recruit. These guys are gonna be good for Clemson. I trust our coaches to evaluate and develop.

Few things in life are certain. One of them is that you can’t please everyone! Especially the groves of trolls on TNET!

Great pickups. Very fortunate they worked out. I wouldn’t bank on that being the norm. It’s more the exception. Either way, both are great players. Especially Barnes.

Antonio Williams was a similar late take in '22. When you dole out as few a number of offers as we do, our fallback options show a selectivity still that exceeds nearly every other program out there. These late pick-ups actually have been the norm with a litany of success stories to go with.

Not every young man develops and grows at the same pace and on the same timeline. There can be a full age year difference between kids in the same class. Dabo and Company have done an excellent job over the years of identifying and recruiting kids that haven't quite blossomed along the expected timeline and instead show their talents later in their HS careers. You don't get everyone right, but their track record overall is pretty impressive.

There's a couple of these late pick ups that work out every year.

It's the coaches recruiting, actually doing leg work in case they need to extend a late offer, because they issued about 90 offers INSTEAD of 250- 300 of them. Whine ON !!!

True, but I think this is a hangover from the year that Bates took the "recruiting coordinator" role from Streeter. Bates was an excellent coach, but that recruiting year under him set us back. There are going to be some fallback recruits that end up being great. One of our greatest running backs ever, Etienne, was one of them. However, there is a reason that we were not targeting them to begin with and those reasons often show up in their play.

Fallbacks are basically like injury replacements. You don't want to be forced into them, but you want to be as prepared as you can when they are necessary.

It would be different if Dabo and staff haven't done it over and over again but they have consistently showed they know what they are doing. Does it always pan out, no, but neither have 5 stars always pan out. It's funny though most of the fans that whine and cry about everything Dabo does are the first to defend Clemson when it comes to arguing with opposing fans yet come to Clemson boards and act like the opposing fans they go to othe sites to fight with. Go figure.

recruiting and team-building than anybody on this board. I understand that this board exists so that us fans can discuss Clemson football and voice our non-expert opinions, including critical ones. That's all well and good. Obviously, Dabo and staff aren't perfect, and they don't get it right every time; NO coach does, NO coach ever will. Having said that, it's hillarious when people on here really believe and act as if Dabo and our coaches are idiots, or don't know what they are doing.

It seems like they are two opposing extreme hot takes around the current state of recruiting..

One extreme is that every recruit must be a blue chip and if a signee is three stars or lower they are a charity case, a coach’s son, or some kind of other “friends and family plan”

The other extreme states that star ratings are completely irrelevant (maybe even detrimental) are that 4 and 5 stars are actually somehow all bad cultural fits nowadays anyway. They frequently cite Hunter Renfro, and I guess they believe that we will a natty with a team full of “ 5 heart” guys because they are not tainted with the unholy NIL….

Of course both of these takes miss the reality . Ratings do matter, particularly aggregate five star ratings across a recruiting class but that doesn’t mean that every player must be highly rated. Player development is still very important and coaches should always be open to an unsung player having a spot of the team if they are the right fit.

Which long story short, I think Dabo does as good a job as any in both getting highly rated players and also keeping an eye on cultural fit and potential unsung contributors!

Get out of here with your logical argument that it’s not a one size fits all. Your common sense approach does no good for internet boards where people like to complain!! But he’s right!
