If Wake goes undefeated do they get in?

Granted, they play us, but the rest of their schedule is very doable. If that happened and a 1 loss big ten, 12, or sec team played in their stead, a lawsuit could be in order.

An undefeated ACC champion is a lock for the playoffs. Doesn't matter if its Duke or WF.

Depends on the game they play vs us and how it went down.. Far from a lock. Everyone knows they would be a BYE for whoever got them in the playoff.

I wouldnt call it a lock at all. I dont think they are a lock even if they beat us. Depends how the game goes down and what other teams do. They arent beating us, so it wont matter. Let's say they did for a novelty, I doubt they would even be ranked top 7. I think it would be like Central Florida. Nobody will take them seriously.

Just about any 11-1 team almost always cracks the top 25. There have been teams in there with 3 and 4 losses.

You mean #19 Wake won't stay in the AP top 25?
Look at the history of the polls and tell us how many 11 win teams are in the top 10.

They'd easily be in the top 25, and probably the top 15 with an 11-1 record. They're #19 at the moment btw. If they went 11-1 then either that 1 loss would be on the road against a Clemson team ranked somewhere in the top 5, OR they would have beaten Clemson and lost to someone else along the way.
No way would a team currently ranked 19th end up outside the top 25 with an 11-1 record and their only loss being on the road against a top 5 team, or being 11-1 including a win on the road over a top 5 team.

I actually think they'd need a lot of help. They didn't do themselves any favors with their OOC schedule. They did get an OOC game with UNC, but the rest of the OOC schedule is Utah State, Rice, and Elon.

Not sure, but to be #1, it is apparent that an ACC team must win MORE THAN 20 GAMES IN A ROW.

First, they would need A LOT of help to move-up to the top four in the CFP poll.
Second, their OOC schedule will be a real liability for them.
Third, and most importantly, Wake is not going to go undefeated.

I have always thought the should use the conference championship games as a "first round" in play-offs. Those 5 make it and then 3 at large bits.
This would force those not in a competitive conference to get into one.

Assuming they were to beat Clemson(puh-lease) and then beat a ranked UVA they probably get in! As someone else said: "I could see them getting the "okie-doke" if LSU or Bama only have one loss. Oklahoma is undefeated as well as Ohio St. You would also have to consider the SEC-least champion Georgia as well! The playoff committee will really be challenged to stick to what they have said after they allowed Bama to get in after not making it's own championship game. Supposedly, winning your conference means something and has more value than just a good record and good perception.

- - did they prove to be right though? I mean, yes, they won the game and ultimately were crowned champions! But, should they have gotten the opportunity? You are talking - didn't have to play in the SECCG. Which gave you time to heal any nicks and lingering injuries! It gave your 1st round opponent and extra game and less time to heal up!
Citadeldawg84 - every year since college football has started you could make the argument that the best team didn't win. That year was no exception in my eyes. What happened to me was a team was given a chance after having dropped the ball. In prior years, even though people felt team X, Y or Z was better - they had lost. They were never given a chance to be considered #1. Bama was and to their credit they took advantage. You all could have played that like an NBA series and I think Georgia wins the series! Same thing in 2015 - if we played best of 7 with Bama Clemson wins the series 4-2. It was their night - granted them when it should not have been! They wouldn't have been the 1st team that was deserving that didn't get a chance!

No, I don't think they should have had the right to "sneak" in ... I would like to see it CCG winners only ... then the early season losses really do hurt.
You are correct ... no system is without fault ... You have the best team "over all for the season" then you have those that are "playing the best" at the end of the season ... and everywhere in between.
I really have no major complaints about the system because of this reason. I love my Dawgs but not going to get bent (too bad) if the don't make it because how it is set up. I have much bigger problems in my life ... lol

I hear that! Me too! LOL! I am just taking a few days off work so I don't lose the days hoping to talk a little football. You can't let it get you bent out of shape as as you said, "the system isn't without faults"!
I think most posters on Tnet would agree(could be wrong) b/c of the perception of the ACC Clemson could not lose a game and get in this year. Assuming LSU keeps rolling as well as Georgia and Alabama! Auburn still controls it's own destiny as well b/c they still have LSU and Bama on the schedule.
I hope the dawgs beat u of sux 44-16 Citadeldawg84 LOL!

I think that winning your conference should matter in terms of a tiebreaker between two teams. I don't think it should be a flat requirement though. You mention that Bama dropped the ball that year by losing to Auburn. Did Georgia not drop the ball also by losing to that same Auburn team? Did Clemson not drop the ball the same year by losing to Syracuse? Or is the ball only dropped if the team you lost to happened to be good enough to go at least 7-1 in conference and be in your same division?
Clemson still got into the ACC title game that season because Syracuse wasn't good enough to finish with a record that would get them in the game ahead of Clemson. Georgia only got in because Auburn wasn't in the same division as them. I do think Ohio State should have and would have gotten in ahead of Bama that year had they only lost 1 game instead of 2.

I also don't see the extra week off by not playing in a conference title game as being a big deal. There was about a 4 week period between the conference title games and the first playoff games. If a team isn't fully rested and healed up after 4 weeks off then it's doubtful they will be after 5 weeks.

Clemson2003 - if you listen to the many excuses the biggest perhaps being: "Alabama was tired from their grueling SEC schedule" then it does make sense. Especially if one believes the SEC is all that and a bag of chips as a conference top to bottom!
It isn't but - when they want it to be it does!

their way to emphasize that Conference Champions would be given preference over non-Champions. And yet, every year since the inception, the pundits have tried to get the exact opposite to happen, trying to get multiple teams from the SEC in at the expense of a Conference Champion. Good thing they don't run the Playoffs.

How you are playing late!
Oct 8, 2019, 1:31 PM
|

I've seen this in H.S. a bunch. But, in college and in the NFL as well! How well are you playing late in the season? Are you coasting by and sleep walking? Are you just hitting your stride? Do you have significant key players out? All of that has to be considered by a playoff committee.
It's way too early to speculate about all that! Let's say other teams are not looking as dominant late and Wake is starting to look like 2009 Oregon with Chip Kelly late season - no brainer they get in!

It depends whether the committee considers potential ticket sales. Would a 3,500-ticket team make it in over a 35,000 ticket team? Or is TV revenue all that matters?
