Thought the hire was interesting. I’ve been lukewarm about him. Thought he was better than Streeter but needed more time to show what he can do.
He’s shown us. Dabo kept him a secret for a reason. This dude can coach. We have to stop with the slander now. This is a great defense.

We have a lot of young talent on that side of the ball too. Gonna lose a lot, but we have to love the young pieces that will be returning.

They’ve been great this year. Would have held Cuse to 7 if Briningstool didn’t fumble. Held FSU to 17 in regulation.
He can coach.

Are you watching? The majority of the games our corners are on islands in man in receivers hip pockets. If you are referencing when we play a zone defense… ok, sure.. too soft?

They would be if the offense hadn’t give up 41 points on turnovers. At least 14 scored by the opponents defense. Add that to the 14 or more points that the opponent had less than 5 yards to score.

All points - no matter how they are scored - count against the defense. It’s why total defense is a better metric of actual defensive performance. We’re 9th in total defense against the 6th hardest strength of schedule. No one ahead of us in total defense have played a harder schedule and most have played trash schedules .

Wes as DC is warming on me. Wes as a position coach? Still very skeptical as I watch our LBs attempt arm tackles and not maintain gap integrity to shutdown the run. Right now I think he’s benefiting from 3 starters with athleticism to cover up lapses in fundamentals. The situation might be more concerning next season with the development of the backups.

Agree 100% and been saying the same, the defense has played great all year IMO and even in the duke game based on the situations the offense put them in… but we still have idiots that have no clue that make themselves feel better about their life I guess by calling him fat and he needs to be fired. We should have to take some type of test before being allowed to post lol

Much improved secondary but I don't care how great they are, no secondary can cover when only 3 rush and give the QB enough time to sit back there make a ham sandwich, eat it, and give his Receivers plenty of time to get open.

Regardless of the competition, Cuse was averaging 44ppg… held them to 14 (only 7 without the turnover).
This season, the defense has held every team under their average. No other team will hold FSU to 17 points. Sure there are some holes and problems—LBs in deep coverage, DL not being able to produce a ton of sacks, rushing 3, and so on—but overall he’s done a good job.

The biggest difference between Wes and BV might be the offenses. BV had issues too but had the luxury of an offense putting up 40+ routinely.

Wes is going to, unfairly, be under the microscope at all times though because he's taking over for Brent. And of course everyone will forget the times Brent rushed 3 and let teams go down the field (it definitely happened) or the games Brent's D got exposed.
Obviously Brent was an incredible DC, but he wasn't perfect all the time.

Correct. BV would get burnt on deep balls when blitzing. And we also had times where we’d give up 3rd and long bc he’d blitz.
But the overall body of work was tremendous.

Is he BV? NO. It's impossible for anyone to fill those shoes. But he is making strides this season. The D has been really good save for a few series. What I wanted to see was him bringing some timely, well disguised, come from anywhere blitzes. BV was the master. I saw that today. They got after a tough, mobile QB all day long and it was effective. The D play calling today was not sit back in a zone and react. It was "we are going to put guys in your face and in your #### all day. I like it.
Kudos! 1 TJ Parker is an All American in the making. He is playing as well as anyone on the roster. 2 we have the best trio of LBs in the country. Wade Woodaz has to be one of the most underrated players in the country. 3 I think the corners did a good job filling in for Wiggins. Jones had a couple of breakdowns but not a bad job out of those guys.
All in all, the D is coming along.

My only beef with Wes is play calling. He sits in zone more often than I like. Maybe that's bc he doesn't have total trust in the safeties. They had a couple of busts again today. Missed tackles was a problem today, too. But I'm fine with the overall scheme. I would pressure more often is really the only complaint.

Has got to improve. Syracuse should have kept running the ball. ND will grind us into powder if we keep tackling like that.
Tackling is at least 50% effort. The other part is well-drilled repetition. So it’s 100% fixable.

Now you’re talking, agreed! Wes needs some seasoning and has been very successful this year.
The FSU game really was nicely game planned. Travis had very little and Tigers defense played well enough to win that game, offense and special teams couldn’t get it done.
Hell, IMO, Garret Riley has been a failure in Clemson compared to Wes Goodwin!! And yes I said it and at this point through 5 games I think it’s obvious. Anyone who thinks this offense has played up to potential is not paying attention. He isn’t out there turning it over, but some of the playcalling has been bad too many times.

Agree on Goodwin, but I wouldn’t sell in Riley just yet. I thought the play calling has been much better (outside of the calls on that last drive in regulation last week). Pushing the ball downfield today was great and Cade made some big time throws. I like what I’m seeing more often than not.

I mean the entire off-season all anybody said was watch out for the offense. Needless to say the offense has been pretty bad when compared to the defense.
Today was close to total dominance both sides of the ball. Still plenty to improve on but today was a very nice day all-around.

I think Wes got a good chewing out last week by his boss when he went to that 3-man line in the second quarter as a base defense and not just in super-long yardage situations, which let FSU back in the game. Seemed to start with pressure today and pretty much kept it up when he found out SYR couldn't block our 4 down linemen. Much better today against a really good offense. He's learning.

The game I'm most concerned about the defense is the ND game. That run game will ###### your soul if you can't stop it. Miami, believe it or not, is my second most concerning. They are starting to show a run game they can lean on, too. Maye is Maye and that game will be it's own challenge but the Tigers match up against their Defense better than ND.
I have no idea which SCar team shows up. The one that played UNC or the one that played UGA. I don't think they know who they are either. Right now it's Rattler Heave n Hope. No consistent offensive approach at all.

I don't know what "good for business" even means lol.
I praise/defend the program when it makes sense to me, like with this Wes Goodwin post. I also criticize the program when it makes sense to me, like when I talk about our lack of utilizing the portal + hiring inexperienced coaches.
You can call me a moderate.

There is no such thing as 'extremely objective', you're either objective or you're not; extremely is you attempting to sell yourself to others and maybe even to yourself. It is just hyperbolic, emotional shyatt - Nothing personal.
I don't want to come off as you're all bad, you're not, not remotely, because you at least try to support your feelings on certain issues. I wish more people would do as much, but they're too lazy or just don't know how? Either way, no good can come of it...
I don't care that anyone criticizes, it's the how they do and I appreciate the how you go about it for the most. You throwing FSU under the bus was disappointing, seemingly lashing out at them because limited portal Clemson out played the oft portal Noles? That's an opinion, but from your post and history it seems to find purchase.
You're not objective, don't sell it that way, but you are a good poster, so I read and will continue to do so. That of course does not mean I'll always or perhaps ever agree with your conclusions, and mostly so far I don't.
Stay skrong...

I think he’s a great Xs and Os guy. Tackling has fallen off. For whatever reason the right side of the defense allows huge yardage gains. It seems to have happened every game...it seems. Overall, I’m happy with the job he’s done.

Agree, I think it took Dabo calling him out at halftime of the FSU game to get more aggressive. The defense is really coming on strong. Love the aggression. We do miss too many tackle though.

If you are a true tiger fan stop the slander toward all thing Clemson. It is fan support and togetherness that has brought Clemson to the level it is today. Get rid of the negative

The biggest problem is following Brent. That’s not fair for anybody. That being said, he’s good, the defense is good. Not great, not elite, probably not at the level they could be. But good. Great rushing d, ok passing d, good scoring d. But he’ll never be Brent

They’ll never be a Wes fan because they’re weird obsession with BV. They’ve also made themselves believe BVs defense never gave up any big plays, never missed tackles, and they were perfect 100% of the time. Our fans don’t live in reality anymore they live in fairy fairy land where Clemson football did everything 110% perfect from 2015-2020. So nothing Wes does will ever be good enough for the miserable bloodsuckers.

With the exception of the 3 man fronts, pleased with Goodwin so far in year 2 Wouldn't be opposed to hiring someone with a fire in his belly to take LB's off his plate. Their too soft this season and would Trenton Simpson even regressed last year Skalski would have been a dynamite addition but it didn't take long for BV to jump on the opportunity to hire him

I hope so, but don't think a single game is proof. Let's see how they do over the next couple of games. This game is certainly what I had expected from the defense...

But I would.
We're decent. Looking at the talent, it doesn't match for me. Arm tackling, lack of effort, d line play giving up holes to 250 LB linemen.
Still not buying what he's selling. Not yet. I'll admit defeat on getting better, but not Clemson standard with that much talent IMO.
Blast off you care to. I give no #####

I like the job Wes has done overall this season. I think we have a special defense this year and gotta give him credit. My only gripe really is receivers sometimes being wide open but we get saved by a QB that overshoots his guy or like Shradder who was finding WRs but kept throwing it out of bounds to them. FAU QB had at least three or four times he overthrew his WR that was wide open. I know there was at least a few of out of bound throws by Cuse that could been big plays but thankfully they weren’t. I haven’t seen the replay yet so just going off what I thought I saw live. Overall I think he’s done a good job and it was good to see us getting pressure on the QB for a change.

some questionable packages this year has got me on the fence
Oct 2, 2023, 11:36 AM

going 3 man against FSU to end the 1st half was a huge reason why the got 7 before halftime. That kinda strategy has me worried about crunch time moments going forward. I hope Dabo made it clear that this was a miscalculation but the fact that he called that really had me questioning his philosophy.
Keep in mind.. this defense is really good personnel wise and is the last of the Venables crew that played under coach V. We lose our linebackers and 3 of our 4 starters on the defensive line after this year. So we will have all new guys starting next year. I hope we fill those gaps with guys we have. I know Woods and Parker will be players but the jury is still out of playmakers for the other positions. WE'll see.
And obviously i'm judging this defense in terms of Elite/CFP level defenses. They'll be good but can they evolve into and elite unit is my question.
