Brownell doesn't suck. He isn't a great coach and we should have fired him a decade ago, but he isn't a bumbling idiot.

Failing to continue one of the most embarrassing, negative streaks in all of college basketball history is not an accolade that should determine the long term fate of a coach. The team yesterday played excellent against a quality opponent. But winning two of three is as much testimony to UNC’s decreased stature (they were 14-19 and had only their 2nd losing season in 60 years when we beat them the first time) and increasingly even handed officiating as the conference has expanded. Despite merciless complaining on here yesterday was 20-20 in fouls. Fouls were called 31-14 in the 2008 game that got off to a similar start (as referenced by Tim Bourret also).

Your lack of critical thinking skills is more laughable. UNC has not finished a season ranked in the AP poll in 4 years. They haven’t gone more than 2 seasons unranked since 1965-1966. Which is the only time they have gone 4 or more years without making the poll since the very first time they finished a season ranked. They have only finished a season unranked 7 times between 1966-67 and 2018-19. They have only left the poll more than one season once during that stretch. I’m talking about finishing ranked, not just appearing. Of the 47 seasons in that window, they have finished top ten 33 times, and top five 21 times. They don’t have a single player projecting as a first round draft pick. Many draft boards don’t have any Carolina players in either round. PJ Hall is by consensus projected a full round ahead of anyone on the Carolina team. AP ranking doesn’t mean jack squat at this point. Everything I’ve just listed is a fact. If you think that describes a North Carolina program that hasn’t decreased in stature, that is laughable.

Your profile says you graduated in 1996. I guess you slept through the Barnes era? I don’t understand how anyone who has seen two of the preceding 3 coaches make 3 straight tourneys could describe 3 in 14 years as “progress”. Progress from the dramatic step backwards he took the program? It is fine if you want to keep Brownell, but don’t gaslight us about the reasons why.
