Someone mentioned the other day about the 1990 team winning the ACC regular season. I thought I would look back at that roster. I remembered they were good but forgotten how solid that roster really was:
Starters Elden Campbell 6-11 C NBA Player, left as alltime leading scorer Dale Davis 6-11 F, very good NBA player, one of the alltime CU greats Ricky Jones 6-7 F, Parade All American Marion Cash 6-3 PG, very solid Derrick Forrest 6-3 G, one of the best leapers in CU history, highlight dunks, great defender
Off the bench David Young, 6-5 G, Parade All American, he and TO are the best pure 3 pt shooters in CU history Sean Tyson 6-7 F, built like Mike Tyson, solid backup Krkland Howling 6-4 guard, excellent shooter Wayne Buckingham 6-8 C, solid backup, got screwed by the NCAA
To me, this 1990 team is the second best team in CU history with the 1980 team being first. Barnes had some solid teams too.

This year’s team has a very solid backcourt with good depth.

That team won the league when the ACC was the dominant conference in the nation. This one is winning with one good team in the league. That’s why they are not moving up in any of the rankings. Maybe 3 ACC teams get in the tournament. By comparison the SEC could place 12 or 13.

Let's see how this team does in postseason play.

The 1990 team made the Sweet 16, which unfortunately doesn't count anymore since we cheated. The NCAA vacated those wins as part of their sanctions.
I believe this year's team is capable of making the Sweet 16, with the opportunity for more if we get favorable matchups and are playing at a high level in March.

That team lost on a last second shot by UConn as Tyson made no real attempt at defending the shot. UConn turned around and lost to Duke 2 days later on a Laettner last second shot. I think we could have beaten Duke if we had held on against UConn.
As for Buckingham, the whole transcipt issue the NCAA brought against Clemson was a farce and has been debunked. After initially saying he could play, they came back and said one of his HS classes was not accepted. Clemson never deliberately tried to play an ineligible player.
Whether this year's team is a better team is yet to be determined. I like their potential to make a deep run, espcially if Lahkin stays healthy. But it is pretty clear the 1990 team was much more talented.

No, because that team as they were wouldn't even exist today. Eldon was a senior. David a Jr. I doubt they would have even played together that year. If they did, I am not sure who would would have some better. I lean towards that old team.

I though about that as I was typing the list of players.
You could not have a roster like that today with transfers, although Howling and Forrest were transfers.

No, more top NBA talent on that team. Backcourt might be better on this team.
BTW, that team was at Clemson last night. link:

the 1990 team is bettter . Davis and Campbell would kill the current team on the glass. Cash and Forrest were terrific guards and the 1990 team had depth also. Look at the schedule and caliber of ACC teams the 1990 team beat that year, just astonishing .

GT and Duke. UNC never finished below third for about a million years in a row so that year was avg for them.
And Clemson won the league in one of the toughest years ever.

No. We always tend to be prisoners of the moment. The 1990 team had two front court players who played in the NBA for over a decade. And the ACC was absolutely bad@zz back then. Campbell/Davis would pound Shieff/Lakhin into submission.

They don't have the athletic talent of that team but they shoot the ball better especially from the line where we've lost so many important games in the past.
