J. Ross unfortunately lost millions due to Clemson QB play on 2021
May 1, 2022, 7:34 PM

|
This is going to hurt our WR recruiting, our OL recruiting and our RB recruiting with strong receiving skills. J Ross was a second round player all day if he had a successful 2021. But if you go back and watch the evolution of the first 5-7 games in 2021, players seemed to try harder when T. Phomm came into play. But you could also see that Ross' efforts went down from blocking to routes. Basically I feel like he knew he was gone and wanted to save his body. I can't blame him at all but I think he hurt himself. Then add being limited at the combine didn't help either.

Has nothing to do w it. It’s his congenital injury. Do some research.
Only 5 NFL teams medically tried to clear him.

be tough to recruit against UGA when they will throw the 15 vs 2 in our recruits face at every turn. Listen, the QB play did Ross no favors but at the end of the day he was unfortunately never the same player he was his Freshman year due to the injuries. So it’s time we stop blaming the QB, who albeit was completely inept, and start realizing he just wasn’t the same awesome player!

Plus, he was out of position in the slot. Nothing like asking a guy with a potentially paralyzing condition to go across the middle.

That is the other thing I meant to mention. Him playing slot in theory probably sounded good to Ross to broaden his opportunities in the NFL but at the end of the day it was a horrible decision by our staff. That change definitely didn't help him.
Ross was or is one of my favorite wr's, some of his acrobatic catches were awesome. Not sure where the idea that of slot became popular among the staff but he should have played his natural position if he was going to move onto the NFL. I'm sure 95% of his followers felt like he was moving on so he didn't risk another big injury.
I really only started the thread because I feel bad for him. I hope he has huge gains in the NFL and get a Mike Williams or Nuk type contract.

I hope that is the last time they try our tallest WR in the slot. Never believed in the move when it was first discussed publically moving Overton to the slot. Square peg, round hole.

ICATiger unfortunately lost his mind due to Justin Ross’ play ON 2021.
Glad he’s not associated with the Clemson football program.

Amazing how some jump at any chance to criticize DJ. Ross had a phenomenal freshman year but that ended up being the best year he had. Who knows when during his sophomore year the neck issue started affecting him. And he certainly wasn’t the same guy this year. Blaming DJ is just seizing an opportunity to further an agenda. I think I remember Dabo saying Ross ran the wrong route on the pick six in the GA game this year. I don’t like to hear any individual blamed for a team loss. This years team had enough issues to spread the blame all around.

So I am defending Ross, hoping he had a better outcome in the draft.
One of our best WR's that shined in his freshman year especially during the highest viewed game of the year, now he doesn't get drafted. I only wanted better for Ross.
How will this hurt recruiting? Players see a star that helped win a Natty but doesn't get drafted from Clemson. Players are not dumb, they know he had a serious injury but then we put him in the slot after he shined on the boundary. Then add in poor OL and QB play, recruits will take that into consideration because every school recruiting him will point out those very same issues. That will hurt recruiting.
Wish Ross came back this year but it was probably the best for him to not chance another injury or he would have needed injury insurance. I am very shocked he didnt at least get a 6-7 round offer as I truly expected a 4th.

IF, Ross had played better, IF other receivers had played better, IF the OL had played better, IF DJ had played better. IF Ross hadn't missed a season, IF there hadn't been so many injuries. But with all these things Ross shouldn't have elected to turn pro this year. Bad decision equal potential loss of money!

I disagree.

The biggest concern with him is the congenital neck injury that almost cost him his career.
He wasn’t the same player when he returned, and that had nothing to do with his quarterback. He didn’t seem to be the same player after he returned. He dropped a lot of balls and did not get the separation or yards after the catch he did previously.
Maybe his foot injury impacted his performance last year, but again, that gets back to injury concerns.
If you want to blame someone at Clemson, blame the coaches who moved him to the slot. That was a horrible decision.
He didn’t wow anybody in pre-draft workouts. A good 40 time or good agility on drills would’ve more than overcome a bad QB last year, but he didn’t impress.
The concerns are obviously significant since teams aren’t jumping at the chance to sign him as an undrafted free agent.
The sad thing is that he got some very bad advice about going pro. A productive year in 2022 at Clemson would’ve made a big difference.

J.Ross' unfortunate tendency to be injured very well may not have resolved itself with another season with us.
As much as I'd loved to have #8 on our WR room this year, I think he made the right call.
If he can make a NFL practice squad (not get too banged up, but get healthy and keep his football skills sharp), then I think that he'll get some snaps in real playing time before end of 2022 season.
J.Ross' performance with a NFL team ... assuming that he can get & stay healthy on a practice squad ... will do more for him than anything else.
His neck (by itself) won't ruin his NFL career. But the neck + foot injuries are a bad combo for a guy who isn't blazing fast and doesn't have the short-route super-quicks.
He's got to get healthy while a NFL club is watching him every day all day in practice.
Then he'll have a shot to play a few years in NFL.

So I don't know the extent of the injury but...

Many people referred to it as a similar injury to Mike W. If that is true, while it is very scary, he was given the greenlight to play. If he can play then there are only couple issues I see from a draft position. Dabo and Staff proclaimed they protect players at all costs, and I tend to agree. But we all know Dabo paints a better picture then may be true on injuries, has happened often over the years. But if Ross injury was same as or nearly same as M Williams, then he didn't play at same level following the surgery. That said, if I believe Dabo, then the QB play and the OL play caused a fall in production.
So where am I missing the point that ppl want to TD me? I am praising Ross saying he missed out on millions. So where is the fault. I have said that he lost millions due to OL and QB play. I have said this star had lost millions due to playing wrong positions which the staff totally missed that! Anyone that says Ross is a slot player is crazy.
Ross lost millions because the QB, the OL and placing Ross in the wrong spot. Obviously his health was an issue but we didn't put him in his best position. You look at the evolution of the season and you could see the decline in effort at some levels.
I wanted Ross to be a multi-millionaire, how am I being negative towards the program when everything I have said is true??

Sorry dude, but you lost all credibility when suggesting that TPhomm was even part of the answer.
Love the team player, sounded like the person was a fine person ... but TPhomm just couldn't throw.
Every toss was a prayer.
Sorry, but that's what the coaches saw as well. Otherwise, TPhomm would have played when DJU had his f'd up finger and his f'd up knee.
Oh yeah, on the WR recruiting we're doing fine. Adam Randall (thank goodness his ACL tear was clean and easy to repair) is going to be a Demaryius Thomas type of receiver.
One more ... Nathaniel Joseph (current commit) is a speedster stud.
Why are these guys wanting to play at Clemson? Stud QBs / stud WR reputation / and stud OL (yes, I said stud OL).
Also our fabulous defense will give the O many opportunities to show out.

I'm not going yo dig for it, but there were many, many Tnetters that said the same thing when TP came into the game. I think it was the NCSt game where DJ got pulled and TP moved the ball right down the field snd scored. Unfortunately TP got his shoulder hurt on that drive and could not return. Everyone on Tnet said that the offensive players looked more energized and played harder. The WR's were pointed out as blocking harder.
The overall assumption was players were playing harder for which I felt was a true assumption.
That was same game where DJ was asked if he learned anything from being benched and he flat out said no! I would think any player could learn something from being benched for a series or 2.

Sorry dude, the evidence speaks for itself.
11 Tigers hit the FB portal during / after 2021 season.
10 of them found a new team.
Guess who didn't? TPhomm.
It's not just the Clemson coaches who learned that TPhomm just can't throw the ball.

Yeah , he hurt our offense and yes maybe recruiting, he gave very lil effort in breaking off his routes not winning the 50/50 balls that’s what Clemson receivers are fighters but saw no fight from Ross playing time, these kids that think the final year they can go easy

He was medically cleared to play football, not a certain position. If the medical staff cleared him, they believed it was safe for him to play the slot or run down the field on the kick-off team or anything else.
I also don’t believe he wouldn’t give 100% on the field when playing no matter the position or other players. He gave his best for Clemson and is appreciated. The truth is players are sometimes injured and their play afterwards can be affected.

Ross gave Clemson and all of college football one great year when he was a freshman. After a spectacular start he was mediocre due to his physical issues. I love Ross and will recall his 2018 magical performances until the day I die. I wish him only the best.

He certainly wasn't back to pre-surgery/injury form and didn't do much to enhance his draft status.

His effort “seems” to go down during the year. However, it was more likely that his foot injury was making it seem that way. He insisted on gutting it out until he just couldn’t anymore…
I haven’t seen this much bs in a single post in a while. Congrats.

I see what you’re trying to sell here, but from the rest of the responses, ugh! Let’s start with Justin, freshman year was phenomenal! Did he have a better QB for two years, no one will argue that, of course he did. But, I could tell something was wrong in his Sophomore year. I couldn’t pin point it during the season, but in the playoffs vs Ohio State is where something was wrong. He didn’t seem himself, he was catching passes, but hit after hit he was looking like Cam Newton. Then the LSU game did him in. Once we all got made aware of a condition he was dealing with for a while, if you stop to think about it, Cooper Manning (Payton/Eli brother) comes to mind. He had the same issue that ended his chances of ever playing football.
For Justin, it was just a matter of time, yes the surgery was a success, but sitting out a year, not being able to fully do the physical intensive workouts and training he was accustomed to doing really set him back more. Look he’s human, he’s had to realize he’s not invincible, this type of condition nobody is .
To blame this past season on bad QB play, well that’s a reach. Justin just wasn’t the same, and honestly yes he was out of his comfort zone at the slot position, but still he wasn’t strong enough physically yet to comeback full force. Should he have come back this year, who says he can’t! It’s a new era of College Football, NIL, heck he can come on back, get physically right, gain some confidence once again at his normal position and show last year was just a feeling through the motions type of year.
To blame DJ is a reach, I blame DJ for a lot of things but Justin Ross isn’t one of them. Justin did what he had to do, unfortunately he just wasn’t ready, but if he comes on back, gets physically right, works hard, we might just see the Justin Ross we all came to know on the field.

This is pure ignorance.
Ross's issues are on him. He has significant medical issues on his resume and had an underwhelming year, especially when compared to his freshman year.
DJ did not affect his combine/pro day scores or individual team scouting rankings, he ran 4.63 forty, only two players in the top 35 receivers were that slow, and a slow 1.76 10 yard dash.
DJ did not run routes for him. How many times dod you see him separate this year?
DJ did not "lose" 50-50 balls.
DJ did not give up on routes or run lazy routes, which Ross was guilty of on quite a few occasions.
Kansas City will have a chance to figure him out and he will have a chance to prove he belongs.
Attached is the excerpt from Bleacher Reports "the Beast" evaluation summary of Ross.
