If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 8:28 AM

Would it become a disaster for the SEC giving Texas and Oklahoma a recruiting foot hold into the southeast?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hopefully

May 26, 2012, 8:40 AM

...good question. Probably not a disaster, but I doubt any SEC teams would be real enthused about it.

I bet our feathered friends to the south have not thought about that one.

Re: Hopefully

May 26, 2012, 8:47 AM

UT and OU don't need to come to the Southeast to recruit....they have more than enough to choose from out there. I don't see them coming this way when they can recruit local 5 stars (and it's an easier sell b/c the families will be able to see their kids play more often).

The best thing that will happen to Clemson

May 26, 2012, 8:53 AM [ in reply to Re: Hopefully ]

...is that our recruiting will get a boost. For years the SEC has had a significant advantage against us on the recruiting trail (from which South Carolina has benefited greatly). When you tell a recruit they are going to be playing Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Auburn, etc...on national television in front of 80k+ almost every game it matters. Eight out of the last ten National Championships matter. South Carolina (and GA, FL, etc...) have been using this against Clemson pretty successfully.

Playing in the Big XII would definitely change that perception, we'd be on a more level playing field.

Re: The best thing that will happen to Clemson

May 26, 2012, 9:00 AM

The negative is that our local recruiting is hurt by jumping to a midwest conference. Also, we can't use the argument to recruits that SCar will have a difficult time winning a conference championship in the SEC, because our road won't be easy in the Big 12. So I see the recruiting situation, by moving to the Big 12, as a wash.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree 100%.

May 26, 2012, 9:01 AM [ in reply to The best thing that will happen to Clemson ]

It will be great for Clemson. I was thinking more about the Big12 pulling more recruits from states like Alabama, Miss and Louisiana.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree 100%.

May 26, 2012, 9:07 AM

I can see them pulling recruits out of La. LSU has had a practical monopoly forever.....and it shows.

Re: Hopefully

May 26, 2012, 9:01 AM [ in reply to Re: Hopefully ]

wouldn't that be a disaster for y'all more so than us? your the ones that have to beat UT while they're already making way more money than you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 8:41 AM

No. Look at where they're already recruiting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe not but

May 26, 2012, 8:50 AM

It would place the Big12 as a regional broadcasted game in the southeast. Its something to think about anyway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Maybe not but

May 26, 2012, 8:55 AM

You may be right.....I just don't see it. There is a PILE of talent in Texas alone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Maybe not but

May 26, 2012, 1:38 PM [ in reply to Maybe not but ]

How many people in the SE you think are going to watch a Big 12 game over and SEC game? Not many! I don't see adding Clemson as a major TV marketing area. Adding FSU, no! Most of NW Florida is AL and AU and very committed to the SEC. SC has been in the SEC for 20 years now, and I would bet the house most would rather watch SEC matchups more than any. It would be best for Clempson to kiss some a$$, hate to say it, bite their tongues and do whatever SC wants and try to get in the SEC. Because believe me, if they support Clemson that will be the biggest hurdle to jump. If they don't support Clemson I don't see it happening.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Maybe not but

May 26, 2012, 1:49 PM

I am wondering who you are talking about. The HS player will love the offenses in the big12. If you are talking about old fat men then you may be correct.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Carolina will never help us get into the SEC.

May 26, 2012, 1:50 PM [ in reply to Re: Maybe not but ]

And kissing their arses won't do a thing but make us look pitiful. It is what it is. Either we go to the Big 12 or we fade into CFB insignificance. I would choose the Big 12...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Carolina will never help us get into the SEC.

May 26, 2012, 1:56 PM

I don't think they could help or hinder. It would be up to the powers to be in the SEC. LSU, Bama, Auburn, Miss St, Ole Miss and Arkansas would have the most to lose if the Big12 got a foot hold.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

southern schools in the Big 12. And the SEC is now in Texas and Missouri. So, it's a wash.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree to this too.

May 26, 2012, 9:08 AM

My point being with the SEC now having a foot hold in Texas will they give up some of the southeast or try and offer FSU and Clemson to keep their advantage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree to this too.

May 26, 2012, 9:16 AM

SEC teams are not willing to take a paycut to bring FSU and Clemson in. We wouldn't either as an institution or as individuals. So, that's a dead end for us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree to this too.

May 26, 2012, 10:21 AM

If the SEC brought in FSU and Clemson then the Big12 would go after GT, Miami or some other southeastern team.

The SEC opened up the flood gates with the addition of A&M and it will interesting to see where this leads everyone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In the final analysis, it's all about markets and money,

May 26, 2012, 10:27 AM

not recruiting. That's the primary focus; though money impacts recruiting. We are fooling ourselves if we think differently.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 11:05 AM

Schools like Oklahoma and Texas recruit who they want, where they want (though Oklahoma does this to a lesser degree). The addition of FSU and Clemson wouldn't boost their standing with recruits in the Southeast. In my opinion, there are a few schools that can recruit without geographic borders: Southern Cal, Texas, Florida State, Florida, and Alabama.

However, I think going to the Big XII would certainly give Clemson a boost in their ability to recruit in Texas.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Notre Dame is

foothold in Florida as far as the SEC is concerned. Now Georgia is a bigger concern than the state of South Carolina. What you might see is the SEC iinvite GT to make sure no other conference, including the ACC continues to have a presence in Atlanta.

If the SEC got real nervous, they might invite FSU and GT which would be a real disaster for Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It would not be good for them to have a recruiting

May 26, 2012, 1:29 PM

I am not sure if the SEC would ever invite GT back. Just an opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

GT and FSU would be the only ones within the SEC footprint

May 26, 2012, 3:47 PM

that would be invited in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: GT and FSU would be the only ones within the SEC footprint

May 26, 2012, 3:52 PM

You could be correct just to keep the Florida and Ga. region in the SEC. What about Miami?

I think it will happen and just hope Clemson has a seat @ the table.

Its the only way to make all the money brokers happy. Unless you have another way that can happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 'cept it ain't happening. Don't know why some of you haven't

May 26, 2012, 4:12 PM

WRONG. No one in the SEC will take a paycut. PERIOD. You wouldn't as an institution nor individual either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 'cept it ain't happening. Don't know why some of you haven't

May 26, 2012, 4:30 PM

Who said anything about a pay cut? If the playoff with 4 super conferences come about we are talking about a very large pay increase not a cut. Each conference would have 2 divisional playoff games then a conference championship for a spot in the 4 NC games. Wake up and smell the money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Read "Outkick The Coverage"; type that in. Then read about

May 26, 2012, 4:46 PM

Virginia Tech fans wanting in the SEC. maybe then you will understand what's going on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Read "Outkick The Coverage"; type that in. Then read about

May 26, 2012, 8:20 PM

Maybe you should jump into 2012 and see what is going on this year. Last year has gone. VT and everyone else will be listening to what any conference come calling has to offer. If the big12 offers a chance with more money (I don't think they have any deal yet). The big12 could just go ahead and offer many schools to get the jump on the SEC.

Unless you have some kind of inside track on the SEC and Big12 then you are only guessing like the rest of us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That article was written a few days ago. Based on what I'm

May 26, 2012, 8:25 PM

reading, the SEC has its eyes on VT. clemson, FSU and GT to the SEC, according to that article, is unlikely.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ironically, if the SEC felt the need to protect its border,

May 26, 2012, 12:15 PM

FSU and Georgia Tech would be teams 15 and 16 into the SEC, leaving clemson in the cold. The state of Georgia is twice the size of SC. The Atlanta metropolitan area is equal to the entire state of South Carolina. As it is, that's irrelevant, as conference realignment is all about markets for more TV money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No but we'd reap the rewards.***

95% of the players on both teams are from Texas as it is.

I haven't thought about that before.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The best thing the Big12 can do

May 26, 2012, 2:17 PM

is invite FSU, Miami, GT, Clemson and VT. That would make the SEC say what the heck have we started. The SEC throw the first punch and the Big12 could land the knock out punch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The best thing the Big12 can do

May 26, 2012, 3:04 PM

Of course.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 3:12 PM

SEC could care less. In fact they may somewhat encourage it. Slive and the sec are driving this whole thing anyway in case you have not noticed. This would help play into Slive's preference for a 4 team playoff.

Plus, there is no way the Big 12, regardless of whom they add, will ever even remotely displace the SEC in the minds and hearts of most fans and recruits in this part of the country.

To think otherwise is foolish.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 3:27 PM

I am not so sure it was just Slive and not ESPN. The signs are there for the 4 super conferences. If the plan goes down like they want then it will save the bowl games and have the playoff everyone wants. That is why there is no playoff in place today(because of the bowls). If this takes place does it mean the GT-UGA, Clemson-SC and FSU-UF games will end?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 3:32 PM

its basically Slive's plan.(altho the worldwide leader would love it I'm sure).

4 team playoff would make the sec champ game basically a quarter final for the ncaa (as well as champ games for the other 3 conferences)

College football is Mike Slive's world. Everyone else is just living in it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 3:39 PM

You maybe correct. Swoffie thought he had a friend in Slive when they tried to break up the Big12 last year but
when Texas put their foot down Swoffie got thrown out with the trash.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Slive is a very smart man. Swoffie....

May 26, 2012, 4:04 PM

not so much. Look at what has happened to their conferences under their respective leadership. The SEC is the premier conference in the nation and their schools are raking in the dough....the ACC is scrambling to keep members and could very well be reduced to rubble in the next month. I just hope we get out while we have a viable alternative.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Slive is a very smart man. Swoffie....

May 26, 2012, 4:13 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU and Clemson go to the Big12.

May 26, 2012, 4:40 PM

I dont think it will be an issue for a couple of reasons.

The primary threads would be UT and OU getting footholds in the south. THe problem is, neither needs to. They both ahve plenty of talent to choose from already.

The schools that MAY start recruiting the south are going to need several years to make inroads down there (ISU, KU, KSU, maybe Okie State) and none of them are a threat to the big boys in teh SEC. THose teams are going to be going after 3, and maybe some 4 star talent, but not the 5 stars who are going to stay in the South 99 times out of 100.

I think the biggest worry to the SEC is that Clemson and FSU (possibly) would now be in a conference that has considerably more clout than the ACC and will be broadcasting big time games so recruits may see opportunity there for FSU and Clemson. Recruits would be able to travel further from home and see different parts of the country other than the South and once they hear about 6th street in Austin, it's over. Just line up the 5 star recruits for FSU and Clemson that would have otherwise gone to the SEC. (I only kid about this last part, 6th street is pretty freaking awesome though)
