Defensive Coordinator

Just scrolling through the NCAA Defensive stats and looking for a potential place that Dabo might go for someone. Most of the better defenses statistically are teams in the Big 10 or SEC and it's unlikely they'd come to the ACC. In looking at the NCAA Rushing Defense stats, the team that's head and heels above any other is JMU. Granted, they are from a lower ranked conference but assuming their teams play against teams with roughly equal talent, it's a pretty impressive stat. The guy leading that defense has ACC ties and comes from a football pedigree (his father was a successful football coach). If Dabo is thinking outside the box, he may give some consideration to this guy...

Yeah, he shared the defensive coordinator position with Stoops' brother. Not a good situation there...he wanted to get out.

Yes, he had been a Highly Successful HS Coach! However, he had been an on Field Coach. Wes Goodwin had never been an On Field Coach - - not even on the Pop Warner Level!

It's a no brainer to hire Charlie Strong as your DC. Clemson's defense would rise to the level of at least the 10th best defense in the country in a year, a lot better than 70th.

You say this like it’s a forgone conclusion that Dabo Fires Goodwin.
Maybe but I would not be so sure!
I also am not sure it’s needed and you are talking about a real flesh and blood person.

Best available solution right now. That being said, we need an immediate fix as to why our run d is so atrocious. We had 2 returning starters at lb, with Carter having extensive experience and varying all American status. Add in Sammy, and you would have thought we would have defended the run much better. Trotter leaving could not have been the lone reason that our run d went to total garbage. Also, losing Trotter and Wiggins should not account for tge slip in total d in one year

To add to the returning experience. With BV as dc and lb coach, this would have been a much more stronger unit and overall better defensive product

So what’s the reason?
Everyone always blames the coach.. I am sure He has something to do with it however He is not on the field.
He is not missing tackles..
He is not the lineman that looks overweight and out of shape.
Of course I always give credit to the opponents as well.

The coaches set the tone for the players. The coaches harp on the basics and hold the players accountable for doing it the right way every time. If the coaches slack off, so will the players. Why would a coach slack off? Because someone is allowing it to happen without consequence. That someone, I believe, is Coach Goodwin. Probably a very nice guy, but in an Alpha male environment, that is a sign of weakness. If Wes doesn't publicly get in someone's face now and again, he won't be taken seriously. Maybe he is doing all that, but i doubt it. However, I'm not the one being paid $11 million a year to run the program, so my opinion doesn't count. I am sure Dabo knows more than me in any case. So this is me really just venting and not being constructive, I guess. Constructive behavior on my part would be donating more money to the program than I already do.
Anyway, the season is over and we will see what happens. It's been entertaining, to say the least!
Merry Christmas everyone, coaches too!

A few things I agree with you on.
One you are not the coach and you do not know what goes on at practice or the game. Dabo and the coaches do.
You assume that being a jerk and hollering at people and pounding your chest is the only way to get your point across, it’s not! Not even on a Football team.
As a matter of fact in this day and time it might be the worst personality you can have to try and get people to work or play for you!
He may not be an athlete or in your face but He apparently is a pretty sharp guy or He would not have even got the opportunity!
Why is no one blaming Eason?? Or the other line coach. It’s their group that’s the biggest problem on defense…. Maybe it’s the players fault.

To me, the number one issue (there are more than one) is at DE. There was a look on the first Texas rushing TD from behind the QB and the issue was blatantly obvious. There were 3 dudes with Lawson. He was giving up like 75lbs on the tackle. How hard is that to diagnose? Find the little guy and run at him.

Now this is not to take a shot at him, because the DE room as a whole was largely underwhelming. Take away Parker, and that is just miles away from our glory years. We have no one in the second string CLOSE to Austin Bryant who came into the post season and did an outstanding job. That is the issue to me - we just need more dudes.

Now the portal get will help, but IMO, we need two or three blue chip additions. Time will tell if there are more to come.

Now, from the looks of it, many here think that Goodwin is responsible for this and should be gone. There is certainly an argument for that. From my perspective, laying the blame solely on his feet is unfair. Dabo also has some culpability here and really all those in the recruiting process. To me, though, firing is the easy way out and exactly the wrong thing to do. I believe the staff can coach. The question is can we recruit and retain in today’s environment? THAT is what needs fixing.

he is the1 who should be correcting these problems that have happened 2 yrs***

I will admit I'm not anything close to a defensive guru but I think the inability to set the edge opposite of TJ Parker was a big issue all year, Lawson will be a very good player for us before it is all said and done but he is still a work in progress and he needs to gain about 15 more lbs and get stronger to adequately set a hard edge. Other than that tackling has been a huge problem for us, sometimes we've been in position to make a plan and then the RB runs through the tackle and we're needing a safety to chase the RB down 15 yards down the field.

Just replace Goodwin with an EXPERIENCED Defensive Coordinator who preaches physicality, and understands HOW to adjust to the offenses that he is up against...halftime adjustments, immediate transactions to shut down a team that is running the same plays, etc. That is not Wes. End this guy!!!!! Upon examining the overall state of Clemson's program, you have include the slow historical regression of Dabo Swinney's coaching record. If you pay attention Dabo's record for the last 4 years, it has been 39-14 from 2021-2024. The 'peak years' of Clemson football were from 2015-2020,(where 2 Natty's were won). His overall record during this period was a stellar 79-7. In the last four years of his career, he has lost TWICE the amount of games than he did during the peak years of 2015-2020. Based upon the pattern of losing 1-2 games more than he lost the previous season spells a "slow burn" of deterioration of the program under his leadership. This is the 1st season where Clemson has lost 4 games since 2011. That's 13 years. The mere fact that Clemson has lost to South Carolina 2 times in the last 3 years is also quite alarming. During the peak years Clemson never lost to the Gamecocks. So in reviewing the recent history of this college football program, one must conclude that a meltdown is occuring, and it cannot be ignored. This run to the Playoff (vs.Texas) was deceptive. They backdoored their way in, and it fooled everybody. Texas beat the spread (13.5 points), winning by 14, and showed the nation it was a superior program to Clemson. This wasn't a moral victory. It was a convincing victory for the Longhorns. Dabo will not fire Wes Goodwin nor his 2-3 defensive coaches who should be. This will lead to 7-5 or 6-6 record next year, as the digression continues. If Cade Klubnik leaves, it'll get worse. I love Clemson Football, from the days of Charlie Pell/Danny Ford, until now. that's decades. However, as a HISTORY buff, I see the end coming for Dabo Swinney's reign at Clemson, unless monumental changes are made within his defensive staff, and I don't see that happening. Seneca HS could have done a better job of defending Texas than what I witnessed Saturday. It was a disgrace to the game of football. It is my estimation upon reveiwing all these factors, that Dabo Swinney must leave Clemson, whether in retirement, or moving on to another school before Clemson loses its national image as a prominent college football power.

I don’t believe coaches are overly concerned about their conference affiliation. For instance, Clemson has demonstrated a willingness to compensate coaches based on their performance, and they have proven to be quite effective in doing so.

To me, it seems like this guy really coaches his guys up! They always say, defenses win games. It seems every team he coaches gets with takeaways. That is positive momentum for a team. We need that. Duke and WF, he must do something right! The last time we had father son coaches, was Jeff Scott. Maybe Hemphill will be the same way. Can’t wait for HR, either.
