No mention of evaluating coaches. I also think our strength and conditioning program needs addressing.

I think our terrible coordinator hires need addressing especially streeter he has no clue how to adjust in game it’s very clear and he has no clue what he’s doing… I was fine trusting Dabo while being cautiously optimistic bc he’s deserved that but now it’s clear where we were we could have hired anyone we wanted on both sides and these hires have been terrible … the secondary looks pathetic and d line does too while having all this nfl talent … and just run the #### ball I don’t get wr have a great running. game early on, when he had his inexplicable Kirby Smart moment and went for that fake field goal on our first scoring chance. Potter makes that, and the game would have had a totally different slant going forward.
I can imagine what went through Potter's head. "We're gonna fake this, instead of letting me kick a field goal that is WELL within my range? What the Heyall!" Could this have affected his mindset on the subsequent misses? We will never know, but I wish we had never tried that fake. We seem, among other things, to have become obsessed with trick plays in bowl games. They work far less times than they do.

Plus IMO if this son had run to the outside instead of inside it might have worked. That to me shows his son can not see the field in front of him. Outside was wide open. Stupid call made by Dabo.

Ask yourself: When was the last time we beat an elite opponent? Answer: Dec. 28, 2019. We beat Ohio State after Trevor and Tee Higgins brought us back. We have lost EVERY BIG GAME since then, including getting stomped in the champtionship game that year by Joe Burrow and LSU. (Winning the Cheese-Whiz bowl last year does not count; Iowa State was not an elite opponent). Against the Vols, we saw what it is like to have the kind of depth that we do not have, at most if not all positions. Tennessee lost their star quarterback and just plugged in another star, who was game MVP. Their two best receivers were not present. They just plugged in other great receivers. And that does not count their depth at other key positions, including offensive and defensive lines. The same is true of Georgia and Ohio State, among other elite programs: They have studs ready to go if starters get hurt. We just don’t have that kind of depth, and we haven’t since 2019. We were beaten by a better team last night.

We don’t have the depth because of all the scholarships given to friends kids, coaches kids, walk-ons and not using the Portal. Dabo has ruined what he built by being stubborn.

Yeah, that Cole Turner (and his older brother / all ACC safety) … the 2* recruits who are sons of Dabo’s teammate at Alabama -and- Tyler Venables are such awful players and illustrate our problem with nepotism.
And that Swinney boy the holder on ST … he keeps dropping the snaps and never manages to put the ball down in the correct place.
As for the portal, you assume that our inability to get high profile transfer players … so many of whom go to OH State, MI, TX, USC and other big money NIL schools, not to mention the other big money (ESPN / SEC network $$$) schools … reflects indifference in the portal from Dabo.
Do you realize that Clemson /IPTAY has no where near the resources of these other schools, but yet we manage to compete at a high level because of establishing the we-are-more-than-just-money culture?
And which among our existing roster players and incoming recruits do we turn away in order to sign a mid-tier portal player?
Venting frustrations and disappointment after a loss is understandable. I hate it that we lost. But spouting off with all of that nonsense is just childish.

Not having those resources like you stated is exactly why we shouldn’t have two star Turners at starting positions.

Yeah, I agree 76er. Sent a bad message early re: how we viewed their offense. Like we HAD to get 7 on that drive. Unforced error and very unnecessary at that point in the game. Wasn’t like we hadn’t just run it in the ACC title game either. They’d seen that look from our recent tape.

Would have been a great play if Drew would have pitched it to Potter before reaching the line of scrimmage. From what I saw, nothing but green grass to the end zone for BJ !! Now, had that happen, would y’all be bashing Dabo for calling the fake ?????????

C’mon … you and everyone else (me included) applaud the guts and ‘will to win’ whoever a successful fake punt or FG happens.
… but never a peep of praise about guts, yada yada yada from ANYONE when the trick play doesn’t work.
With our ‘we want to save our cake and also eat it too’ crowd, TNet is overrun with armchair coaches who deride the gamble to run the fake punt / FG.
(*). The best time to try a fake is when no one expects it. I hate that it failed, but have no quarrel with when, where, or why it was attempted.

Swinney 'incredibly disappointed' by missed opportunities is total BS. If there was any truth to your opening statement, the head line would have of how disappoint Dabo was, and that he intends to make new hires to assure that our team would never take the field again being as confused and out of place as they were, especially in the red zone where scoring is absent with badly coached teams with the talent that Clemson has on the team, and the real truth is that after getting in the red zone 7 times, there should have been no less than at least 21 points score with a talented good coached team. That didn't happen, and that is bc of very poor and inadequate coaching of highly talented players. Stop all your lying and pointing your fingers in the wrong direction bc a man's man is never afraid to tell the truth and the entire truth bc they fear no one, and the truth sets them free from having to lie to cover up other lies that were told!!!!

I believe most of the Clemson faithful is incredibly disappointed in this entire coaching staff. This rests on Dabo's head. He got us to the top and now he appears to be willing to watch us spiral downward because of nepotism and hiring friends and not changing anything when it desperately needs changing. If he doesn't make changes and we play as badly next year, fans will not show up. Just my opinion.

That’ll be good for me. Less fans showing up should mean that I can once again afford tickets and parking. And the traffic won’t be as bad. I will actually get to enjoy a game in person without all the constant negativity of our slide down the mountain as a program.

You got Thumbed down for speaking the truth, but don't they understand that truth or not, theres nothing you can say will change nothing of what Dabo has done to himself. Dabo done what has been done for hundreds of years, he got bigger than he could handle on his own without the people that helped him to get there, and the truth actually is, what is he willing to do right now to keep his Clemson success moving in the right direction.
Dabo's prior success has bought him a couple or few years to get it all headed back in the right direction before season tickets become plentiful, and the bottom falls out with donations that actually helps support the betterment for all of Clemson sports bc all Clemson sports rides on the success of the FB program.
Just look at how much all Clemson and Clemson sports has grown from Dabo's success of the FB program. He has to turn it back to winning the big games bc if he doesn't, Dabo will be gone, and another big time FB coach will be in his office bc, Dabo has proven that a successful FB program at Clemson leads to all things being better for Clemson, and that is the truth, and the heads that are in charge will do whatever it takes to try and keep a successful FB program with or without Dabo Swinney.
And if Dabo can't get the FB program back to being as successful as he once had it, the talking head in charge will go out and find someone that can bc they all have seen what Clemson can be with a very successful FB program, and they now won't except anything less bc they have witnessed what a successful FB program can be for Clemson, and they have seen that all is better with the success of our FB program!!!!

If I knew more about Coach Swinney's thoughts on coaching changes I might be more inclined to pontificate. But I don't. I'll go so far as to suggest that Streeter's offensive "plans" aren't cutting it. Maybe we need to go back to shared offensive coaching.?

If I knew more about Coach Swinney's thoughts on coaching changes I might be more inclined to pontificate. But I won't be arrogant enough to assume that I know more than the winningest coach at Clemson. Mistakes? Of course. But like moat successful CEO's, he delegates responsibility to his managers. Now if his managers aren't productive, he cans them. Dabo knows that!
I'll go so far as to suggest that Streeter's offensive "plans" aren't cutting it. Where was the tempo game plan that we heard about? Maybe we need to go back to shared offensive coaching?
Fake field goal was a stupid call, high school stuff. Should have taken the points. Like anyone who watched, this game was a debacle start to finish. BUT look at our record. Eleven wins and three losses isn't a terrible record. We're just used to winning all the time.
As for your tirade about lying, etc., that's just self righteous BS.

11-3 isn't bad, but when you consider that the ACC was the weakest conference and our only wins were over ACC teams and FCS/G5 cupcakes, there's not a whole lot to be optimistic about.

Best is no longer the standard. Selective loyalty and stubbornness has changed the standard to Above Average. Guess we should be satisfied going forward with 2nd tier.

instead of pointing fingers at those young men who were put in a position to fail, rather than succeed. This loss was on the coaching staff not being qualified to lead a Top 5-10 ranked program and a stubborn head coach who has been reading too many of his own headlines. All season long the Defense has carried the weight of the team, but unfortunately, they were less than motivated for excellence at all times. The offensive line was the weakest link by DII standards, much less FBS ones. I fully believe that the play calling is much closer to drawing a play out of a hat than anything close to be scripted or managed according to gametime circumstances. How can one explain that a scout team receiver (Turner) gets more targets than Randall/Williams combined?! Right now, Dabo's "coaching tree" is more like a clump of sagebrush...

to his coaching staff or recruiting philosophy.
After the sting of the loss wears off, we will hear more about how successful he’s been, how great it is to win your league, and what great people our coaches and players are.
He will probably throw in a comment or two about how he does things his way and always will, and if people aren’t okay with that he doesn’t care.
And in 2023, we will probably lose 2-3 games and miss the playoffs again.

Did you really expect Dabo to announce changes at the post-game press conference? Dabo will evaluate things in due time and will make good decisions. Having an accurate QB next season will be such an improvement and another year of experience for Godwin should be a great help. The great BV finished 6 -7 this year.

I agree. Most of the posters here don't seem to understand leadership and teamwork. Publicly trashing your coaches or players just destroys confidence and morale. A coach and leader doesn't do that. If I were Swinny, I would make sure my players stayed away from this site. Too bad he can't do the same for recruits. How do you think all this affects recruiting?

No one wants Dabo to bash players or coaches in a postgame press conference.
Dec 31, 2022, 3:00 PM
|
|
But the proof is in the pudding. After last season’s putrid offense, what did Dabo do? He kept the exact same players in key roles, and he promoted the QB coach to offensive coordinator. That new OC has limited experience as an OC from almost a decade ago, none at the power 5 level, and has nothing in his work history to suggest that he is capable of turning around our offense.
Not surprisingly, our offense didn’t get much better this year.
On defense, Dabo had the option of replacing our outgoing DC with a highly qualified DC, but instead he promoted two coaches on the staff with zero experience as DCs.
You’re right, a leader doesn’t publicly throw people under the bus. A leader also recognizes problems and fixes them. Dabo hasn’t done that the last few years.

It all starts with recruiting. When you use a filter to get good human beings who are upper level players, you leave out some of the best who are better on the field than off of it. That difference shows up when you play big time teams, and Tennessee was that this year. Clemson wasn't. Let's just face it. Imagine this Clemson team in the SEC. We would be somewhere in the upper middle. The ACC is a dream world for a good but not great team, and that is what we have been this year. Great teams crush at least occasionally, and that was not the story of Clemson even in a less than stellar league. The aura of dominance and exceptionalism is gone. The dogs bark, the caravan moves on, and we aren't in it.

pi$$ poor coaching effort. Cade’s been ready for months (no way last night should’ve been his first career start); your staff, on the other hand, has not. You and your coaches and staff have done an overall abysmal job this year of managing player position transitions, growth and development, preparation, execution, in-game situational management, time management, halftime adjustments, roster management, and a surprising lack of overall awareness and ability to adapt our program to the fast-paced, monumental changes occurring in the college football landscape. I love you Dabo, and what you believe in, but your coordinators have got to go, and IMO you deserve a paycut after this season. Our coaching staff deserves to share in this heaping helping of humble pie we the fans have been forcefed all season long. I think it’ll do them some good. It better! The future of our program depends on it!

Yes, I’m incredibly disappointed too. Mostly in the coaching. That game was such an embarrassment. I was torqued off from the very beginning when Swinney called a fake field goal attempt so his son would have an opportunity to get a bowl game highlight. Horrible decision. A fake field goal attempt on your first drive? Always take the points on your first drive. That would’ve gotten Potter into the groove. He was never good after that

That is when the head coach put his personal interests over what was best for the team.

I agree. Why would they not correct Cade running out of the pocket 20 to 30 yards to throw up a pass that has no chance? The in game coaching is not happening. #24 for Tennessee for was coming through untouched all night.

We can’t do anything that will change the past. I, too, would like to have seen Cade play earlier in the season. Let’s imagine next year with Cade playing - greatly improved passing game, the WRs and TEs knowing they will get a catchable ball. Then Shipley & Mafah will be even better behind a more experienced line. With the addition of some players coming back on the D, we should see improvement there.

He is managing an enterprise now which has taken away his hands on approach. The loss of staff is glaring this year and has been in decline since 2019. Offensively we need to look at new coaches or reassigning them...
I truly think we have Dabo for one more year then Saban retires and he will go to Bama. I have always thought that and this year it is evident we are pumping the cool aid into all of our drinks. I love Dabo. I hope he wants to stay our coach for another decade, at this rate though we will see how much desire he has to right the ship. It wasn't a horrible year, the world is not ending but we failed to play or coach up to our standards. It all falls on Dabo's shoulders.
Defensively there are signs of promise in 2023, Offensively as well but the line and WR's need to greatly improve in 2023 if we want to win 11 games.

I am tired of Dabo trying to make up for the lack of experience with some of his coaching staff. Streeter is way in over is head as OC. He needs to be re-assigned or removed from the staff. He has shown no leadership on the offensive side of the ball. I like him as a person but we are are regressing with Brandon as our OC. Too many young coaches, former players or friends on this staff. Dabo needs to shake up the tree with an outside hire. The loss of key assistant coaches is glaring the last two years.
The problem was not DJ, it starts with Brandon and Grisham needs to be reevaluated as well. Yes I am frustrated but these issues have been the common theme all year. Dabo has to manage the Clemson enterprise and to do so he needs to improve with some new staff.

how keeping Klubnik on the sidelines most all season. I think most folks would have been fine to see him learn trial by fire. No doubt that's how the defensive backfield has played this year. Also incredibly disappointed by the OC and DC in their year overall. Have they learned anything? Seems like the quickly throw the players under the bus. When you point a finger you have 3 pointing back to you. Are we back to being satisfied with a winning season, beat your rival then win a bowl game. Will be interesting if there will be fire first out of the staff then see it translates to the players. One thing for sure will never pay attention to talk coming out of spring camp and fall camp. Proof will have to left on the field.

How is Streeter such a worthless turd if we gained 480 yards on a glorious SEC defense?

When you cross mid field 7 times, get into the red zone and do not score that’s play calling and coaching. There was no in game change. Plays are predictable. If you watch film on us you have a high probability of knowing what we will run at what time/place on the field.

Offensive line play was awful last night, missing blocks, pass protection...they almost got Klubnik killed. Granted streeter could have took pressure off the kid by running more but, their play was not good. A number of those drives deep in Tennessee side of the field were killed by poor o-line play.
During the year DJ had very little time to throw as well. If true evaluation of the coaching staff is going to be done, we have a real problem here and it's not getting better. A offensive line doing their jobs and not constantly missing assignments would solve a lot of our problems. There's not much physicality on that side of the ball, that has to change if were going to get better.

I'm in 95% agreement with most of the comments to this article, its taken me a while getting to the point of commenting after watching the poor coaching and overall physical play of the O line. We definitely need some overhauling on the entire Team. Dabo is definitely going to have to step up his approach to getting quality O line recruits to compete with the SEC boys. The OL was tired and was not in the shape needed to hang with the SEC. And Dabo started the ball rolling downhill on that first drive with a F#@king fake field goal with his 180lb hamburger son trying to run the ball, give me a break !! LMFAO on that call. Cade proved he can run the football Team but he has to have some help from the coaching staff. Dude , you take all the points you can get wit an elite SEC Team. And then with 7:38 or so left in the game, on 4th down he goes for it on our 35 yd line, Cade was running for his freaking life on that call and was intercepted, Dabo and Streeter both need they're ARSES kicked. OMG I changed the channel on that F#$king call.
Yes Clemson has been an elite power in the ACC, but as mentioned before the ACC is a weak conference.
Florida State, UNC, NC State, better look out next year Dabo.
Looking to see what happens next year!!

easy since 2020, and not even since 2018 against top flight defensive competition. The defense may not be completely stellar, but offense like we had back then would mask a lot of ills, just as it did back then. Remember, we won some 42-36 games in those eras, as well.

Looked like we didn’t match up physically with Tenn up front. Blocking schemes seemed flawed. Didn’t handle blitz well.
On D, back end mistakes cost us again.
Coaching errors cost us 6 points but wouldn’t have made a difference.
Biggest reveal was poor red zone scoring. Not sure what the issue is there. But that was a consistent fail.
Talent gap at WR. Hope that gets addressed. Coaching change needed there.
As for Tenn, nice bounce back after inexplicable SC thumping. Impressed. Hope they can maintain current level of play and challenge UGa.
Overall. Improvement over 2022. CK2 still has a way to go but should be successful. With some use of portal, maybe a coaching upgrade, maybe a couple of key guys who could leave decide to stay - Tigers should challenge FSU for another ACC championship. ND, SC games will be big.
But a “stay the course” 8-9 win minor bowl 2023 will put Dabo assistants on hot seat, maybe Dabo too. Never thought I’d say that.
