Simple way to stop faking injuries

Sep 2, 2013, 2:45 PM

It is almost impossible for the refs to determine if someone is faking an injury or not, so I propose the following. If any player is injured on the field, stops the normal flow of the game, and/or requires assistance from the medical staff, then they will be required to sit a minimum of 5 plays, or the remainder of the current drive, whichever is shorter.

That would at least make coaches think twice about telling players to lay on the ground so they can catch their breath. Sucks for people who really are injured and could return the next play, but when coaches want to play unethically, then rules must be made to try and stop it.

If a player returns to the game within 3 plays after an injury, charge their team with a time-out.

They'd have to think long and hard about the length of those calls. If you have a deep defense, a guy flopping and coming out for 3 plays won't mean much at all, and 5 plays you could manage around. But no matter how deep you are, if you pull them out for say, the rest of that drive, or a total of five plays including the next drive if the current drive ends in less than five, it's hard to make that sacrifice. And you have to think that that's how those scumbag coaches like Rich would look at it: can I afford to lose this player for that long? They wouldn't start the drive with some inconsequential bench player in, because you don't want to get burned on the first few plays, and the tempo of the offense would prevent you from making substitutions until you signaled one of your guys to flop, and with this proposed rule in place, you'd have to really think about the fact that you'd lose that player for the rest of that drive.

I also think that the offensive players should be exempt from that rule, or at least subject to a less severe version of it, since flopping rarely occurs on offense. The issue here is to try and protect up-tempo offenses.
