Is there a QB path that gives us a chance to compete for Natty?

Oct 22, 2022, 5:41 PM

I could be wrong but it seems we’ve hit a ceiling with DJ. Yea I get it, he had a bad day, but his best days this season don’t overwhelm me with confidence. Cade coming in isn’t anything like DW4 or Trevor freshman appearances. I believe we could win out with Hunter playing QB but I guess the real question is if we can’t raise expectations with Cade after almost 2 years watching DJ struggle have we missed twice in QB recruiting? I don’t believe we are competitive in CFP with DJ. I’d really like to see Cade get reps and be given more real opportunities in next few weeks. I think we’ve seen DJs ceiling, I hope Cades is higher. Guess what I’m saying is if we’re going to lose in first round of playoffs why not grow the young guy. Ok bring the hate

Nobody should come with hate, but you should be embarrassed to show how little you know about football or team sports in general.

I’m not embarrassed about anything, I’m grateful that the other posts were thoughtful responses to my question. A QB performance like DJ today is not defendable. Missing wide open receivers is not a receiver problem. He had protection so you can’t blame the line. I had more confidence in Kelly Bryant. I am not looking forward to being embarrassed in the first round of the CFP

I agree with him. DJ regressed greatly. If you are elite, this doesn't happen. Everyone is not at their best, but there are certain things you can always do. DJ was a huge liability today. Huge. he stunk it up. You can't fumble twice, throw two picks and make the poor decisions he did. Then add to that that Streeter things a running DJ is a viable threat. pretty scary. Klub is definitely not ready. I had hoped he would be ready at this point in the year. But he clearly is not. But DJs play will determine what we do. We do not have the stars to cover for DJ. Other than Shipley, we have no offensive stars. If we don't have very good to great QB play on any giver Saturday, we are in trouble.

DJ peaked at Wake. Today reminds us all that he's come far but is very very fallible.

Hard to say Cade's got the rocket sauce, either. He looked a little green but in his defense, that was a high-pressure ask from Dabo today.

But you can win without an elite QB. Georgia did it.

Cade’s a freshman with limited game experience this year. DW4 and Trev were generational talent. We also were stacked with receivers then, this year, we don’t have that. He’s going to be great.

Cade can very easily become a legend here, gotta water the plant to get the fruit though. He needs reps at this level with the #1s. The guy never lost in HS in TEXAS! 30-0 in the 6A football aint a joke. Yall don't understand what an accomplishment that is if you think this kid can't become a college great. Klubnik is going to be special but they need to let the kid play for real.

QB's like Trevor and Deshaun are incredibly rare

Oct 22, 2022, 5:48 PM

You just don't see that many QBs who can come in as a true freshman and be "plug and play" for the highest level of college football. I really believe we have something special in Cade, but he's going to need more time. He has the skills and the tools to get us there. As for DJ, well... at this point I would sure like to see more consistency with him. Because when he's bad, he's REAL bad. And he's been in the program a LONG time now. He should be hitting his 5-star potential by now. He looked like crap today.

Good points....but there is one thing that could change it all...
That is to teach DJ how to scrabble out of the pocket.
He is not extending plays...it drop back, then take sack or run up the middle..

You’re free to have your opinion

Oct 22, 2022, 5:53 PM

Even if it’s wrong. Prior to today, DJU has played spectacularly in every game except the GT game 1st half. Go back and look at the dimes he’s dropped on receivers all over the field. Even when he threw a pick, he shook it off and went right back to threading the needle. He’s also protected the football on runs so much better than last year.

Today was weird; he was bad. I don’t pretend to know what was in his head today. My only hope is that he has not regressed, but give it the next game before giving up on him.

Don’t mean to be argumentative but for every dime there’s been at least one and I’d suggest maybe two big misses.

to just a few points. This is a team that progresses throughout the season. We need DJU, we need Cade (like today!). there is no simple answer that makes things better.

To have an absolutely awful day against an unbeaten team and WIN is huge! Everyone, including DJU, contributed to the win! Yes, he threw picks and fumbled a scoop and score. He'll bounce back before most of TNET does! Thankfully!

I do not see QB path for Clemson to win Natty

Oct 22, 2022, 6:24 PM

Make the playoffs - yes. The posters who state DJ is playing at his ceiling due to immobility are correct. Those who state Cade has not played enough to be prepared for tougher playoff competition this year are also right. Clemson has played a few above average teams and an exceptional Wake QB. But Clemson has by and large played mediocre teams. Ohio St, Bama, UGA and a handful will be very difficult to beat. That won’t stop me from pulling hard for the Tigers.

As for QB position, IMHO Dabo should play both QB’s the rest of the season to optimize opportunities. Go Tigers!

Re: I do not see QB path for Clemson to win Natty

Oct 22, 2022, 11:45 PM [ in reply to I do not see QB path for Clemson to win Natty ]

I tend to think you're right and this is the best explanation. DJ is at his ceiling, which is a good, but not great, QB. He does not handle adversity in game-time situations particularly well, and so mistakes tend to snowball. If he doesn't make any costly mistakes, then he can play incredibly well. But if he makes one, then he makes another, and another and gets in a funk. That's the case for some very elite athletes as well. I remember years ago Cowherd had one of the stars of the Heat on, who was saying one of those three big stars was like that. If he missed his first two shots, he'd be off all night. If he hit them, he'd dominate.

Cade seems to bring way more energy to the table and the team plays better around him when he's out there. He also can avoid defenders and extend plays with his quickness, something DJ can't do. What I don't know is if he's ready to run a good passing attack. He had that beautiful 2 point pass today, but he also seemed very hesitant to throw it, and definitely got happy feet which led to negative yardage.

At the end of the day, no, I don't think either QB has what it takes this year to beat the big three, at least with the talent surrounding them. (I think both of our QBs would be much better with better pass blocking and receivers who are actually capable of getting separation (us recruiting a million 6'4" possession guys was a terrible move when the best receivers are the speedy, explosive ones). Those defenses are too fast and too aggressive. I think they'd get into DJ's head and he'd probably make some very costly mistakes, and I don't think Cade can attack them vertically on the outside, which you have to do to beat them (I think he'll get there, I just don't think he has the experience to do that right now).

If we were entering the playoffs, I would choose DJ though. He has the arm talent to attack the corners if we could keep them off of him.

If we remain undefeated we will compete.

Not this year. DJ has been in the system for a while. He's

Oct 22, 2022, 8:58 PM

not a late transfer trying to learn the system, or an 18 year old freshman right out of HS. It is what it is, as they say. We know what to expect by now. He may drop a dime for a TD, or miss two open receivers as he goes through (or doesn't) the progressions, or maybe just steps on his own d!ck and fumbles. You just never know.

What I do know is this: If we'd played Bama, UGA, Ohio St, etc today, the woodshed would be seeking a restraining order.

Re: Is there a QB path that gives us a chance to compete for Natty?

DJ has statistically been near the top of all QB categories and was playing great. He actually had better numbers than both DW4 and TL16 through 7 games, prior to today.

The question you need to be asking is why Hunter Johnson isn't #2 on the depth chart when he has multiple years of P5 starting QB experience.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Is there a QB path that gives us a chance to compete for Natty?

Oct 22, 2022, 11:55 PM

Hunter to me was shocking. He looked so good in high school. I think I remember Peyton Manning praising him. Then the game never slowed down for him. Hunter was the person I was backing in 2017 (I fully recognized he wasn't great, but I thought any QB with THAT defense and talent around them would win out in the playoffs, and then he'd hopefully be more of a passing threat against Alabama than Bryant). Just weird how far he fell.

TBC, DJ has been a good QB, but he has NOT statistically been near the top of QB categories. He was #39 in QBR, #37 in yards, #57 in yards per attempt, #57 in completion percentage, and #15 in total touchdowns. Outside of touchdowns, he's been perfectly average for a P5 QB.

Because with your kind of thinking, there wouldn't be a playoff game to lose because we wouldn't be in the playoffs to begin with.
