actual University attended, year of graduation, and major? No names, for obvious reasons, but it would be cool to know the "demongraphic" if you will, of us Tnetters. If you didn't go to college, just put "None", it'll confuse Frank Gifford. No demerits for not attending Clemson, I promise! Fans are fans, for a whole lot of different reasons. I will start:

Oct 21, 2022, 1:08 PM

Attended Clemson College in 1963-1964 and graduated from Clemson University as a Chemistry major in August of 1964. Never walked across the stage to get a diploma as I was acting Company Commander in a parade at Fort Gordon that day. When I got back from Vietnam in the spring of 1967 I went by the Registrars Office (it was still in Tillman Hall then) and picked up my diploma. The woman I spoke to made sure to tell everyone that I was there and picking it up finally.

Last class to have a ring that said Clemson A&M College.

Started at Clemson 1969 with a major of Geology. My parents said my actual major was beer drinking and minored in Canteen Bridge. Ran out of money in fall of 1974. After the CNSYD closed in 1996, went back to Clemson in spring of 1997 and graduated Spring of 1998 with a degree in Earth Science Teaching.
One of my brothers graduated in fall 1978 in Electrical Engineering and my daughter graduated in 2010 in Chemical Engineering. Other two brothers retired from military. Most of my adult life has been spent working for the Navy Nuclear Program.

was in high school, I scored VERY well on the SAT. I started getting letters from colleges all over, including one from....wait for it.....MIT! I laughed and threw it in the trash. Two reasons for that. One, my parents were willing to pay for all of us to go to college, but only willing to pay IN-STATE tuition. Two, and most importantly, I knew that with my study habits, I would last about five seconds at MIT!

Yep Tiger1983 in the basement of the P&AS building. More air conditioning capacity in that basement than on all the rest of campus combined just to cool all those tubes in that IBM mainframe. We were beginning to get some terminals by the end of my time, and I figured cards were obsolete by the end of yours.

My first job, I had to go backwards from fortran to assembler language since the computer wasn't powerful enough to handle fortran fast enough to also collect 64 channels of data acquisition, convert, calculate, and display results in anywhere near real time.

BTW, I was required to have a slide rule my freshman year. Didn't get my first calculator until sophomore year, a TI10 whose claim to fame in addition to +-x/ was a square root function. Things evolved quickly however and I got a HP35 slide rule calculator my junior year, and an HP45 scientific my senior year. My first job came with an HP67 programmable, followed not long after by an HP41CV alphanumeric with a card reader and plug in printer. Eventually evolved to the HP48GX graphing calculator sometime in the mid 90's, the last of the great HPs, which I still own and use today.

My we've come a long way, and let's not even try to track all the evolution of computers, personal computers, laptops, tablets, and phones in our lifetime. Good memories of the excitement of every new evolution.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Keuffel and Esser Log Log Duplex Decitrig. I remember that

Oct 23, 2022, 6:58 PM

thing cost $125, and then was rendered useless the very next year with the Profs letting calculators be used instead. Mine got fried in a 1977 house fire, along with diploma and pretty much everything else.

I saw that same slide rule in an ANTIQUE SHOP a couple years ago, for $25. I bought it just for a coffee table conversation item, and a "What the Heyall, it's part of my college history" nostalgia moment. I don't even remember how to punch the keys on the thing. They must be real tiny, I can't even see them anymore.

Clemson University
Mechanical Engineering
Class of 1976 (that is on my ring).
However, I enjoyed it so much that I stuck around until December 1978 (that is on my diploma).

I have your typical roller coaster GPA with a final overall of 2.0001
I partied every spring semester, rarely went to class, and barely passed anything.

Then, I would receive a letter of probation with threat of expulsion, and requirements to remain enrolled.
I worked my butt off every summer to make enough money to return.

Every fall I had to study my ### off, and pull a 3.5-4.0 to stay enrolled.
This included passing 2 calculus courses at the same time, one that I made a D in the spring semester, plus the normal fall one so I could stay current with prerequisites for ME courses. That was fun, NOT, but I was a slow learner, and did it more than once. ?

Rinse, repeat. Oh, I had good intentions to do better every spring, but then the weather would warm up, the ladies would start sunbathing on the lawn of the Calhoun Mansion outside my D3 window, the hormones would take over, the party was on, and classes were over. ?

Those 6 rebellious, partying, womanizing, spring semesters were the most fun I ever had in my entire life and that included 5 years in Aspen that weren't bad. I even remember some of it.

The 7 fall semesters were the most important for my life, earning the ME degree that led to a rewarding engineering career. One that allowed me to travel all over the world, and spend time on projects in every industrialized country in the world, and most of the 3rd world shyattholes also. I thank God for giving me the perseverance to keep going back and never give up. I guess I should thank him for the ladies also, but they have been and continue to be the bain of my existence for my entire life. Oh well.

After all that I've learned, and the wisdom that I've gained, what would I change? Not a thing. Just wish I had more years left to see my Tigers play and enjoy my life. Go Tigers. ??

A couple of quick stories related to some posts in this thread....

Oct 24, 2022, 11:50 AM

I was a Math major with a minor in Computer Science... that's all you could get in the 70s, there were no computer/software specific majors. I took Assembly, Fortran, Cobol, etc classes. In the Martin Hall basement late at night, trying to get programs to compile. Typed on punch cards and run through the card-reader. Each card was a different line of code, as I recall. I remember for big programs I had my cards in empty cigar boxes, they fit perfectly. Most folks had big rubber bands around them. Also remember dropping a cigar box on the way to Martin one morning... the cards spilled out everywhere. I was hosed, every card had to be in perfect order... I spent many hours redoing that damm program.

My roommate was majoring in Civil Engineering, and struggling with a couple of classes. I could help him with Calculus, but there was this one class he kept dropping and trying again next semester. I think it was Statics and Dynamics, with some professor who was a legendary hardazz. Anyway, he was about to drop out of school when an Architecture major on our hall said - Man, we have a Building Science major that's not under Engineering, and you can avoid a couple of those killer classes. So that's what he did. And was very successful... ended up as VP of a big commercial construction company and retired around age 50. Has a huge house on the ocean, etc. I often think about that conversation in our dorm room late that night when he decided to change majors... probably playing backgammon and doing bong hits. But it changed his life.
