One real gem from the special counsel report

Is that Biden has spelled Afghanistan incorrectly his entire life, spelling it “Afganastan”. Oh yeah, and one of the boxes with classified info was labeled with that spelling, in his handwriting——-but his staffers are the ones that moved all that stuff.

Never assume politicians are smarter than you…..never.

I'm not going to defend Biden, but I will defend bad spellers. Being good at spelling is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition of being intelligent.

I'm a fantastic speller, by the way, and you can see how that helps prove my point.

Seems like you ought to be able to spell the place where you made decisions that literally cost peoples’ lives.

Messing it up here or there clearly wouldn’t be a red flag. Doing it over a lifetime in politics, over a place you claim is so important to you that you almost resigned the Vice Presidency over it, shows some signs of buffoonery.

What do you think his memo to Obama said?

The notion of a "correct" spelling of words (known as orthography) came into fashion around the time of Samuel Johnson's dictionary in the 18th century.

The founding fathers? Well, they misspelled British "Brittish" in the Declaration of Independence. So obviously you think they were dopes. I mean, they declared independence from them and couldn't even spell their name.

So no, they were quite correct, judging them by those standards. Similarly, judging Biden by the conventions of modern times, his continual misspelling of Afghanistan is quite moronic.

For a guy who “isn’t going to defend Biden”, you sure are trying hard to defend Biden.

What your point is.

B) “Brittish” much like “compleat”, also in the document, was absolutely an accepted spelling at the time. Don’t take my word for it—assume you can make the inference from “obsolete” that there was a time when it was acceptable. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Brittish

C) none of this, as much as you want it to, detracts from the fact that Biden is intellectually deficient in many areas.

B) They were already spelling it "British" by 1776, and the Declaration spells "British" correctly elsewhere.

C) As I said in the beginning, everything I have said is a defense of bad spellers, not of Biden.

context matters

Simple poor spelling is not the beginning and end of the matter. My daughter is a straight A student and got a 5 in AP calc as a junior. She also frequently mixes up “your” and “you’re”. It drives me nuts but I don’t suspect she might be a little slow.

If, however, after playing the sport for 10+ years (much less the 50 year window we are talking about for Biden), she still spelled “lacrosse” as “lacraws” or similar, I might start wondering if all the synapses were firing.

I also would probably not go back to a physician who sent me home with a referral for a Kardiack stres test, or a lawyer who recommended I plead knowlo kuntindre.

So there is some sympathy for basic misspellings, but if it’s something heavily within the sphere of a topic you are exposed to almost daily and supposed to have some level of expertise on, any and all benefits of the doubt are out the window. You are either slower than you are purporting to be, or possess an attention for detail so low that you are likely not qualified for the profession in which you are employed.

I mean, on the one hand you got Biden labelling a folder wrong, and on the other hand you have a screwup in one of our nation's most sacred founding documents. That's context, but only in response to your post. My initial remark wasn't meant as a defense of Biden, and I believe I was fairly explicit about that.

And yes I'm slower than I probably appear, which I hinted at before.
