General question ... Does this bother anybody else?

For background, I went to Clemson and Georgia. I'm one of the few that pulls hard for both teams. So I will go to any Clemson or Georgia game and enjoy being there. ... But here's the question: I live in West Virginia, two miles from the Ohio border. I went to the Marshall-Ohio U. game Saturday night. It was a good, close game, but what was troubling were the long, long momentum-killing tv timeouts. Five to seven minutes every time. Several times the timeouts. It was ridiculous. The game lasted almost four hours. Since I don't see Clemson as often as I used to, is this happening in Death Valley? Do Clemson's drives get killed this way?

We move too fast to let them have TV timeouts.....

but seriously, the sport where I notice this most is NASCAR. It is the one main reason out of several why I no longer keep up or watch it. They take TV breaks literally every 8 to 10 laps.

The TV timeouts are so long because they now run 6 different commercials. It used to be 1 or 2 not many years ago. Yes I agree, NASCAR is the worst.

natural breaks between innings (or pitching substitutions) that last 3-4 minutes, perfect for commercial breaks. Baseball has never had to resort to TV-timeouts.
Good when you attend the games too, for bathroom/concession breaks.

A pro game is awful. More down time than actual game. The networks love it, as do the stadium vendors, but I have never enjoyed going to a professional football game.

in the NFL, they have a TV timeout after a score

then they comeback, have a kickoff.....then ANOTHER TV timeout.
Those are hideous. I don't think college ball has those (yet).

You're right, and it's stupid. If you got a kicker that's definitely going to kick it out of the end zone, you can go to Subway and get a sandwich from the time one drive ends and the next drive start.

This (5-7 minute length) is actually why I posted. I had never seen tv timeouts lasting so long. The group where I was sitting started timing them, from the moment the TO was called to the time the ball was whistled back into play.

They take the same breaks but evidence shows that...

giving our coaching staff time to regroup doesn't work well for our opponents. Looks to me like those who've pulled the fake injuries could have seen that by now. If you keep doing the same thing and expect different outcomes each time what does that make you?
After a fake or a long TV timeout we always come out throwing fast and late breaking curveballs.

Every TV game has same length time outs
Sep 17, 2013, 10:20 AM

The number of TV timeouts will vary based on game situations, but ALL network and regional games take the same length timeout. It's 3.5 or 2.5 minutes for a TV timeout (depending on the game situation) and :60 for a 30 second timeout - which they rarely cutaway for these). Advertisers are guaranteed a certain number of breaks per game. Once that # is met, you sometimes see networks "staying with the action" and not cutting away as often. That's why there are typically more breaks in the first half than in the second half of a football game. But no network, team or conference controls the length of a break. It's a TV industry standard that stays constant. Same as for any TV show. All commercial breaks are same length at either 3.5 or 2.5 minutes.
