I'm struggling to think of a more embarrassing moment as an American

than Donald Trump's recent comments regarding the Ukraine war.
I really think we will look back on this as one of the most shameful moments in our history. The day our President glibly sided with Russia over Europe and a victim of an unprovoked attack. It will be interesting (or sad) to see the ramifications. What else will Russia want over the next ten years. How will China interpret this?
Just for the "Oh well, it wasn't our problem anyway" crowd...okay...even if you believe that...that isolationism...THIS TIME...will work out well for us. The rhetoric. The glibness. The indifference to what is actually happening. The offhand "He should have made a deal". What a POS. I would be shocked if the Russians aren't behind closed doors laughing their backsides off about this man. That they were able to pull this off. Even an isolationist President could have pulled back support in a dignified way...in a way that acknowledges who is right and who is wrong. A way that respects the Ukrainian position. But not this guy. Trump has to take a #### on the lawn as he's walking away. Because...well, just because.
I can only hope that Europe increases their support of Ukraine, as recent reports state. Russia's economy is a ticking time bomb. Ukraine won't accept whatever nonsense surrender "compromise" comes out of the US-Russia talks. The war will probably continue. If Ukraine is victorious, it would serve us right if we were barred from whatever mineral rights come out of Ukraine. It would serve us right if Europe restructured a NATO alliance to focus on Europe without the US involvement. Heck, I can see that being done with Europe AND Canada, with the stated mission of defending Canada in the event that America attacks it. Which should be ridiculous. But here we are.

I'm sure I can list a few more embarrassing ones

But this is up there.
An absolute bending of the knee to an oppressive dictator for a nation that has mostly been our enemy in modern history, and to blame the victimized, brutalized nation on top of that. That's the not the America I grew up knowing; the America our grandparents fought to create.
It's a shameful slap in the face to all the great Americans over the decades who fought for freedom and push back against aggressors.
For those who opt for appeasement and isolationism, I urge you to please finally sit down and research history pre-WW II.
I've said it before and I'll say it again--Putin has some sort of leverage on Trump. There's no other explanation for how much he kisses his ###.

Its legit to try to start negotiations.

But the tone of appeasement and significant unilateral concessions are akin to surrendering.
It is also legit to ask European to step up military support for Ukraine. Depicting NATO countries as adversaries and showing affection for Putin’s Russia is both foolish and naive.

I've been out of pocket all of yesterday and haven't watched any news today so I don't know what Trump said, but if it's as stated here, that is very concerning and indeed shameful.
I agree with Tropical that a negotiated settlement should be sought, but it should be a hard ball negotiation and one that gives Ukraine an equal seat to the table as the aggressor Russia. Anything short of that is disgraceful.

Stupid people don't remember that Trump negotiated a surrender to the Taliban without the Afghan government present. He even wanted to bring them to Camp David, but the few decent people from his first administration stopped him. He drew down troops to such a low level, there was no chance at security without the Taliban's deal with him to not attack as long as he withdrew. He even pulled troops in Jan 2020, then bragged in an April speech that he put Biden in such a bad spot.

As bad as that was it doesn’t come close to this. Russia has been the enemy of the civilized world for many years with good reason. Putin is a murderous dictator. We should NEVER take their side for ANY reason. They are the opposite of what America is and was established to be. Just an absolutely pathetic thing for him to say about the victims of Ukraine. We are pissing off all of our allies. I’m embarrassed to be an American right now with this buffoon in office.

*checks notes*
the summer before the 2020 election, as a poison pill. IF Biden won the election, he'd either have to break the timeline, or choose a risky and potentially disastrous withdrawal (and it was pretty bad).
IF Trump won the election, he could break the pact and kick the can down the road and not a single Trump voter would have uttered a word.

He hates Zelenskyy, and loves Putin. He is pro-Russia.
This has always been Trump's view.
There's no 3-D chess going on here. He just doesn't see Europe as good allies, and thinks Ukraine deserves what they got.
America voted for this man now twice. We've been warned, but we voted him in anyway. Now, we have to live with it.

not the one sentence quote but the entire set of remarks so there is context.
I don't doubt that he said a bunch of crazy ####, that's par for the course but it is often not as crazy and the one sentence sound bites.

If you want any clips of the specific comments, you can find dozens of them where they clip out just his comment about Zelensky or starting the war or Ukraine in general. Just Google "Trump comments Ukraine" and you'll find plenty of reports. But the above is the full remarks.
Here's one with clips...

He just steamrolls through everything like a bull in a china shop 🤡🤡 he doesn’t do things in a way that is thought out and cautious. He just throws it out there and hopes it sticks. I don’t feel a bit sorry for the idiots that voted for him and have lost their jobs and the grants for farmers etc. They evidently didn’t think Project 2025 was something Trump knew anything about. 🙄
