Incoming portal players

2

Sep 25, 2023, 11:59 AM

Teams with the most incoming portal players
#1 Colorado had 48 incoming portal players (the most of any school) and got its butt absolutely handed to them by Oregon Saturday.
#2 Arizona State has only won 1 game this year (against a total nobody).
#3 SMU is 2-2 with wins over a couple of high school level teams. Texas State is #4 and is at 2&2 with no wins of consequence.
#5 Indiana U is 2-2 with wins over powerhouses like Akron and Indiana State.
#6 Lousiville is a reputable football school..is the first one on the list with a winning record, but they have yet to play a ranked team.
#7 is the heralded SEC team of the Auburn Tigers...they are unranked and just lost to unranked Texas A&M
We could go on.
Then we could look at DJU...aka Oregon State that finally played a ranked team and lost.

I think the portal is not all that it is cracked up to be. It is not necessarily going to make a great program greater and isn't really going to help a lower program that much. It basically recirculates players who were not doing that well, to begin with with a few exceptions...but they are just that exceptions. The Radler and Caleb Williams transfers are pretty rare.

It’s funny how you twist and spin this. For example

#1 Colorado Won one game last season and 9 total the last 3 seasons is 3-1 with only loss to top 10 Oregon

Also, Louisville isn't exactly a football school.

So what's your point? I could easily spin it the other way. Are you in favor or not? If not, why not? If so, why?

My point is that it is not the panacea that some want to believe.

I'm not opposed to us filling positions of need with 3-4 portal players per year. I think it's foolish not to. But as a tool to build a program, I agree 100% with you. It's not.

Great post and the right way to think about it. From a players perspective, if they lose out on a starting position or something happens with their family where they need to change schools, gives them the flexibility to do so. From a program perspective, if you have a major injury or someone leave for NFL, you can plug holes. Of course, it’s just a bidding war now but not why it was setup the way it is.

How the portal is used matters...

If you use it to throw favor schollies to a coaching legend's great grandson's nephew's uncle's child to come in a never see the field of play...............it's not going to benefit your team AT ALL.

If you make a concerted full court press effort to utilize the portal as a true TALENT RESOURCE to impact your team with real gamechanging "upgrades" then your team benefits.

Colorado has tripled their wins already from last year.........their talent was scum level last year.

Spencer Rattler has made South Carolina better and has accounted for wins that they wouldn't have had by having their secondary option at QB. They don't beat us without him last year.

FSU DOES NOT BEAT CLEMSON if you take away their portal players.

IT'S PART OF THE GAME NOW........it's an extension of recruiting............gotta utilize it.

Clemson doesn't need to use it to the extent that Colorado or even FSU used it, but 2-3 gamechangers would've made a massive difference this year.

Yep, think Duke had some nice Portal players and Tennessee is full of transfers too. Last year's QB was from va tech.

I think if you lose 3-4 players to the portal you need to pick up the same number. If you don't roster management will be an issue.

At one time the forward pass was illegal in football. Can you imagine a coach saying "no, Im going to win by just running on every play?". "The pass will ruin football "

Hopefully our strategy of not using the portal will win over recruits in the future. Essentially the promise we are making to recruits is: "we have evaluated you, vetted you, and want you to be a part of our program; we will not go shop the portal to try and find someone to replace you." Afterall, players in the portal either turned us down before or weren't on our radar to begin with... We have been getting lots of exposure nationally for not using the portal... hopefully some four and five stars who value loyalty and buy-in are listening...

How do you account for FSUs 20 portals over 2 years that certainly upgraded them. They bought good ones from other teams.
