More than 1,000 young men will now lose their scholarships because they entered the portal and didn't get selected. Isn't this great for our nation and the world of college sports? To know that thousands of students will lose their path to education just warms my heart and brings a smile to my face because you know... WIN AT ALL COSTS! <<<<---- ((SARCASM))

Sarcasm of course, and to think Dabo said that it would be like this all the way back in 2014, but nobody listened. For those in favor of the portal without restraints or limits, I would reason to believe that they've never built a successful business and if they did then it was by pure luck. The difference between a successful business model and a failed business model boils down to profitable longevity. Anyone can build a business and earn a nice retirement within 2-3 years, but a true successful business model will provide a retirement for many people over the course of several generations.

I hold the belief that Dabo is a sound investor and understands how to build a business model from the ground up. He knows what it takes to create sustainable long-term returns. Is it not evident in his track record to the rest of the nay sayers? I tend to believe in a coach that predicted such scenarios before the system was even implemented. It's going to get even worse when there is no more walk on players on the team.

Portal is searching for homeostasis -- the cautionary tale of 1k SAs being left high and dry is just another data point on the path to normalization.

It may get worse before it gets better but it will get better (lower volumes)

They are adults and making life decisions like everyone else. I wish I hit on 1000% of my decisions. If they really want a degree not getting selected isn’t preventing that. Plenty of kids never even get a scholarship opportunity and still graduate. They are not kids they are adults.

I was 19 years old when I first fired my M-16 in anger towards an enemy combatant. So, I understand the sentiments. However, it's not about mourning the individual as much as it is the loss of educational production across the board. It carries the potential to adversely impact American society for the long term. I'm worried about that aspect. Imagine deploying to fight in two wars, losing several friends, and returning to a nation in ruins due to the pursuit of money. Sure, this is just collegiate sports, but it seems to be the way of many industries as of late.

Thank you for your service. I too am a vet.

My point is that we trust an 18 year old to make a decision that could literally cost him his life. We should expect a college football player of a similar age to weigh the pros and cons of entering the portal - the risk of a lost scholarship. We may disagree on this, but I don't think guys not picked up from the portal and losing out on educational opportunities will be the demise of the country.

Then let's stop admitting guys to school who wouldn't come close to qualifying based on their high school GPAs, test scores, and extracurriculars, but gained admission just because they are really good at a sport.

Make it like division III, where you have to be admitted to school in order to play the sport. No special exceptions just because you might make our team good.

I agree with you JK. For once, I agree with you. However, Clemson has a very high standard to remain on the roster for any team sport. I don't believe that Dabo would allow player to lollygag around and not attend class. Several have been suspended for "violating team rules" in the past. Most were for using recreational marijuana, but some were because of missing class, practice, or study hall.

College athletics stopped caring about academics years ago. It can probably be argued that most of our football players wouldn't have been accepted if it wasn't for athletics. I don't like it but college football now exists for 2 things in the eyes of most players: to make NIL money and go pro. In this environment college football is a zero sum game where money is buying championships. Do I like it? No. Do I see it changing anytime soon? No. I think this is part of the reason Clemson will not receive an SEC bid. If your a current SEC member why would you want to see Clemson being given more money to play the game?

The portal isn’t the primary factor for the Clemson downturn. After this season it will be even more evident that inexperienced position coaches hurt player development and contributed to recruiting misses. Dabo has begun the transition back by moving on from Coach Hall and Coach Austin. Coach Grisham was probably on shaky ground but it was important to secure Wesco and Moore. Now it’s do or die for him to develop them. Another season of poor blocking and route running from that position group and there likely will be an upgrade at that coaching position too. The culture and NIL is mostly retaining the Tiger’s starters, now it’s time for the starters to play up to their potential.

Regarding the Portal, expect more activity if they move forward with 105 scholarship players, and different decisions by each school regarding how they will distribute the revenue sharing. That’s two more variables creating uncertainty and motivating players caught in the back end of the depth chart. Personally, I think it will create more transfers of freshmen, but maybe more roster stability among the upperclassmen.

Don’t you think the 105 scholarship limit will help work off those 1000 SAs in the portal? I know not every school will give 105 but a 16 team conference can absorb nearly a third of the leftovers but it’s more likely half of the extras would go to high schoolers. Still it’s something.

I agree with you. It breaks the heart how many of these young men are squandering great opportunities for no gain. Yes, they can find a way to redeem themselves and get their education the hard way. And maybe that's not a bad thing. But it hurts to see promising young men ruining such amazing opportunities chasing a hollow dream. This is one of the reasons I desperately want the Tigers to win it all again this year. I want a win to shut up all of these knuckleheads who say you can't win without selling your soul. I want everyone to see that you can indeed win doing things the right way...the CLEMSON way. I want it proven again that loyalty, integrity, and training up young men the right way does matter. And that you don't need to discard players for new ones like this is some kind of poker game. It's a developmental game. It's a game where we have made great men for ages. I'd hate to see us change that. Go Tigers!

Wow, dramatic much?

These players are grown men who help schools, conferences, coaches, and the media make significant sums of money. It's only reasonable that they have NIL opportunities, as well as the flexibility of transferring to another school if they so choose.

The holier than thou approach which states that the transfer portal is bad/evil/immoral is ridiculous. Rather than viewing it as some horrible thing, it should be viewed as a tool. This tool can be used for good. Dabo needs to start looking at it that way.

For example, if a player decides to leave Clemson, perhaps our coaches can be proactive in helping them find a good landing spot. Make a phone call or two on his behalf to a coaching contact at another program who might take him. Help them make a highlight video they can share with other teams. Clemson could become a leader in helping players in these situations. What a nice recruiting pitch it would be to players and their families if we could say, "It is our hope and intention for you to spend the next several years as a Clemson Tiger, and we will coach you and nurture you in every aspect of your life while you're here, with the goal of making you the best football player and man you can be. But should you decide you need to go elsewhere at some point, we are committed to helping you find a great school that meets your goals. Here's how we have done that for others."

And of course, we can also use the portal to fill areas of need, to get talented and experienced players who we feel offer the personality traits and the football skills we need to improve our team.

Or, we can continue viewing the transfer portal as the devil, and acting like schools who use it are bad while we are better since we don't - continuing our slide as a program in the process while failing to provide our players (as well as potential players from other schools) the opportunity to be part of a better team.

This all flows in the same vein as car vs motorcycles. About 40% of the cost of a new car is the cost of adhering to safety regulations (either impact or safety devices for the occupants). Yet we still allow someone to hop on an angine with two wheels attached to an tear off down the road.

I would wager the motorcycle is the better image of freedom than the car is even though if something happens you chances of severe injury are alot higher.

So do we treat sports with freedom instead of regulation? Do we want finacial carnage from over regulation in the name of safety (the car) or financial risk that could lead to disaster from living more free (the motorcycle)?

Since you mentioned entrepreneurship...

College is a great time for these players to start working on important life skills that can absolutely help them if they ever want to start a business. They have the opportunity to learn valuable skills, on and off the field. They learn hard work and discipline. They learn about the importance of learning unique and marketable skills, as well as the importance of building connections with the right people as well as marketing and promotion. What an awesome opportunity to get a step ahead in life, whether they play football or not.

With the portal, they learn how to evaluate potential teams, programs, and locales. They work on their research skills, as well as their interview skills. They have the opportunity to build connections that can help them in football and in life.

Of course, they have to choose wisely. That's on them. Hopefully they will seek good counsel and surround themselves with the right people. If they do, great. If not, then valuable lessons can be learned which will only help them moving forward.

We must remember that these are adults who chose to play football and chose to enter the transfer portal.

What should really warm your heart, is that the people that came up with the portal and thought it was best for the athletic kids on scholarship, is all those people implementing such a thing as the portal, most if not all of them have a college degree hanging on a wall in their nice offices. They deserve all the credit for destroying so many young poor people chances of ever attaining a college degree. They looked at the bright side of the portal, it helps lesson the chance that someone in sports with a degree could challenge them for their jobs in those really nice offices!!!

I have the feeling that most of the players in the portal aren’t dreaming about walking across a stage one day.

You're right about not dreaming, once most of them that enter the portal, their dreams are all but over.

What percent of the players in the portal were told to GTFO because they weren't going to have a scholarship next year?

Most schools cut players even though it's against the rules...

Thank you for your service one vet to another.

As of the last 7-10 days over 1600 names in portal. Belief is some 400 will find a spot. That leaves `1200 who have lost their educational scholarship. Shameful. Not sure who is guiding these young men but it is sad the outcome.

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that college football is a business. And that college football is using the NCAA rules to collude with each other to not pay the players. This is against the law in the USA since the late 1800's.

The portal was a last ditch effort by the NCAA to get the courts to rule the other way (that the players are students just like all the other students on campus).

The courts are not supposed to be in the business of making it great "for our nation or world of college sports". That is the job of the legislative branch.

If the courts took on this role they would be "activist judges" and that is bad.

It’s a sad situation. Too bad we can’t help some of these players by bringing them to Clemson and helping them get a degree.

Of course, they would need to fill a need and apparently we don’t have any
