Hording too. Companies maximizing profits and jacking up prices while people stockpiled goods. Then there was the logistics. High demand with low supply, coupled with price gauging even when there was supply. The prices never came back down. Kind of like what will happen with the tariffs.

Why don't you just TELL us the cause of the inflation spike in 2022?

It was global and largely related to labor shortage...

and, after 3+ years, I've yet to hear a good explanation of what factors really led to the global labor issue.
What I do know is it's not a simple explanation due to the global nature of the inflation.

But the question remains...where did all the workers go?...

a bit of can be explained by the retirement/boomer/early retirement argument...but not much of it.
Labor force participation stats show we lost a lot of folks, especially "prime age" men 25-54. Labor fore participation rate had been on a slow steady decline for many decades, but prime age men was starting to trend up slightly for the decade preceding COVID. But this many years out and we are still shy of getting back to pre-covid levels for prime age men. And that's a consistent patterns around the world. And, like I said above, I've never really been able to find anyone with a good explanation of that. The impact on manufacturing, specifically, is huge...hence inflation pressure of goods.

Long covid is taking a toll, and it's something that slowly compounds like interest, over time. Most people with milder long covid symptoms....are working, just not as well as they did.
Keep in mind, In 2003 they discovered many people who got the original SARS infection also developed "long SARS". https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7112501/

I can dig deep in the weeds and show studies showing how ATP production in mitochondria are negatively impacted by covid. The fatigue that lingers, that's likely caused by damaged mitochondria, that are unable to both create ATP (energy) and also inhibits interferon production, weaking the immune system. (Making other infections more severe, and rare infections more common). Unexplained platelet damage is also another hallmark. My mother and I both have that, and doctors are clueless why we have that issue. They tested my mom for bone/blood cancer, was negative.

Labor shortages don't really explain the specific spike of 2022.

Labor shortages were a major driver of inflation early in the pandemic, but the actual rise and fall of inflation in 2022 tracks almost identically with the price of crude oil after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

It seems reasonable that all of those played a role.

Personally, I don't have any idea which of those were the biggest drivers, and I think determining that depends on who you ask.

Russia invaded Ukraine on 2/24/22. Crude oil prices, which began the year
2

at $76 per barrel skyrocketed to a price of $139.16 on March 6th, 2022. By December of 2022 oil prices had returned to their level at the beginning of the year with a price of $75 per barrel.
As a result, inflation spiked to an annual rate of 9.1% in June of 2022, but fell over the remainder of the year to a level slightly lower than where it began the year as the price of crude oil fell back to the levels at the beginning of the year.
Great question! Thanks for posting it!
