Is any college football player worth 2.7 million?

I think not. And can that school afford to buy many more players? And how will the other players react when the primadona player does not perform?
I guess we will see.

What's a school's football program worth? Don't fool yourself, there are investors ponying up the money for these players and you better believe they are getting a return on their investment. As long as they make money they will continue to spend money on these kids. I don't like it anymore than most of you but I can't blame the kids either.

So how are they getting a return on there money? How are the “ investing” ? I see people donating and they will get tired of donating that much money! There is not a Billionaire made everyday and I would dare say most schools don’t have a billionaire. This system stinks! This system will not last! The only question is will it totally destroy college sports?

This is a small quote from an article on NIL. private equity and other investment firms are inserting themselves into college sports, on both the player and the program side So before you dispute what everyone is saying, do some research first 1965Tiger.

Not likely for investor in $2.7M player - yes to Nil investors of teammates

On the marginal aspects of NIL investment in individual teams, there might be positive ROI for those smaller $ investments. Overall, I doubt very much that NIL provides a positive ROI.
Let’s take MI and 2025 recruiting class QB Bryce Underwood (I think that’s name). Barstool Sports principal owner coughed up ~$12M in NIL money to buy off Underwood to flip to MI.
Unless Bryce Underwood is a Wizard of Wall Street money manager who will invest Barsttol Sports cash reserves into Nancy Pelosi-esque stock market returns, Underwood’s image and occasional appearances on Barstool’s website and podcasts won’t get a positive ROI.
Portnoy ‘bought’ Underwood for reasons of ego. Kind of like buying a Maserati instead of a Subaru. Or, he made a terrible business decision.
As for the ‘on the margin’ NIL investors in less luminescent players, there might be a positive ROI. Say that Underwood leads MI to multiple National Championships. A consortium of three investors, each being executive managers of an insurance company, an anti-theft security systems company, and a home fire extinguisher company respectively, invest in a NIL for a MI offensive tackle. The offensive tackle’s NIL deal is worth $360000 over 4 years; cost per year for each of the three NIL members in the consortium Every player on the MI team has more ‘image value’ because MI had gotten tremendous new publicity by winning several Nat.Championships with Underwood at WB. The three NIL investors each chipped in $120,000 share. Each year’s NIL cost for each of the three members is $30,000.
It is feasible that an expense of $30,000 per year might bring in additional sales of $120,000 per year that generate pre-tax profits of $40,000 per year. In this scenario, the small NIL investors get a positive ROI from their NIL investment.
For investors in small NIL expenses for the non-star players, there might indeed be a positive ROI, but the guy who pays the huge bucks for World’s Biggest Stud Player, the ROI would almost assuredly be negative.

I’d say yea. Many are making much more. Players like Travis Hunter put butts in seats. You better believe I’d pay him more than that. But, I’ve ran successful businesses. Football is a business. Just a fact. Players. Put. Butts. In. Seats.

Who made money off of Travis Hunter’s NIL? This is about boosters paying for the betterment of their team. Oregon and Michigan are in an NIL level by themselves. None of the SEC teams can keep up with those two with NIL payments.

Where am I wrong?! Bring some receipts. Name one elite transfer that didn’t work out. Remember the majority of the first round draft picks were transfers. Including the top five players.

I’m curious if YOU have ever successfully managed a payroll.
When you have an irreplaceable star, you’d better make sure they get paid like it.
A closing salesman, a closing pitcher, a closing lawyer—everyone else does the set-up, and if the closer leaves for greener pastures the business has to lay people off—only immature children would mutiny.

This right here. Years ago, in my first management position I had two people that worked for me, that were responsible for about 70% of the production in my department. They had worked for the company for 5 years, and in that time had only received 1 raise. They were the quiet type who didn't like to rock the boat. Eventually it got to a point where they had to say something to me. So I went to the plant manager and told him he would lose them if they didn't get a SUBSTANTIAL raise, not the meager raise they got before. He beat around the bush with me and I probably told him about 5 times. Fi ally I went to them and told them they should go to the plant manager and put their two weeks notice in. Needless to say they were back the next day with a nice raise.

The problem is the money made from putting butts in seats is not the money that’s paying the players. Remember the players wanted a cut of the money made off of them. As of today, that has not happened.

You are combining two different things, NIL payment and money made from putting butts in seats. How are the rich boosters getting a financial return on investment from their NIL contributions? The boosters are not getting any of the revenue from attendance and they are not getting any of the tv revenue. The players wanted a cut of the profits and that still has not happened. That is why most boosters are getting fed up because they are being asked to add NIL collective money on top of their tickets costs and boosters organizations.
The have NIL players which are few are killing it for the majority of the have not players. Look at the players in the portal that are no longer in school getting a free college degree. The entire thing is a mess. When an SEC school cannot keep up with Oregon and Michigan, college football is on life support.

People are going to fill the seats and watch the games regardless of Travis Hunter or anyone else. It’s college football. It sells itself.
Clemson had huge crowds at our lowest times. Pro crowds are a little different depending on the fan base and the history of the franchise.

Collége names definitely put people in the seats, but when the team is good and puts on a show, the school makes a lot more. The name will only go so far if the team is boring and isn't winning enough.

It has been a boon to the university. I remember coming back from the 2016 natty and Rick neuheisal talking about how big of a deal it was to clemson. He said that the increase in interest in athletics and academics would be HUGE! The university has capitalized. Way more than any amount you can place on one players head.

Clemson cannot pay players. The question becomes “Does Clemson have a booster willing to let go of the millions per year to keep a DW4 or TL16 type of player on the roster?” If so, that booster would not make a penny on the millions paid to the player.

I do believe people will watch college no matter who the qbs are so idk that the players are what drives the money. That said they are the ones playing the game and usually the qb is the face of a team. I'd say most college teams are worth millions and millions so you could say the starting qb is certainly worth a portion of that.

The player is not worth it but as far as the school, the money is most likely not from the school. You have to realize how big schools are how much much money they get from the states that support. Would there be enough in the school's to support the hundreds of men and athletes that represent the school, absolutely not.

Only because we the fans demand our teams to be good. If it were not for the rivalries not as many people would care. I’m assuming you are referring to the Coot QB. They are obsessed with beating CU and getting a natty since we won 3. I could go on but I’m tired now

Consider Miami and Cam Ward. They didn't make the playoffs. They didn't even make it to Charlotte. But, the school benefitted far more than 2.7 million bucks for him.
And, the good news for Miami is the school didn't even pay his NIL deal (whatever it was). It was paid for by people using their money, not the school's.
Same with Sellars. He's not costing USCe the 2.7 million bucks. He's being paid by people who voluntarily agreed to pay him that money.

It appears you’re referring to USCjr.s QB — Sellers. The answer is yes. He’s a likely Heisman front runner next season if their team has a pulse. Wins and Success bring in revenue. $2.7M is a steal TBH.

To your ?. No, not even close. Some of these guys won’t sniff the NFL. Better get it while they can.

Almost certainly. NFL QBs are making 30-60mil/year

College QBs will obviously be worth less, but you're talking about less than 10% of a bottom tier NFL QB and less than 5% of the top guys.
Texas reported 183mil in football revenue last year. That's about 1/3 of an NFL franchise revenue (per Google anyway). With that type of money coming in at the top programs, I don't think you can argue a top QB isnt worth even 5% of a top NFL QB. There's not a large enough revenue discrepancy to justify that large of "salary" difference IMO.

I’ll piggy back what iv been asking since this all started to get out of hand… how is this worth determined, as in what’s in it for these donors to give this and what is the actual ROI?? Bc look at a guy like Travis Hunter or the Duke qb… what are we paying all that money for to see 9 wins? Bc to have that big of an impact you need like 5 special players I mean Colorado didn’t even make the playoff … just crazy questions I have about how long this can actually last .
