Hope to see Cade wuth the starters on offense

I’d be nice to see an apples to apples comparison.

DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc?

Sep 6, 2022, 3:02 AM

“DJ has been an unbelievable leader on his team. He's done a great job of earning the right to be the starter,” Streeter said. “The way he practices, the way he carries himself, the way he got through this and just finds a way. So I think it's very important to understand that. And our program is built around earning.

Those attributes seem kinda nebulous. By all accounts, Cade also practices well carries himself well, and is a great leader.

I would have thought the QB would "earn the right" by being better able to read defenses, react quickly, go through progressions, be consistently accurate, be elusive, be a good runner, have better pocket-presence, throw with anticipation and touch, etc. From what we've seen of DJ & Cade, DJ is mediocre, and Cade wins on these more measurable, critical job-requirements.

Re: DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc?

Sep 6, 2022, 9:07 AM

And you base this off one series by Cade and the entire game by DJ.

You also are basing this off Cade playing against their scrubs.

But you keep trying hard and you will be a color guy on the radio or tv soon.

Re: DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc?

Sep 6, 2022, 9:16 AM

Bro, there is DJ's entire last season long body of work. Scrubs? That was not an all-world defense DJ struggled with. Plus DJ had the first team offense. Cade made 2nd and 3rd team receivers look good. We can ill afford for DJ to take the first two quarters to find his groove. Nobody wants him to succeed more than me. There is no denying, we are not seeing a significantly improved DJU. Just a lighter one.

Sep 6, 2022, 11:14 AM [ in reply to Re: DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc? ]

DJ was a a five star recruit and supposedly he should be “good”. I think we have give him enough time and patience to be a five start recruit. DJ’s move is just not natural. The fake run lacks rhythm. He may be ok if Clemson just a second tier team. But we are not (at least we hope we are not). Last night’s game proves Cade is the one who may bring us back to the top. DJ led offense won’t make us survive Georgia, Bama… for sure

Re: DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc?

Sep 6, 2022, 12:27 PM [ in reply to Re: DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc? ]

No. I'm basing it off of everything we've seen of DJ since last year and everything we've seen of Klubnik since he arrived. DJ is what he is. He STILL stares down and locks into one receiver while failing to see or hit other open receivers. He's slow. He doesn't have good pocket-presences. He's not elusive. He throws some beautiful balls and some stinkers.

Klubnik has looked sharp since he arrived. He's deadly accurate and mobile. He can look and pump fake in one direction, and then come back and find & hit a different receiver. Against GT he played with the 4th string walk-on RB, 2nd string line, and 2nd-4th string receivers like Drew Swinney, yet he made them look great, albeit against GT's 2nd string.

Anyway, my point was that the reasons that Streeter gave for DJ being a starter are very odd, relative to the job qualifications. You didn't address my point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc?

Sep 6, 2022, 2:16 PM

This was not Streeters call, the starter was called for him. He’s just following orders. A former QB knows the deal.

2024 white level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Streeter's reasons sound like 2014 Morris's for Stoudt

Sep 6, 2022, 7:53 PM

I remember reporters asking Chad Morris why he didn't start Deshaun Watson over Cole Stoudt (even though Watson looked superior when on the field). Morris said something like, "Coach said Cole waited for his turn, and he could have left the program, but he loves Clemson, and he's a good leader, etc." It sounded like Chad was unhappily following orders. Deja vu.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mentioned this last week. It's called "faint praise"...

Sep 6, 2022, 12:48 PM [ in reply to DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc? ]

and it isn't a good thing.

Dabo needs DJ to hold it together long enough for Cade to get enough experience.

The inevitable will happen soon.

Re: DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc?

Sep 6, 2022, 2:21 PM [ in reply to DJ earned the right by the way he "carries himself", etc? ]

My thoughts exactly. Every other position has no guarantees. Dabo says every spot is open and is competed for. Except qb. It has puzzled me throughout Dabo’s tenure. We all know Watson should have started over Stoudt. Perhaps that Georgia loss is a w along with the FSU game. Lawrence should have never had to sit behind Bryant. Coach Swinney kept saying these guys earned the right to be out there ahead of better talent because they waited?! I’m not buying that. I like DJ as a person. As a qb, he is painful to watch. Like watching a bad movie for the third time. SMH

I’m telling you…..

Sep 6, 2022, 3:25 AM

I was soooo frustrated trying to watch DJ move the ball and work our Offense.
It is still difficult for me to watch him play as hard as I was pulling for him to succeed. He just doesn’t look smooth, appears uncomfortable/ uncertain on decision making and stiff as a statue when dropping back or trying to run with the ball. He is slow with zero rhythm, zero moves and just painful to watch. I just don’t see much improvement from last year …..no need to sugar coat it….that’s what I saw.
When Cade came in….it was simply overwhelming how smooth, crisp and quick he looked. It reminded me so very much of Deshawn Watson. He is fast, accurate and full of confidence and man o man did that Offense click with him in there…..and that’s with him coming in cold off the bench!!!!!
I wish DJ all the best but Cade should be the Starter and Hunter Johnson the backup and DJ third string…..AND that’s the way I see it….
Go Tigers!!!?????

Re: I’m telling you…..

Sep 6, 2022, 6:15 AM

DJ is definitely improved. He completed passes. He ran well. He didn't do well in the first quarter but he pulled himself together in the second quarter. All behind 2/3rds of an offensive line and with some drops.

Cade looked good but he was also looking good against the second string with the game in hand. It's just different. Particularly since he was throwing into some tight windows that the first string defense might make you pay for.

Everybody needs to get better but there's time and reason to believe.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’m telling you…..

Sep 6, 2022, 9:22 AM

You say that DJ didn't do well the first quarter that is a 15 minute period, but in playing time that's close to 45 minutes. On the other side of this, did you see our true freshman come in, and in a few minutes he throws a TD on what look like the same play that DW4 won us a NC. He was quick and crisp, and two of his passes was to freshman Swinney, and the TD pass was to Will Taylor. The kid completes passes to people that was about as cold as he was coming in the game, and it all happen in just a short time without any hesitation!!!!

Adam Randall was the star of pre-season

Sep 6, 2022, 11:21 AM

Who threw to him exclusively on the second team? Cade Klubnik.

Based on one game and one drive, Cade looked very good. DJ looked very similar to last year. We'll see how the next few games go, but I am very encouraged with what I saw from Cade. Kelly B got us to the playoffs his first year and probably would have done it again, but he couldn't do what Trevor did. Dabo might have another tough decision to make in a few weeks. The future looks bright.

The right tackle is a freshman and it showed. Made it difficult to sustain drives. It effected both running and passing game. I am sure they will get it fixed, have faith that this is what they do for a living. Not a side job.

Sep 6, 2022, 7:42 AM [ in reply to I’m telling you….. ]

Anyone can see the huge difference. They look like 2 completely different teams on offense. Every team we play seems to have a better QB than DJ. If they give Cade enough experience early, then we have a chance to be special when it really matters. We don’t stand a chance in the playoffs with DJ even though he is “slightly” improved. The guy is so slow and hard to watch. A speedy accurate QB just opens things up.

Re: .. CLUBNICk

Sep 6, 2022, 8:50 AM

You knew beforehand that there was no way DJ wasn't the starter for an away conference game. There was a definite improvement over last year, even though he didn't look as crisp as we wanted and the offensive line didn't exactly help him in the first half. He led the offense to 34 points last night. Last year Clemson only scored over 30 three times and 2 of those were Conn and SC State. There is no doubt that Klubnick looked great in the one drive he played, but that was just one drive. Dabo is loyal, and unless he is seeing a huge separation in practice or games, he's going to go with the guy who has been with the team and put in the work over the years. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone and I think Dabo has proven over the years that he has the process covered.

We still got the big win over Tech. Now we'll get to see a bigger mix of the 2 over the next couple of weeks and I think it will show up who's playing best. I think at minimum Klubnick will be sharing drives with DJ by the Wake game (DJ will "start" due to it being a ranked opponent on the road) just like Dabo did with Trevor to work him into the lineup. Wake and NC State are most likely the conference. Two huge games in a row. By then I think we'll know who the right QB is for the job.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: .. CLUBNICk

Sep 6, 2022, 12:49 PM

It's true that DJ led the team for 34 points, but 14 of those were from VERY short-field blocked punts. DJ also fumbled and and bobbled catchable snaps.

Dabo is loyal and he loves his hard-working QBs. So, yes, it's no surprise that Dabo started DJ or that Dabo will stick with DJ possibly until is costs us a loss-- like he did with Stoudt-Watson, at FSU where we lost a game that went into OT, in part because Stoudt threw a woulda-been gimme rollout TD (for Leggett in the end zone) into the dirt. (Very similar throw that DW4 threw to Renfrow to clinch the 2016 natty.)

If your OL can't pass-protect, then a great solution is to have a mobile QB who can throw from outside the pocket. That seems like Klubnik's forte, but not DJ's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: .. CLUBNICk

Sep 6, 2022, 2:56 PM [ in reply to Re: .. CLUBNICk ]

He did not lead the offense to 34 points. Two blocked punts led to 14 of those points. Without those 2 blocked punts and the TD led by Cade, we win 20-10. It is a little better than last year, though.

DJ looked left and never waivered when to the right the TE came wide a$$ open in the seam. I know Deshaun, Trevor and perhaps CK2 would have threaded the ball into the gap.

Ugh. I, like a lot of other die hard fans, did see some improvements with DJ, he just didn't sell "best player for the job" to me. Dabo keeps saying they are trying to instill confidence in him...how much confidence can you give before you realize it just isn't working. I think DJ should hit the portal and try in a less "pressure" school. Cade played one drive, effortlessly, and scored. The new kid IS nipping at DJ's heels and should be played more. It's time for Clemson to stop blowing sunshine up DJ's butt.

The coaches need to stop saying that the receivers had some drops. Yea. Of course not ever catch gets made. But stop blaming the receivers for what DJ can’t get done. He’s clearly terrified to throw into coverage. If the receiver isn’t wide open by 5 yards he just won’t throw unless it’s to BC. We’re not going to be WRU for long when the coaches are blaming them. Our entire second string looked smoother with CK than the first string did with DJ. I wish that weren’t true, but I saw what I saw.

Re: TNET: Streeter says Uiagalelei has earned starting spot, but Klubnik has earned right to play

Sep 6, 2022, 8:03 AM

DJ missed a couple of throws that should have been completed, like the roll out to Davis Allen. However, there were several balls that hit the receivers in the hands that were dropped. Our WRs in the past would've made those catches with no problems. Also, the O line was getting manhandled by Ga Tech (!?!?!) early and often. DJ looked to be improved to me, but he needs people around him to step up and help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Big / boundary WRs still can't catch contested balls

Sep 6, 2022, 9:46 AM

Our tall / boundary receivers can't yet reliably catch a contested pass.

Wide open, sure, they are better than last year. Covered tightly but the ball hits them on both hands, expect a drop.

Davis Allen catches contested balls; Jake Briningstool also catches them. Maybe Adam Randall will be the big WR that can do it.

It appears to me that DJ is fragile with confidence, and coaches have to be overboard with their praise to get any decent results out of him. IMHO, it's a losing battle, but apparently Clemson sports likes to give ourselves a handicap. Just look at Brownell's abysmal coaching/recruiting and his lifetime contract.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

“Didn’t skip a beat”? Yeah whatever. I think he meant to say,

Sep 6, 2022, 10:33 AM

“Got out of 4WD Low and put us into our usual overdrive”. No one is fooled. We’ve seen enough of what DJ can(‘t) do. Game after game after game of the same thing… lost in slow motion. Costed us another ACC title and probably a playoff slot last year. That wasn’t the best Tiger team ever but it was better than that, if we’d have just played a serviceable quarterback during the game and not in mop up duty; Taisun, Billy, Hunter, etc would’ve been acceptable.

DJ has indeed gotten a step faster and improved his mechanics a little and sped up his recognition but the latter only came through being in his 3rd year, and he needed to improve on all of those exponentially. He was still staring down receivers, half the time not going through his progressions, stubbornly throwing to his first target—whether open or not. If Cade still wasn’t ready, HJ would’ve been fine yesterday.

I expect CK to make frosh mistakes, especially in the first game; but at least it wouldn’t have been the majority of plays as we saw last night!

There is no comparison. You could even tell when CK was on the field everyone was amped bc they had confidence he could run the system and he could get the ball where it needed to be.

I have to guess the reason why our coaching staff is pretending DJ is clearly the starter is bc they are trying to keep CK under wraps until later in the season and it appears they are really concerned about hurting DJ’s confidence with a quick yank, but I think our options are better this year to not have to worry about that. It falls off behind CK, but we still have a few QBs that we recruited because of their ability to at least play at a decent level at Clemson or either our scouting is broken. If we continue to play DJ 95% of each game all season, expect results similar to last season. Plain and simple.

Not trying to compare him to DW4 or TL16 or other greats, but this is definitely a TL16/KB2 or DW4/CS18 situation. I can’t wait to see more of Cade in the coming games; what I saw for a minute or so on offense last night excites me for the prospects of this season, as we already knew our D was “solid”.

Re: TNET: Streeter says Uiagalelei has earned starting spot, but Klubnik has earned right to play

Sep 6, 2022, 11:17 AM

Amazing how different DJ was when he had some blocking. No question Cade is the real deal and looked smooth as silk but our O-line, hyped as it has been, AGAIN, remains a work in progress. We had only one option when we needed yards and that was over the left side. We should have dominated that group and yet we rushed for less than 150 yards! When they moved DJ around he looked very good on that one drive. The other thing is that our receivers as a group still have a long to go before they scare anyone. They rarely get separation and had enough drops on well-thrown balls, that would have changed the stat line for DJ dramatically. How many times have we seen a Watkins, a Hopkins, a Williams, a Ross or a Higgins make those back shoulder catches we missed last night? Talk about making the 50-50 catches, lets make the 70-30 catches first.

You all know how Dabo develops his QB's so just let it play out. Was there any doubt that DW and TL were not the best QB's on the team from day 1? Yet, they both were brought in slowly and you can't argue with the results. I agree, for now DJ has earned the right to start and we'll see what the season brings.
The one thing we can be pretty sure of is that we again have multiple folks who can play QB if and when needed.

Actually, Stoudt threw a gimme TD into the dirt at @FSU, which probably caused us to go to OT, where we lost, which cost us an Atlantic (and probably ACC) championship. So, I think one could reasonably argue with the results for that year's QB starter-decision. I think it was pretty clear prior to that game that DW4 was superior. Klubnik looks a lot like DW4 did back then.

Why not stop crying like a bunch of girls and let things play out? When Trevor Lawrence came along, it took a few games before he was named the starter and Klubnik may not be as far along in development as Lawrence, in fact, I know he’s not. Just let it play out. Your post is sexist, insulting, and poses a false choice.

It also took a few games for Dabo to switch from Stoudt to DW4, which probably caused us to lose @FSU (because Stoudt threw a gimme TD into the dirt) forcing us into OT, where we lost, which cost us the Atlantic Division (at least).

Dabo is either a good coach, or he’s an idiot, which is it?
You pose a ridiculously false choice. Dabo is a good coach. He's not an idiot. But he's human. He's not perfect. He's emotional & loyal, which seems to sometimes leads him to make bad decisions.

One thing that no one had mentioned in this thread or anywhere else is that DJU looks only to his right and throws there. Streeter knows this and that's why DJU started throwing the ball done to the left side in the second half. DJU looks timid and appears not to be able to throw across his body too the left side. Defensive coordinators have noticed and load up on the right side.
