I want a coaching change not because of anything that does or doesn't happen on the field at this point. I simply want a coaching change because I no longer care for Dabo as Clemson's head coach. I don't even care if the next coach sucks as well at least we will still be where we are right now, but there would be potential to not suck. I feel that Dabo no longer represents Clemson very well. Clemson needs a total program reset, #### even the basketball team uses the portal, but somehow "culture" is still there. The longer the University drags their feet, the more Clemson will have to spend and wait for the program to rebound. I'm actually more fond of the Bowden years of 2000-2007 than I am of the years 2020-2025 by about 5x. In fact, if you AVERAGE the years 2014-2019 with the years 2020-2025, the NET happiness probably averages to the Bowden years. Pumpers will continue to pump until the year 2050, most are delusional.

Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion, hence opinion board. I know you're not a troll, but I've got to believe in my heart that you just mis titled your subject header.

It's one thing to disagree with his approach, or want to see him leave, yet quite another to say you don't like him as a person.

We've all discussed Dabo's "flaws" such as his stubborness, hubris, the awe shucks stuff, the attacking the fans, etc. If someone was that way in your own personal life, would you say you like them or not? Dabo of old probably doesn't like the Dabo of now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Your post sounds harsh but I see what you mean . . . but let me counter with

this.

(A) I agree the stubbornness, gaslighting the fans, and reflexive bristling at even reasonable criticism is huge turnoff and a real problem. You're right, none of us would waive that off very easily if someone in our life did it;

(B) Negative tendencies sometimes tend to accompany positive ones - some very productive people might veer towards being a workaholic, successful people can be prideful and arrogant, very particular people might be tempted towards perfectionism and nitpickiness, sensitive souls might tend towards discouragement or sadness ... You get the point.

I think Dabo has admirably cultivated a practically indominable spirit of optimism in his life. He endured a lot of really rough stuff especially when it was younger, with his family dynamic, and he and his mother made it through that slog. That takes quite a determined spirit. Some people collapse under all that, and some find a way not to. I suppose if you go through stuff that rough, you might just grasp at whatever internal resources and tendencies you have to go through it. From the outside looking in, it appears to me that his doggedly optimistic spirit is both a partial cause and consequence of his experiences . . . in other words, it's largely served him well to help him get through all that hard stuff (as well as his professional success), and so he's understandably inclined to retain that posture.

I don't think that justifies all of what you're talking about- I think there ought to be some balance there - but it at least makes it more understandable, and keeps him from being unlikeable in my eyes, even if I notice some of the same shortcomings.

No one is perfect. We all make mistakes, including Dabo.

With that said, I do agree that Dabo has represented Clemson well overall. He’s a good man who is also the best coach we’ve ever had.

So first you say it is personal, that you just don’t like who he is. But then you list a bunch of things that are program and institution related, but not personal to Dabo.

Which is it?

People don't seem to realize that we are paying him 60 million whether he stays or goes. If he stays we continue to decline that may takes decades to recover from. If we rip the band aid off, we have a chance to see improvement in 2-3 seasons, which one sounds better to you?

It's not hard to decline when you were at the top.
This team won the conference and made the playoffs last year. Yes they got some help but they still did it. Even the last 5 years have been good years compared to other teams.
This year has been a disappointment, it happens. Dabo got Clemson to the top and will do it again if given the chance.

I have ZERO problem with the decline. Let me say that AGAIN for those in the back. I don't even care that we have declined in 5 years. What I care about is being lied to repeatedly by a man making $11 million a year all the while playing his awe shucks routine while he is setting up all his buddies with generation wealth WHILE WE DECLINE. Do you see the difference? If it was just a humble 5 year slump with a humble coach who didn't attack fans and go home to his personal basketball court I would be more ok with it, but that's not what has happened now is it? how many times has Dabo "blamed fans" for their own poor coaching? I've lost track. But somehow people keep on pumping this man, like it's still 2014 Dabo when we know that Dabo is long in the past. This Dabo is not the old Dabo.

Maybe you were not born when Dabo was hired, Maybe you were still a toddler or maybe you just don't understand how things work. Clemson did not just decide one day out of nowhere to make Dabo one of the highest paid coaches and give him a huge buyout because He smiled and said nice things. Actually when he was hired he was the lowest paid head coach on The ACC and ask His assistant coaches if Dabo is legit or a liar! He got paid because He won, that's how it works you get paid for what you produce and Dabo has produced in spades!
Most of the success or extra money that Basketball and baseball and soccer have came directly from DABO! i am sorry you feel like a loser because Clemson is having a down year but you sound like a spoiled whiny little brat!
Dabo can stay as long as He likes but I promise you no one will do better for Clemson that Dabo!

23 posts and you can forecast the future? I've been going to the Valley since 1965. Have seen all the ups and downs. We have not hit bottom yet. It's coming next year or in two years. I have been down this road many times. Empty seats and a drop off in donations will bringe change. Dabo built it, and then he destroyed it. We will have a losing record next year. Just look at who is leaving, what we have coming back, and the train wreck in recruiting for the second year in a row. It's over. He will empty the stadium and a change will be made. One or two years is the only question.

It is? What's Clemson Men's Basketball culture? Does it have an identity at all? Seriously, I didn't know that. I'm assuming you mean more than putting "Grit" on a t-shirt? I really don't know...what's Clemson's Men's Basketball culture besides putting together whatever will get us as many wins as we can every season in a turned-strikingly-bad conference and losing early in whatever tournament we can make, only to rebuild again the next season?

"In fact, if you AVERAGE the years 2014-2019 with the years 2020-2025, the NET happiness probably averages to the Bowden years. Pumpers will continue to pump until the year 2050, most are delusional."

Yes, Dabo is the victim of his own success. When Bowden was here, most Clemson fans had had a multi-decade diet of Subway sandwiches. His Jersey Mike subs were a revelation. Fast forward to today, and most Clemson fans enjoyed feasting on Filet Mignon from Halls, and from 2020-2025 we've had to settle for Firebirds.

What's "Firebirds" to Clemson fans from 2020-2025?

* Top Ten in Winning Percentage in the country.
https://betiq.teamrankings.com/college-football/betting-trends/win-loss-records/?season=since-2020

* Three Conference Titles in those five years (I'll give you six years since it obviously isn't happening this year). We are disgusted that we only win the conference title 50% of the time.

* Two playoff appearances.
Keep in mind that, in the same period, we had:
Bama, Ohio State, Michigan and UGA each with three appearances
Notre Dame and Texas with two appearances along with Clemson
The remainder of college football had either one appearance (10 programs) or none

Bleh. Like eating shoe leather.
