some friends. We went and actually had some luck and a lot of fun. Skip is almost a year old and did great. We spent a lot of the afternoon chasing birds and ribbing each other every missed shot. We cleaned our birds and had a few drinks before calling it a day. I'm sure Skip rested well that night. He put in a good days work!!

A good bird dog and a day in the field with him. I know a lot of guys who never got this opportunity and you will never convince them of what they missed. Some laugh when you mention it. I had a great Brittany Spaniel once who loved to go grouse hunting with me up here in the Blue Ridge. I missed those days and I miss ole Pinchot too!

I haven’t seen a wild covey in years.

It breaks my heart to see something that was so distinctly southern disappear. Wild birds vanished when small time agriculture left our area. No habitat + no food + increased nest predation = no birds.
I have the opportunity to hunt wild bobwhites in West Texas yearly. Their numbers are mostly dependent on the rainfall during the spring and summer. Go Tigers.

This! I have 2 very good ones, and I hate the season here just ended, but we now have had some very warm days and nights, and the snakes are back on the move, so better safe than sorry.

Agree. Unless you have had the chance to experience dove, quail or duck hunting, being in the out doors , hanging out with friends while cleaning your future dinner you don’t know what fun is. Hunting your own food and bonding with your friends is awesome.

Sounds like a great day MyfavOrange !

I agree but there is always something special for a guy who has that dog that thinks he has a special guy for an owner,

I’ve had two dogs like that who knew for sure that I was something special! They couldn’t tell me but they didn’t have to. I bet a lot of you have experienced this.

I had an Airedale like that. He cared for me so much that when I would get on the mower to cut the grass he would stand out of the way but never take his eyes off me. He sensed that I was doing a dangerous act and cared enough to watch my every move. In contrast, my sons would jump in the cars and leave knowing I might ask them to help!!!
You can’t beat a good dog and a good wife and some of us were blessed with both.

Nothing makes my heart flutter more than a good point on a covey......cept maybe a pack of redbones coming through the woods in Greeleyville

Grew up in the low country when quail hunting was a religion. Always had dogs - usually pointers. Great days.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I always had setters..but uo here the farms were small

3

Mar 2, 2023, 11:30 AM

And the hunting was more "close quarters"...but in the low country I am positive a dog built more like a greyhound was better for running those big fields.

One of the most beautiful sights in nature is a quail dog in its point! Then to walk those birds up... like the sound of thunder erupting from the covey! Gracious I miss quail hunting! Thanks for sharing!

Man, that’s pretty! Would love to find some wild birds. See plenty of woodcock and dove, nary a quail. I rabbit hunt with beagles a lot in the Piedmont of NC and love that too but, there’s nothing like a covey flush. Have hunted pen raised birds and don’t care to do it again.

The dog looks good but a great dog would come back and bite you on the butt if you missed a bird he pointed!

I was lucky enough to go on my first Quail hunting excursion just this past Sunday. You are right, it was an awesome experience and I cannot wait to go back. If anyone has an open spot on a trip, let me know!

I once helped raise 14,000 birds a year

2

Mar 3, 2023, 9:19 AM

Dumbest birds ever, even more than a chicken. But those dumb birds helped pay off the farm. Not many in the wild these days with predators.

I would deliver about a 100 for a lawyer out of Cola and place them in spots around his farm, in advance of his hunting party. He had a map and time schedule. You would have to drop them in a bag, give them a whirl until they got drunk, then empty them into some brush and back away fast. Only problem was that the red-tailed hawks usually followed me and had a meal after I left.
