as his routine.

No in that this is now the national media tagline for Clemson. That we are a closed door to the transfer portal options. That isn't true as Dabo has never said he's opposed to using the portal when necessary. But no one reports that and so potential transfer players i don't think give us a sniff.

Unfortunately i think championships are dictated by free agent pickups. The landscape is chaotic and different now. At some point Dabo will make a splash addition in the portal but he's not the type to totally revamp his lineup every season like FSU or some of the SEC schools. But there's no doubt about it, transfers are huge factors now. FSU wouldn't have been much without their transfer portal additions. Scar would still be in their losing streak to us without the portal. Transfers like Burrow and Fields totally changed some of our fortunes as well even prior to the modern portal hop trend. But it set up the perception that transfers can change your team overnight.

Clemson's hasn't changed much in terms of starters and transfers. Which is refreshing to an extent but unfortunately these teams like UGA, Bama, OSU are all paying big for the portal free agents and I think that will dictate who wins the big game going forward. It really stinks that its turning sour like that but until they figure a way to throw the brakes on it, it'll keep stinking.

I agree with you that NIL & the portal have drastically changed the landscape of college football - and generally for the worse. But it's not like Clemson isn't heavy into NIL. According to this link, Clemson is 9th nationally, and top in the ACC, in NIL Collective funding. Are these numbers wrong?

I agree with 90% of that. NIL has nothing to do with the university. At all. The university cannot pay a player at all. Well, a stipend. But, NIL are a mandated to be private entities completely separate from the University. For example, Texas isn’t paying their lineman $100k plus a year. Nor can they. They can’t even bring the NIL collective on campus to broker a deal. The university can make recommendations. They can even setup a meeting off campus but can’t be present during the deal or negotiating. However, teams are making promises of X amount to recruits. Which is against NIL rules. Part of the collective comes from private donations from boosters. Most of the money comes from particular product sponsorship. Like Nike wants to pay John Stud $1 mil a year to use their NIL to sell Nike products. There has to be some real interest from particular companies unless the boosters donate millions to a generic fund to be decided by the collective. That school CANNOT promise or make direct payment to the students. The students and NIL collectives must report any deals to the University and the NCAA. No coach has veto power over any deal the student makes.

Everyone seems to think it’s this magical fund that the haves can just throw money at players. That has happened and those caught have paid the price. More guidance and guidelines are coming.

Transfers have helped plenty of teams go from contenders to champions

the portal is about 2 years old so if you're specifically only talking about it then just give it a second. Teams are jockeying every year for QBs and RBs to update their rosters through free agency. Some of these teams only need that one player to bring it all together. IF we had a trevor or deshaun on that kelly bryant team i'm pretty sure we'd have another championship. FSU took an ACC championship away with free agency this year. They added starting defense and offense talent that ended up being the difference in our game. I'm not saying i like the trend at all but its going to have alot to do with CFP teams on a year to year basis. Scar won that game only because of Rattler. Had Perry Orth or whatever other scrub they had over there had played we'd have won easily with our C game. But Rattler had a little extra in the tank that day. And no the streak has to start over in my opinion. I think we could have rattled off 15 in a row without giving them a life raft in the portal. We're obviously better but i wanted to see how big that thing could have gotten.

So people are throwing Dabo who is a proven winner under the bus because He did not recruit an entire team from the transfer portal.
Yet there is only 2 years to base that off from and two years when the portal did not win the Championship and isn’t that what all the portal me first fans and players want every year.
The portal and nil as currently constructed is the ruin of college athletics!

The only team that has won a championship with a portal/transfer built team is LSU. The only other teams to build portal teams and have national success was TCU and FSU. All 3 have something in common. They were all one and done. FSU had one season of ten wins after a 4-4 start and then had their season last year. FSU may win 9/10 this year (I think 8/9 at most) but they won't sniff the playoffs or a championship unless they get very lucky in the ACC Championship game. I for one believe Clemson will play NC State twice for the ACC Championship this year. Dabo Swinney has made it plain he will not recruit a player who is searching for the money thru NIL. He makes offers in the portal to some he thinks fits the Clemson way of life and they don't consider Clemson because of they won't bid for them. Dabo Swinney has been consistent in telling recruits if you are looking at Clemson for NIL you should probably go somewhere else. The NIL Collectives for Clemson is geared for the players already on the roster. The recruits are told this during the recruiting process. The idea that Clemson will offer a portal player anything more than they offer a high school recruit has been squashed by Dabo Swinney. This will not change and this has nothing to do with Clemson losing football games. Injuries and Turnovers are the direct root cause of Clemson's losses 2021-2023. Healthy Clemson would probably have won the ACC 21/23 both!

Now that I think about it, with all of the other options for sports, I would say that ESPN has probably fallen far more than Clemson/Dabo has. Their programming has turned to trash compared to their glory days. No doubt that the transfer portal has changed the game, but it just highlights the difference between those who can coach, and those who know how to shop around. There needs to be better limits and governance on the NIL and the portal as they have made the game of college football cringe worthy in my book. Imagine transferring for a NIL payout, getting the payout, then transferring back to the original team. Make that make sense for the coaches and the fans. It makes tons of sense for a selfish individual, but not a team.

Well as long as i'm "F U'ing" people today, which I did to Jim Phillips and the ACC network for not putting us on tv Saturday, here is a HUGE "F U" to Harry Lyles, jr.

Dear Harry, what makes you qualified to pass judgement on anyone, but especially about football? You have never done anything, never won anything, Has absolutely ZERO background in Football. He's a failed Basketball player that couldn't make it in the league at 5'8" and has "little man syndrome"! How about accomplish something, anything in your miserable excuse for a bland, uneventful, meaningless existence before you go bashing someone who has literally built a perineal powerhouse and Championship contender from the ground up! The only thing you are right about is that Swinney shouldn't be sitting at number 4. With Saban gone, Swinney should be 1 or 2 with Smart. Anybody else active got 2 titles? So in short, Harry Lyles is a complete moron, and has no place ever commenting on anything football related! so again, F U Harry!

- Streeter as OC, Austin as OLC, Grisham as WR coach - all garbage.
- multiple misses at every RB offer for years
- multiple misses at OL offers for years
- multiple misses at WR recruiting
- multiple misses at WR development
- a beatdown from Tennessee in a bowl game
- a loss to garbage-ass USC at home.
- 2x consecutive losses to NCSU
- a beatdown from Duke
- choked against FSU last season

Above all, I don't believe Sweeney would have have canned any of his coaches if not for massive pressure from donors. I understand his resistance to the portal (I agree with that personally) but "some" kids are more concerned with cash payments than any education or development.....if you want them, pay them. If you don't want to be a pay-to-play school, you #### sure better have coaches that offer development like no other.

Old Billy Boy has to write about something. Time will tell. I still think it's about recruiting, developing, and game execution. FSU benefited from the portal, until everybody left, and then they were humiliated by the cheaters from Athens. Meeeechigan benefited from the portal and then benefited some more when everybody turned the other way on their cheating. Colorado was celebrated as a great example in portal use until they demonstrated that they couldn't stop a fly. The Aggies under wittle Jimbo spent all sorts of money on players and still stunk. Even Saint Nicky couldn't deal with all the nonsense. And how about all the slugs stuck in the portal, probably for the rest of their lives? Yep, that portal really is wonderful.

Dabo? He'll use it if necessary. I think he's doing it the right way, regardless of what some say.

The ACC had very few representatives yet still dominate the win columns. We have won 40% of the last ten championships. We’ve had more elite 8’s, final fours, and championships than any other conference. Tell the lie enough and the lame stream media believes it.

As far as the portal, Dabo doesn’t offer 1% of the kids the average school does. It’s shown in the results too. There has been a rash of small college players transfer and become a top 20 draft prospect. Dabo refuses to offer a one and done player. That mindset is out dated. I hope he changes and follows the trends. Although, he’s going to do it his way. He’s earned the right.

NIL is a complete mess. Dabo has zero control over who can get what. No school can pay a player NIL money. That’s a separate entity and by law must remain so. Dabo can’t veto a NIL deal. He can’t promise a recruit NIL money (legally). Again, the schools CANNOT pay players. It’s more companies that want to use a players NIL to sell a product. It’s just an endorsement deal. But they ranked him top-4 of all time, too

Seems like we're trying to devalue ESPN more than ESPN is trying to devalue Coach Swinney & Clemson by ranking him 4th is all, I dunno.

Earlier this week another ESPN analyst had Coach Swinney in the top-four of all time but oddly nobody seemed to celebrate or even notice (it was a fun read, though, for what it's worth, good logic even).

NIL is legal, however, just to be clear; pay-for-play isn't the same thing & that may likely change, however absolutely players can get paid for their name, image & likeness, including players at the university with the first-ever NIL & Branding Institute, the first-ever nationwide NIL commercial & more.

It's all part of the global conspiracy against Clemson. Part of Dabo's schtick has been to sell that to the fanbase and they eat it up.

I usually stop reading because they don’t know what they are talking about. I guess it’s time to remind everyone who the first college player we remember seeing in a commercial for a national brand was. Give you a hint - he was a Clemson QB on a Dr. Pepper commercial. We’ve been in this from the start.

Who are pushing their favorite product. They are all parrots, repeating each other’s criticisms of Dabo and the portal bc they suck at being sports analysts. Everyone has to do it the same way?

I get that Clemson has not been top 10 for three years, but let’s not make the era too small to include a future hall of fame coach in the top 5.

Kalaen Deboer? Lol, one trip to the playoffs, hired at Bama, now he’s one of the best, ahead of Dabo?

Top 3 recruiting class coming up and Dabo has lost it?

LOL, if you don't think these idiots are toeing the company line by devaluating

Considering that only two coaches listed are relevant, I wouldn't throw too much shade at Dabo Swinney. I can understand why Smart is at the top because he had two back-to-back national titles and had he not been robbed, would have had a possible three-peat. However, to discredit Dabo because he refuses to exploit the immaturity in young men barely finished with high school and bribe players with NIL deals does not mean that he isn't a Top 10 Coach. Now I'm pissed off! I SO HOPE AND PRAY THAT CLEMSON WINS IT ALL FOR THE NEXT 4 - 5 YEARS WITHOUT TAKING A SINGLE TRANSFER FROM THE PORTAL OR OFFERING EVEN ONE MORE NIL AGREEMENT.

I revel in the fact that Little Ole Clemson hired a WR Coach to be the head coach and has accomplished the following:

6 Straight Playoff appearances

2 national championships

98% or higher graduation rate

Top 3 in number of players active in the NFL

AT CLEMSON WE ARE NOT THE SEC BUT IT DOES MEAN MORE! WE DO MORE WITH LESS! GET THE HECK OUTTA HERE WITH THAT NONSENSE.

GO TIGERS! BEST IS THE STANDARD... BEST IS CLEMSON TIGER FOOTBALL!

Seems a little bit sensitive. I mean the TNet article was a critique of a review of the original article, so it's a couple degrees removed to start with. And the original article was pretty clear there was no specific criteria for their rankings. Whether or not Dabo can get Clemson back to the CFP/Top 10 was a common storyline the last two seasons.

But no one stays on top forever, and the hard reality is that there are relatively few second acts in college coaching. Maybe Dabo can do it, maybe he can't. Everyone is optimistic before the season, and maybe the changes Dabo made will show that significant improvement. How can anyone know for sure? Any opinion one way or the other is just speculation at this point - for fans and writers alike.

In time, Dabo gonna prove he is doing it successfully, and the right way.***

Can't wait till that day happens, hopefully it's real real soon.Looking forward to the NCAA and whoever else came up with all these changes to be made complete fool of and Dabo Swinney being the one and only one making a fool out of them.

One word. WHO?????

Mind you no Dabo is not a play caller. He is a CEO coach that I would not trade for anyone. If Dabo would have been at Clemson 10 years earlier as HC, we would have a few more Natty’s. The NIL and Clemson’s /our cash flow to pay NIL has hurt Dabo some.

We did not lose to FSU because they had portal players. We lost to fsu because we ran a stupid screen pass on the goal line and missed a chip shot field goal.
We wizzed down our own leg to send that game to OT.

Well when we remind the coots that their 5 year run on us was the past we aren’t wrong. Past don’t mean a dang thing unless it was last year. Same applies to us, it’s time to win some ball games and take back the ACC! A CFP appearance would go along way too!

Gotta consider the source. ESPN is an absolute clown show right now. If you ain't in the SEC they think you suck. No way in #### new Bama coach is better than Dabo. He is only ranked because he is now at Bama

ESPN is just doing and saying whatever they can for ratings and $$. As Dabo once said, don’t worry about criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from. It will make you a lot happier in life.
