Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

To be clear, we should expand Medicare to be the health insurance system rather than just for the old folks. With the new system in place, there will be something to account for non-citizen residents, which would work similarly to how other countries function when I visit there and need medical attention.

The program isn't a "let's make sure the illegals are covered" program. But they would benefit from it, ultimately, as would we because right now they are eating up ER costs due to the lack of regular access for preventative care.

Absolutely. We need to have co-pays and/or deductibles, for instance. This is legislation that would need careful attention, and fortunately we already have Medicare so we know something about what has worked and what hasn't.

You mentioned copays and deductibles. My question is where do we draw the line on insuring illegals? Surely you can’t be saying we insure everyone who walks across our border? I can’t even begin to understand that.

Let's start with the easier cases: people who are here on vacation or on a work visa. They could be required to have their own insurance, or some amount of the public system could be made available to them. I would look to how other countries handle different types of situations and see how it's worked or not worked.

insurance in the country?? In other words no private health insurance and the entire medical care system is to be funded by the Federal Government. In other words - Medicare for all??

Just checking because in order to do that, the Government will be instituting price controls (goodbye "free market") to include the salaries of the healthcare providers themselves. Not sure how many current doctors in the USA are gonna like being forced to take a 40% or more pay cut...

There are many other problems/issues with a Government run/funded healthcare system but the significant cut in healthcare provider pay required to make any such Government funded system close to affordable is an issue that is rarely discussed.

Just for reference - US healthcare providers are among the highest paid in the world:

The average physician earnings were ranked as follows:

United States – $316,000
Germany – $183,000
United Kingdom – $138,000
France – $98,000
Italy – $70,000
Spain – $57,000
Brazil – $47,000
Mexico – $12,000

The average physician net worth (sum of all assets minus debts) was ranked as follows:

United States – $1,742,000
United Kingdom – $657,000
Germany – $441,000
France – $425,000
Italy – $269,000
Spain – $228,000
Brazil – $95,000
Mexico – $67,000

Source: https://www.physiciansweekly.com/how-do-us-physician-salaries-compare-with-those-abroad/

Notice all of these countries other than the USA have Government provided healthcare (UK, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil) or are very heavily regulated (Germany).

In answer to your questions: Yes. Thank you for the additional information. That's an important concern and has to play a role in deliberations. However, I would not conclude that the US has higher salaries due to the private insurance companies. But it's important to see how medical professionals would be impacted.

Then you must hate America bc we aren’t socialists/communists. Hard to believe an American could support something so commie. To each their own though.

This is America dude. We want private healthcare.

I just said I don't, and my vote counts for as much as yours, and plenty of Americans agree with me, so you're wrong that "we" want private healthcare. And anyway, you like socialized medicine, too. Or do you want to repeal Medicare and Medicaid?

Everything the federal government touches turns to crap.

Demonstrably false.

So you are cool with open borders, mandatory gun buy back, sex offenders voting and banning offshore drilling?

Stay on topic!

In the United States, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), a subdivision of the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), is responsible for providing all forms of health care to veterans. As of 2022, just over 11 million people in the United States were insured by some form of military heath care.

Availability / access to timely healthcare keeps getting overlooked

Jul 25, 2024, 11:38 PM [ in reply to Just to be clear - You want Government funded healthcare to be the only ]

Universal health care providing countries often struggle with poor access (as far as timeliness is concerned) for healthcare for the large majority of the population.

Doctors don’t like the reimbursement constraints forced upon them by Obamacare and Medicare. Not surprisingly, the practices of “concierge” and “DPC” medical services, which provide doctors with reimbursement workarounds (I.e., paid more fairly for their services) have been increasing.

Patients are almost always on the hook for paying higher costs for concierge doctors. Why are these patients OK with paying more? Accessibility. Guess which wanna be patients are experiencing accessibility problems? Those who are still going to ‘traditional payee’ doctors.

(*). Well intended Americans who want to see all people in America have access to cheap, readily available, highest quality healthcare are, quite frankly, poorly informed people who are charitable with the labors & skills of others (I.e., the doctors who must manage their practices, pay their staff & nurses, pay the high tab for IT services (necessary for handling the complexities of Obamacare and Medicare), liability insurance, and the financing costs for their buildings and (often extremely) expensive equipment.

What is the destination for Americans expecting to or feeling entitled to low cost / high quality healthcare? Inadequate access.

Remember the old axiom: If you want to see a service go away, then all you have to do is not pay for it.
