I'll probably get slammed for this, but.....

Kearse is still undrafted because he played the later part of the season not to get hurt. I'm the biggest Homer and apologist there is for Clemson players. However, I'm not blind. If Kearse is reading, I'm sorry man, but you played laid back in the Alabama game. I've rewatched the game a couple of times and I see it everytime. I saw a play where it a eared a tackle was being made, and it was, but this is the game everyone fights to get to. Kearse started to go in for support and make sure the tackle was made and he just backed away.
On the long touchdown to the Bama TE he let up on his chase. He was running him down in an angle. He got within a few yards from him around the 15 yardline and just slowed up. What if he hits him and knocks the ball loose. What if he tackles him and we hold them to a field goal. Kearse thought he had done enough in 2014 and the first half of 2015 to secure a high round draft pick. Plain and simple. Could I be wrong? Could he have been hiding an injury? Who knows? I know that TJ Green, who changed positions and had to learn how to play safety is already drafted and Kearse isnt.
Lastly, I just thought of this. In the 2014 Louisville game, Kearse ran down a WR and slung him ti the ground like a rag doll, but I'm supposed to believe he can't rundown a TE in the biggest game of his life the very next year? He does that and plays at a high level and we win? He is already drafted.
Sorry in advance to anyone I may upset.

He got a round 3 grade from the NFL before he declared. The reason he's still isn't drafted has nothing to do with his play in that game and everything to do with his speed. Some teams question whether he can play safety in the NFL or move down to LB.

Which is exactly why he should have stayed another year. IMO of course.

Yes his speed, did you see his 40 time?

4.62 and his 3 cone time was 7.02, those numbers are why he had a NFL grade of 5.39. It had absolutely nothing to do with his play against Alabama.
Do you think the #2 pick in the draft was taken because of his on the field play? No he wasn't it was all about measurables, the same things that kept Mac Alex out of the 1st round. His play didn't keep him out its all about potential.

I wouldn't be surprised if his complacency at the end of the season led to lazy combine preparation. Lack of training and being in shape or something because I'm pretty sure we can count on tape a faster 40 time.

Shape of his life this season. The Lazer timing system doesn't lie. Running a player down on a kickoff when you have the angle doesn't make you faster than the player you ran down.

He seemed to get sloppy on potential tackles he'd normally make..in the USC, UNC & Bama games...imho.

I may be mistaken, but I thought he earlier (last year?)

...ran like in the 4.3 range? Was he ever clocked at a time in the 4.3 range?
If so, it sure looks like he is injured.
IF he is injured, I just don't know why he didn't realize he was going to hurt his draft possibilities and just stay another year in college, heal up, etc., and go pro when he was in better shape. I know the future doesn't promise that he'd be in better shape, but his present circumstances, IF he's injured, are crystal clear.

he was never clocked in the 4.3, he was a 3 star in HS with limited offers. the lore of him being a freak of nature was invented on the chat boards, not by the coaches or the stop watches.

I think that had more to do with his uncle being Jevon than the message boards. His uncle could hold a ruler comfortably between his thumb and pinky.

To be fair, he straight balled out in 2014 and the beginning of this year. I thought he was the best player on that side of the ball sans Mac going into this season. I have talked to his teammates. They agree there was just something not there. No fire. No energy.

No, an athlete. ESPN 4-star too, I think. Also, re 40:

While I can't find where I read about his 40 time earlier in college being in the 4.3 range, I did find the following:
http://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2014/08/23/kearse-leads-clemsons-crop-oversized-defensive-backs/14480003/
and
http://www.news-press.com/story/news/2014/01/02/jayron-kearse-thrives-at-clemson/4281643/ (I suppose Kearse himself could have provided that 40 time, but you would think it had some sort of validity with Venables having been interviewed for the article too.)
and
http://www.tigernet.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1464654 (not very reliable source for 40 time, but one would think he would be questioned by players and staff if he just outright lied about it)
and
http://www.charlestonscene.com/20160428/160429380/blog-where-clemsonx2019s-2016-nfl-draft-prospects-might-end-up-this-weekend (for a 40 time to be called "unexpectedly slow," that means he has probably been timed faster)
and
http://www.ganggreennation.com/2016/1/10/10735506/jayron-kearse-scouting-report-db-clemson-2016-nfl-draft (gives a projected 40 time, which had to be based on something...which is good, although not elite)
A couple of quick checks indicates that the average 40 for an NFL safety is 4.62 (2008-2012) and some of the faster times from the combines are in the 4.5 range (minus the freakish outliers).
Without more solid information on what Kearse has run in the past, it does suggest he has run faster than his NFL combine time of 4.62. So, while not in the 4.3 range in the past (at least I can't confirm), he seems to have been faster. If he has run in the upper 4.4's or the low 4.5's, that would be a pretty good time, making the 4.62 time a head-scratcher.
So, that begs the question. Is he hurt?

Not being able to react quickly enough. He has some top end speed, but takes him a long time to get going. He's a tweener. Looks like a skinny DE playing safety he's so long.

You make some good points. I expected more out of Kearse on a few occasions.

He's 5th round talent according to some of the pundits I've heard and the general feeling among them is that he should have come back for one more year.

I think that you are spot on with this. I will also through in the long Henry TD run in the National Championship Game as well. Up until like you stated about mid year the kid had excellent tape but afterwards his play on the field changed. His 40 time also hurt him as well. Now if he was injured then that would explain a lot but if not, then for you players that look to get to this point remember Tape Tape Tape. Make sure you ball out whenever your feet hit that field. Kearse is a game changer and he showed that in many games at Clemson but in several games towards the end of the year some of his play was lack luster to include the National Championship the biggest game of his carrier.

It's no mistake he was not the same player during the second half of the season. Mid way through the schedule he decided he was leaving early and didn't want to get hurt, it was clearly evident from his play.
He's a Tiger and I wish him the best but I don't think his loss will be felt as much on our D this year as some might think.

I think many of us saw the same thing in Kearse. Once we knew how good he was, we expected it from then on. I have to wonder whether or not the coaches did NOT see the same thing when Kearse took the second half of the season off last year. I know BV is an excellent coach, so I am confused on this one. I'm surprised that BV didn't bench Kearse more last year. Anyway, I wish him well in his life decision. We all know how good he can be.
What would be fun to watch is Jevon Kearse announcing Jayron Kearse for the Titans and playing with Dodd. It could happen.

He's falling because he's a linebacker trying to play safety. It's really that simple.
