It occured to me Saturday Evening....what do you think?

While I was watching Clemson attempt to give another game away in the second half. I thought to myself, maybe our lack of adjusting to the other teams adjustments out of the half has to do with the inexperience we have at the Coordinator positions. I don't know why this never occurred to me before, but it was the best way I could explain our almost total lack of competent adjustments to what SMU and other teams were doing in the second half all year. Neither of the coordinators have real time on field coaching, and so they cannot adjust when they do not know how to adjust, or what exactly they are looking at.

Don't get me wrong, I am grateful Clemson won, but I wish we could get the same production in the second half that we did in the first. And I wish we could adjust in real time with some form of competency as I do not have confidence that Clemson will win @ Texas.

Are we confident in our coordinators to make necessary changes that are effective late in games? Do you think that is due to their inexperience? Make me believe in this teams chances to win it all....I am looking for anything to help me believe.

I think it has more to do with a lack of depth...

and the struggle by the offense to move the ball.

The Clemson defense was clearly gassed. Had the game gone into OT, the outcome might have been very different.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

You maybe right as I have seen this across College Football this year.

It seems as though as a whole, the defenses have suffered the most this year in the Portal era. There doesn't seem to be as many dominant defenses as there used to be because of depth. So you maybe right, but I still don't think that gets to the heart of why both sides of the ball are so unproductive later in games.

It appears, at least to some...

that Clemson gets very conservative with the play calling content to sit on a lead and milk the clock.

Obviously you need to be able to run the ball and gain first downs

To milk the clock. I think we try to milk the clock, we just simply cannot.

All of this has been discussed a lot.

Maybe the SMU coach at halftime in their lockeroom gave one #### of a motivating speech and the players responded, which they did. However, our coaches and players have to respond also, which is why we won. Go Tigers beat the Horns in Austin.

Lack of depth, lack of experience (particularly at the defensive coordinator position), and a lot of team speed by SMU---are all factors.

SMU has tremendous team speed. That really impressed me.

Gotta say that the loss of Haynes and Mafa only being able to play at about 40% gave Riley very few options. Our running game was essentailly dead and SMU knew that. Defensively they took advantage of us being a pass only offense for the entire 2nd half.

Expereincewise I would not say they have no experience...just not decades of experience.

I can get along with that, but...

That only explains the lack of production on the offensive side of the ball and not the lack on the defensive side. I know they have some experience, but neither of these dudes were "the man" in their prior roles, and one of them never coached on his side of the ball prior to being the coordinator.

It is one thing to have a guy 3-4 years in that has been a coordinator. It's another thing to have the two options we have right now. I guess what I am saying is, could what we have seen this year been growing pains and nothing more. I don't think that either of these guys are bad people, and I had wished Dabo would have gone out and got an experienced coordinator for Defense. But I also realize that these guys may eventually be great coaches and what we are seeing may be growing pains.

Just wondering
... if things are going well in the first half...why make half time adjustments? When you are down, it makes sense...but if you are moving the ball and the defense is making the stops...what do you adjust?

The 0:45 second drive with the game on the line was alarming

Clemson's D was gassed and the Prevent-D was broken. Running plays were need to run clock. Mafah had been injured & slowed for weeks. Passes were missed on the drive and the coverage was tight.

Randall, Cade, Williams, and Hauser to the rescue! Go Tigers!
