Interesting Read - Cost of Attending Clemson

Oct 17, 2014, 6:59 PM

Just came across an interesting read from the 1904 Oconeean (this was the name of the Clemson Yearbook prior to Taps... I have a copy of it from an old box of books my dad had...)

Clemson Agricultural College
Expenses
The deposit required from each student on admission is $62.88, except in the case of students who receive tuition free, when it is $52.88, which includes full uniform. Free tuition is given only to residents of the State. Blank applications for free tuition will be sent when applied for. After the first deposit a quarterly deposit of $26.88 for pay tuition students, and $16.88 for free tuition students is required at the beginning of each quarter. The quarters begin as follow: September 14, 1904; November 15, 1904; January 26, 1905, and April 4, 1905.

This gives a total of $143.42 per year for students paying tuition, and $103.42 per year for students who receive tuition free.

These deposits pay for board, tuition, laundry fee, incidental fee, breakage fee, medial fee and one uniform. Books and other necessary articles not mentioned will be furnished at cost.

Each student is required to bring four sheets, two blankets, one comfort, six towels, two pillow-cases and one pillow.

For further information, address: P.H. Mell, President

----I wonder what "breakage fee" covered????

Just thought some of you may get a kick out of this. Some of the pics in this book are pretty cool too, including the football and baseball team!

Breakage fee covered the end of any students foot that was accidentally hung up in the posterior of an encroaching Coot .

If you look at page 138 0f the 1904 Oconeean there is a glossary of terms. For "Breakage Fee" it is defined as "The Faculty's cigar fund". I assume this is just the cadets' take on it. Cool stuff....

By using this link $143 in 1905 would be about $3600 in 2013. It looks like the price of higher education has outpace inflation by 6-8 times, if you assume $20K/yr now.

That doesn't include tuition right? It would be like a 3k deposit once admitted today.

Hartins or LbB....can y'all confirm these numbers?

AN EVEN BETTER READ, .. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS

Oct 17, 2014, 10:30 PM

I looked at the site that was mentioned of all books, and this is from the first football team. It's a little long, but makes you proud to be a Tiger today! If the guy that wrote this could only see how things are today (it's almost like he could see the future!)

...But a football team like everything else in this world worth anything, costs. The "sinews of war" must be provided. The glory of the foot-ball team's victories are the common property of every cadet at Clemson.

If the Inter-Collegiate contests are for the sole gratification of the eleven engaged in the contest, then away with the game. It costs too much time, too much money, too much privation; it is not worthwhile. But if every trip taken, every game played, establishes more firmly in the public's mind Clemson's claim to be a community of gentlemen; if every victory won is a source of gratification and pride to students, faculty and alumni alike, ... if all these things added go to make college life more enjoyable to the participants, more attractive to outsiders desiring an education, go to advertise the college, and last but not least, go to make better men physically, morally and mentally of those students who actively participate in the sport, then we say long live football, the greatest man-making [yea, they said 'man-making'] college-spirit-creating, game to-day on the American continent.

We hope the day will never come when Clemson College will be without a football team, for that day will also find less contentment among its students, less loyalty and college spirit and less pupils.
