If you're called "roll tide" why have an elephant as mascot?

Explain the correlation between the two. BTW, Paul Finebaum has huge ears....like an elephant; HMMMM.

Good question, I always wondered the same thing about Auburn eagle/tigers too.

The eagle has something to do with one appearing during some battle...I don't know the details but any and all are welcome to include this post in the wiki about the topic.

Auburn was originally two different schools, a military college that had the eagle as a mascot and a second college that had the Tiger. They merged, I don't remember what year, and kept both mascots as a tribute to the two different schools. Buddy of mine growing up is an Auburn alumnus, that's what he said anyway.
The others I wonder about are Stanford, who are supposed to be the Cardinals, but have a dude in a tree outfit running around the sidelines. I guess the Stanford Fighting Junipers didn't have as good of a ring to it.
And Virginia Tech.... ### is a Hokie? I had heard it was some made up nonsense from a song, and really there is no such "thing" as a hokie....but why is their mascot a turkey?
Bama should just change their name to the Alabama Fighting Forrest Gumps.

Crimson Tide is their team name

It's a type of highly poisonous algae found in the gulf, if I'm not mistaken. The elephant came from a nickname a reporter had during one of their bowl games who said their offensive line was so big they looked like a bunch of red elephants. I believe Frank Howard was one of the said red elephants.

Roll tide 1907 used by a reporter referring to them playing in a field of mud. The elephant was some a reference to the noise of team running onto the field, "hold your horses the elephants are coming". Unrelated the two

Almost correct. The reporter said the team looked like a crimson tide rolling across the field. Thus Crimson Tide as the nickname and Roll Tide as the phrase.
The varsity team coming through the tunnel was described by someone else as sounding like a herd of elephants.

A noted early Alabama sports writer called the varsity coming out onto the field akin to watching a herd of elephants due to their size and power

Something about their o-line

Apparently they were really killing someone with their JV team o-line and at half the varsity guys came out of the locker room looking like a herd of red pachyderms. Some guy wrote that in the Tuscaloosa paper and it just stuck. Or something like that.

Actually, it's because we'll stomp your ###, even in the ocean.
Just kidding. You're reference to the elephant is correct. As for the Crimson Tide moniker, and I don't remember the year, Bama had not been having a particularly good couple of years. An announcer had dubbed their O line "The thin red line". The following year, they had beefed up the O line and as they came onto the field he said something to the effect that they were no longer the thin red line, they looked more like a Crimson Tide.
HTH.

Crimson tide came from a rainy game way back where an analyst said it looked like a crimson tide was flowing on the field where the dye from Bama's jerseys and socks was coloring the water.
