and still gave up an average of only 22 points last year. Also their beating by OSU can also be attritubted to eh offense throwing picks that were returned for TD or put the D in a horrible position, also the fact that OSu should have been playing for a NC

In 2011 Venables took OU into Tallahassee and only gave up 13 points in a game that FSU put everything they had into. The next week FSU comes to Clemson with a ton of injuries on offense and a QB that had never started a game and puts up 30 points on Steele's defense. Venables looks like a big upgrade to me.

Our pass defense was horrible through the middle and end of the year. Texas Tech really exposed how weak our secondary was.

yeah...it was the offenses fault that RGIII threw over 400 yards and the Texas Tech's QB throwing over 400 yards.

How many ESPN folks do you ever hear praise anyone that wasn't in the ESECPN group. If BV would have been a DC for any team in the SEC. He would have been in high praises with Pollack. What teams in the SEC run the spread hurry up offence. Relax, BV will do a good job for us. Other on lookers have already seen a big difference in our D. And everything they have said was for the good....

They might have slipped a little but they are a national title contender year in and year out. Do you really want to talk about who has been owned in a BCS bowl?

Dude as Clemson fans we have no grounds to talk down to Oklahoma's program. I don't really like the Sooners and I'm definitely not a Stoops fan, but they're one of the Top 5-6 programs in the country, no doubt. We should hope to god we can someday get to the level of Oklahoma as a program.

DP's reporting was somewhat suspect. I think his cheat sheet was off a little. We almost lost the NC game? I think I remember seeing the 3rd string in that game. The Chad's offense shredded them. And the Heels played the pro-style offense that KS could just smash.
Just sayin,. Fun to read, didn't put a lot of stock in it.
Go Tigers!

We were in a slugfest with UNC?

I remember us laying 35 points on them in the 3rd quarter and then using back ups for the entire 4th. I didn't see a slugfest, I saw a curb stomping in the third and cruise control in the fouth. he's right about Steele and Venables.

EXACTLY! I am so tired of people bringing up the UNC game to say our defense sucked. Yes our defense was horrid at times last year but not in the UNC Game. Our starting D only gave up 17 points, and they scored 14 points. That's only a net of giving up 3 points for the starting D.
The backup D gave up 14 in their short time frame, but the offense fumbled on the 10 or so I believe for one of those TD's.
Either way I agreed with Dabo putting in the bench there. No reason to keep the starters in just so it looks like more of a blowout on the scoreboard. Too much risk of injury + the guys on the bench deserve a chance to play.

Boyd made some terrible throws, UNC had some key dropped passes.
That blowout lulled us into getting complacent, and it caught up with us soon after

It was 24-17 at the half tho. Before we went on that insane scoring run I was a little worried about it. Obviously we blew their doors off after the half, but he wasn't exactly wrong by saying "flirting"....flirting can also be being led on before having your heart ripped out and left on the sidewalk haha.

A fair and honest assessment, IMO
Apr 24, 2012, 11:45 AM
|
|
- Watching the Spring game, you can learn "some" things, but you can never draw absolute conclusions, overall (other than we are absolutely stocked at WR).
- It's good, I think, to get an opine from someone like David Pollack. His perspective, on multiple levels, has more value than so many of the other ESPN "talking heads".
- Our OL and Tahj's consistency are going to be key to how good this offense can be. We really do need to be able to run the ball well between the tackles and in the red zone.
- On D, depth along the DL and at DE is going to be key to just how good this D will be, ultimately. Grady Jarrett was a beast in the Spring game...and Meeks was all over the place in the secondary. BV's already got the LB's improving...
- I'm optimistic about 2012 - and beyond. Seems like we are increasing our talent/depth on a level that most Clemson fans expect.

We are definitely not elite and have a lot of work to do. We haven't recruited that well in the trenches and it shows. Defense has to re-establish our Clemson traditions of tough hard nosed dee. Need to get some elite defensive linemen bad. We'll wait and see how BV does. He is a likeable guy and says the right things. Hopefully he can stabilize the defense and let our playmakers make plays.

Pollock is good. Very honest in his assessments. Thinks highly of Clemson. He was praising us last year until the end. Tom Luginbill is the same. Always high on Clemson, wants us to do well and then we dissapoint. Not everyone at ESPN is out to get us. We need to quit losing to teams we should run over.
