14 member 2025 class with no real additional recruits on the horizon.
HS recruiting is extremely important for Dabo's model, but NIL is throwing a monkey wrench into the ROYBUS engine compartment.

I just don't get the obsession with Dabo and the portal. Get a 4 / 5 star kid from HS and bring him up the Dabo way, or get the latest shiny thing from Upper Buttcrack State.

We lost among the fewest players in the nation from a power 4 team. While the portal hasn't helped us, it's hardly inflicted great pain either

Mukuba was clearly passed by Barnes as a starter. He wants a check this year, with a new kid can't blame him, and next year in the NFL. Being a back up isn't helping him with that

That just about sums it up, but only if we are getting 4 or 5 star kids to replace them. If this year with NIL in full effect is any indication then we aren't going to get many of those high 4 or 5 star kids. We will continue to get outbid. Sure we will get some but will it be enough?

Athletic scholarships are one year renewable. Players are free to leave whenever they like, so the job of the coaches and support staff is to make sure the players are getting what they need and providing them opportunities for growth on and off the field.
Of course, every program is going to lose some players, but it's imperative that we keep as many of the major contributors as we can. We have largely done that, so your dramatic example of a 4- or 5-star player leaving after a couple of years is silly. That hasn't been a concern here, at least not for guys who are playing big minutes and making valuable contributions.
One of Dabo's jobs is to make sure that this continues to occur, and we don't have more examples of Mukuba transferring out. This is especially important if Dabo is going to remain steadfast in his refusal to use the portal.
He also needs to retain as many pieces of quality depth as he can. This too is an issue if your only means of replacing them is through high school recruiting.

Clemson is not other schools. We don't have that problem yet, but it's coming. Duke didn't have problems with basketball players turning pro early for a while, but then it hit.
It's just a matter of time before we have to use the portal, but hopefully the NCAA (or whoever is in charge now) will get control of NIL and portal before we have to use it.

should lead the nation more often than not, instead of averaging around 40th in size with nearly every one of those programs we're competing against consistently bringing in more HS players than us every year. Check out the past four recruiting cycles and class sizes and see for yourself. And perhaps take a look at our roster and the significant numbers of Redshirts belonging to all classes.
I don't know where to look but it would be interesting to see how our transfer / quit numbers looked annually before the portal kicked in. Considering our HS recruiting class sizes have been fairly similar in size throughout Dabo's tenure - smaller in numbers but big on talent - I don't know that our portal exits today are much different than the numbers we lost prior.

and 6th in average star rating per player (aka we're 14th overall because we only have 14 commits. Every team 1-13 has more than 14).
I think what the OP may be saying is that we are going to have a small class and with post season portal attrition it may force Dabo's hand to look to the portal to fill spots.

...that recruiting ranking isn't as good as you might think.
We lost lots of depth from "developed" athletes. That means we have to replace and extra 16% of our roster with raw freshmen.
It also means that other teams' recruiting rankings are artificially low because they the portal players and not as many recruits.
That should be a "pump the brakes" moment for those that think recruiting ranking means the same thing it did even 5 years ago.

I clearly get Dabos stance - he doesn’t pay kids from the portal nor does he get into bidding wars for recruits. He wants to pay kids that perform. Makes sense to me. The problem as I see it is we are REALLY limiting ourselves now. That’s the only two ways to bring kids in. Are we going to be stuck with lower tier developmental players because we are getting outbid by Duke for high school kids?
On the surface and deep down his stance makes a whole lot of sense and I applaud it, but sometimes I wonder if he’s living in a fantasy world. If everyone is playing the pay game how can you not expect these kids to take a higher offer? It’s money that can help them and their families. - life changing money for most of them.

I appreciate the way Dabo is doing things. Who knows if his strategy will work or not? College football is evolving monthly, it seems. I could see a future where each team will have enough money to buy one or two top-notch players and then spread the rest of their money among the rest of the team. This would eventually lead to parity among the teams, much like a salary cap. Of course, there are likely to be half a dozen teams who have endless resources, like Oregon or Texas. That creates a scenario like what the Yankees had in baseball for the longest time. Who knows where it will all end? If, when this is all over with, and sanity returns (as it eventually must), I hope my school which I dearly love has not sold its soul to those TV executives and money hungry entities only interested in making a buck off of our good name. Some things aren't worth it to me. Sorry if this is not popular, but I think it is the right way to approach the issue.

We only have 14 commits with just 3.5 months till signing day. Of the top 200 on 247s list of recruits only 6 are uncommitted and none of those guys have us among their list of top schools. We may be looking at a run of 3 stars in the last month to fill out the class.

Go well for Dabo or Clemson FB imho but I admire the Coach for trying to do it the right way from an ethical standpoint but ethics won't win in football games, but should.
Saying, it's Dabo's call and personal future on the line and his calls have Clemson FB still in the hunt, barely.
Next 2 years should tell the story!
