Need Clemson College History Help from the Old School w/pic

Jun 5, 2013, 3:28 PM
MonkMug.jpg(436.4 K)

Does anyone know the importance of the old Clemson College Junior Senior Banquet mugs? Was there an 'official' nickname for them or were these given during a ring ceremony? I dusted off my grandfather's 1959 mug w/ an A&M College ring printed on it and realized that I have never ever ever seen another Clemson Banquet mug in person or in a Clemson history book. I have been looking at this thing for 28 years thinking it was just a commemorative mug. Thanks for the help in advance. I hope the pic works.

Jun 5, 2013, 4:23 PM [ in reply to Re: Unlike certain goof-offs on TigerNet, I have been working ]

that they never had "it" in the first place. Now, they are tripping the light fantastic like a bunch of old school, brain-fried hippies dressed in drag. That's why their "stage" names are Gwen and Bobsie.

I believe that's when they got their class rings

Jun 5, 2013, 4:14 PM

I've heard they used to be awarded in the spring rather than the fall. Other military colleges are similar- West Point has/had something similar called the ring dance.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking. I know the cadets had a big ring ceremony where their dates presented them with their rings underneath a giant class ring. That tradition could have easily been going in 1959 since changing from military happened in 1955. I was thinking it had to be a military tradition bc the only reply I've gotten elsewhere is a guy with his dad's '69 mug. This was about the time that military interest at Clemson hit rock bottom and my dad who started in '74 doesn't recall them.

nope, see my post below. Don't know what they did when it was military.

I would suggest contacting the History Department....

Jun 5, 2013, 4:21 PM

and ask if they can put you in touch with Dr. Reel. I'll guarantee you he knows.

I have two of these 'mugs' on display in my library at home. They were given to me and my date (who weeks later became my wife) at the Jr./ Sr banquet in 1964. Priceless to me.

Clemson is what makes CU so special. I joke about the age of someone like hartins, but I love hearing stories about dear ol Clemson. And of course I'm jealous of all Clemson fans who lived through the '81 season

Look at the mug and you will get your answer. As a 1966 grad, these mugs were given to members of the senior class at the Junior-Senior Banquet on Jr.-Sr. Dance weekend. Not sure when this stopped. Had nothing to do with rings. Back then, when the rings came in we'd get a notice in our mailbox at student PO to come by book store and pick it up. There was no ring ceremony back in those days.

I have my 1970 Junior Senior mug, white with gold trim and an Orange Tiger on it on my dresser top. It's been sitting on my dresser in one house or another for 43 years, or so I think. Not sure how it came to be an object I liked so much, but I do like it.

Now that I think about it, the mug is sort of a silly memento for a 63 year old guy to have sitting out. But I think it'll stay out at least until after the funeral.

Now, for Pete's Sake, I've got to go digging through a trunk full of Clemson paraphenalia to see if I have one.

I have one of these mugs dated 1963 from the Junior Senior banquet. I am a 1964 graduate and got mine as a Junior at that banquet. No ring ceremony back in the day and this mug had nothing to do with a ring ceremony. It was simply a memorabilia item and mine is on display on my bookshelf.
