Is Oregon really that good?

Oregon is ranked 3rd in the country in scoring. But lets look a bit closer at that.
Only one team in the PAC 12 knows how to spell defense (Stanford) who ranks 5th in the country in defense (287 ypg)
Only one team in the PAC 12 (Stanford 16 ppg against) gives up less points per game than FSU (22 ppg against). Oregon gives up 22.3 ppg.
Every other member of the PAC 12 gives up an average of over 400 yards per game. http://pac-12.com/content/football-statistics
The Ducks actually rank 80th in total defense. What happens when they play against someone that has a pulse on defense and proficient on offense?
Are they really the #2 team in the country?

I don't disagree with that but I feel like they've been elevated to "juggernaut" status.
The defensive numbers don't bear that out

Oregon and Clemson defenses have had no similarity nor have I heard anyone say so.
Not sure where that came from

I think ragtop is talking about how people have chalked our defensive success up to playing poor offenses when it goes beyond that. Perhaps Oregon still has an elite offense despite the defenses they've played.

This. A lot of people were saying the great ACC defenses were a result of the poor offenses in the conferences.

How does the pace and style of their offense affect their defensive stats? Could be a factor, especially looking at their opponents.

Good question but the point I'm trying to make is Oregon's offense, not defense. I want to see how that offense performs against a good D. While FSU doesn't have a top-ranked defense, they do have some talent and time to prepare.

Oregon improved on defense as the year went along.

The numbers don't reflect how well they're playing on that side of the ball right now.
Also, FSU hasn't been able to stop anyone all year. I don't expect them to start with Oregon.

I'm not sure how much they really improved

You have to look at the teams they were playing to determine if they really "improved" or if their quality of competition declined. All the great offenses they played were in their first 8 games.
They obviously improved their defensive performance against Arizona from when they lost to them earlier in the year, but Arizona had a true freshman QB and was unpredictable all year.

Oregon is by far the best team in the country! They have the best player in the country in Marcus Mariota, an extremely talented running back in Royce Freeman, and speed that kills at wideout. They have every weapon on offense! They're defense played lights out against an Arizona team that is pretty dang stout on offense and Oregon's offense made Arizona's defense look like little boys. Considering Arizona has the leading sacker in the country in Scooby Wright and they're defense has been very good this year. Promise you Oregon wins it all.

It's a conference with very good systems, very good coaches, and very good quarterback play. The defenses aren't great, no, but a lot of the crazy numbers being put up are the result of very good offenses. Take a look at the coaches & quarterbacks out there.
