Why do y’all hate on Myrtle Beach?

I’ve been here going on 15 years. The gonorrhea and syphilis cleared up years ago.
Best food and golf in the state….possibly the southeast.
If you deny that there’s a good chance you haven’t ventured out enough.

I agree with you somewhat that it is not terrible, but it's built for tourists essentially, which means it attracts a lot of people not from here and can be overly crowded. It does have decent restaurants, especially Myrles Inlet, but I prefer the cuisine in the Charleston area more.
If you are looking for a beach with a lot to do in SC, Myrtle Beach is a good spot. If you are looking for anything else, not so much.
Other beaches in SC have a lot more history too. Myrtle Beach became a town essentially 70-80 yrs ago.

The comeback there is that Charleston, which was always a wonderful vacation destination, has been inundated with Yankees moving there. It is not the Charleston of my childhood and I'd argue more crowded than Myrtle most times. I don't understand preferring the food in Charleston. It's so pretentious. I'll take my massive crab leg buffets and calabash seafood.

Then you are going to the wrong places to eat in Charleston. There are plenty of great laid back places to eat here.

Then he’s gonna prefer Myrtle Beach 10 tens out of 10.
Charleston has a way higher quality of restaurant, which is good but sucks sometimes when you want to eat a meal for less than $10 (Myrtle isn’t much better in that regard). I like a lot of food in both myself but they are definitely a different market.

True that. I grew up poor, and hate fancy restaurants. I have to go to Michelin restaurants all the time for work. Give me all the crab legs I want any day. But Charleston also doesn't have many high-end restaurants.

Name me an area of SC and NC that hasn't been inundated with yankees. NC for sure. So much so that the election "experts" can longer predict how the state is going to vote. That's how many and how fast it's changed. You're welcome to come down anytime. Just don't bring your high tax political philosophy with you.
Re: Charleston, lived on James island for a short period. Heard the saying, "In Charleston you're a stranger for 5 minutes but and outsider forever." saw that from time to time.
Re: Beach food, it's been my experience if you want it deep fried, go to Calabash. If you want it broiled or sauted, go to Murrell's Inlet. My sister used to live in Calabash. She told me the reason that everyone is lined up at the Seafood Hut is because they still use lard. No vegetable oil or peanut oil there. Everything tastes better with pig fat!

Having been to MB hundreds of times . . . you just have to go of the beaten path to avoid the majority of tourists. Sometimes I am a tourist, but haVE BEEN THERE ENOUGH TO know where TO GO. It's no difficult...at all.

Traffic, violence caused by gangs, overcrowding, long lines at certain places, demolition of the pavilion and continual housing development that the infrastructure cannot handle. The Myrtle Beach that we knew as kids has been long gone.

Yeah, long gone since the mid 70s. Only go there for HS classmate golf outings staying/playing at Legends or Barefoot Landing. Beach activity trips confined to Ocean Isle, Oak Island or south of MB at Litchfield.

Grew up going to Myrtle Beach every year when I was a kid and loved it. I loved the pavilion, playing putt putt and going to the gay dolphin (I’m a woman 😊). When I was older I loved cruising the boulevard and partying. Now we go to Hilton Head most of the time but honestly I just don’t think the beaches in SC are pretty. I prefer the gulf coast in Florida but we don’t want to drive that far sometimes and don’t fly because we don’t want to rent a car.

I’ve never seen the seaweed where we go in Florida (Anna Maria Island/Longboat Key) near Sarasota. The water and beaches are beautiful and not crowded at Longboat Key. I agree about HHI being less interesting for kids than Myrtle Beach. If they ever get a taste of Myrtle beach 1st they will think Hilton Head is boring. Mine did!

Love Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Bradenton Area. Good food, great bars, awesome uncrowded (most of the time) beaches. Moose Lodge on the beach = great beach, cheap drinks, good friendly folks. North of Myrtle or south of Myrtle not bad but Myrtle should be off limits to sane people and families. Have not been in years and if it ever changes, I'll not know it.

It has changed. They’ve updated the area around the Bowery right in the heart of Myrtle Beach.
Plus you’ve now got the Market Common which is an upscale area with lots to do and eat in the old Air Force base.

Places like Crazy Zacks, the Spanish Galleon, Fat Harolds, The Pad, 2001 VIP, Studebaker's, Duffy's Tavern, The Bowery, and the Afterdeck were all great night spots.
The whole place started going to He!! in a hand basket when they closed the Pavilion and started opening strip clubs up and down Kings Highway.

I stay in N.myrtle twice a yr and enjoy it every time. I try to stay away from the strip, but occasionally take the kids to the boardwalk for ice cream and arcades. I'm not seeing all the gangs and violence, but then again I don't really stay out late with that crowd. I sip on rum all day and avoid the Yankees. That's my only advice. Oh,and try flamingos, great food!

I started going to MB 60-70 yrs ago as a kid from Roanoke, VA. We went there as a family for years. It was a great place for kids. Even as a teen in Spartanburg, SC we went there. In fact the post HS graduation tradition was to go to MB. It was fun then too. Went there for years afterwards as well and took my kids there too. But as it grew and I grew older I started gravitating to less crowded places. Hilton Head. But it too became more and more crowded. As the family has spread out and we are older we go to Kiawah Island. My son has a time share in N. MB and his kids enjoy going there. Thinks change people change. I’m sure the % of beer drinking, smoking, red necks is the same as it was 50 years ago. Just like in the Pigeon Forge area near Dollywood. Nothing wrong with red necks mind you. Their money is the same as mine.

Too loud, too crowded, too many drunks, too many out of control kids, too many druggies and too many obnoxious bikers.
I prefer a quiet beach well after all the kids have gone back to school.
And, I don’t play golf. Don’t see why you go out in the heat of day and whack a little ball with a crooked stick. Go and try on find said ball. And then take another crooked stick and whack it again. No wonder golfers get mad, frustrated and break their clubs.

It’s a sport I can play competitively until I die. Plus it gives me 4-5 hours multiple times a week to just relax and forget about the cruel world we live in.
Not to mention golf courses are typically beautifully landscaped areas to be enjoyed on nice weather days.
Shocks me that more people don’t take it up.

I’m a Hyannis Port man myself!!!
Please take this post with a grain of slaw.
I did go to the Massachusetts coast once and it was not bad but certainly not close to the Carolina beaches. If you have never been to Newport you might put it on your to do list. Now that is how the other half lived. The beach is a rock cliff!
For years I attended the “Tall Ships Festival” on the east coast and that was always a treat

Being originally from SC for the first 20 years of my life, and living in NJ/NYC the last 12, and hearing so many people from up here talking about how much they love Myrtle Beach basically tells me it is a ########. NJ people are trash period.. 100 times out of 10 I'll take our rednecks over NJ trash..
Now, I used to vacation to Litchfield and Pawleys when I was younger, than we started going to Folly. My brother now lives on James, so I would say I prefer Charleston beaches now. Went to Citadel first year of college and did some stints to the Citadel beach house on Sullivans several times as well.

I have always been surprised at the amount of people from the north east that come here.
I made it to Colorado for the first time last year at 35. Skied at Keystone and Breckenridge. Can’t wait to go back.

I’ve been here going on 15 years. The gonorrhea and syphilis cleared up years ago.
Best food and golf in the state….possibly the southeast.
If you deny that there’s a good chance you haven’t ventured out enough.
Do yourself a favor and add about 3 more hours to your trip by driving to the gulf coast of Florida.

Myrtle beach turned into thug fest every year with the Memorial Day bike week. Then it was known as Murder Beach.

When I was a kid, more than half a century ago, I liked Myrtle Beach from a distance. It was a high school/college glamorous sort of place with a ton of hotels and motels, bars, places to eat and fairly nice entertainment. Guys who got summer jobs working in MB were to be envied. I had some nice times there. If your idea of a great place at the beach was an airstream or RV parked at one of the big campgrounds, it was and still is hard to top Myrtle Beach. Condos sprang up every open block in MB.
Somewhere along the way a nice ambiance of the sort available at Wild Dunes, Hilton Head, Seabrook, and so forth started to look a lot better to me. A place with a pool, nice beach, a few golf options and so forth began to have more appeal to me than urban MB. Eventually the sort of beach place like Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Edisto, Kiawah, Seabrook and such just seemed much better.
We bought a house on Oak Island NC about an hour from North Myrtle Beach and an easy drive from home in Charlotte. From time to time I drive from Oak Island I drive down there for a look/see. Now the whole urban MB area from near the North Carolina line of Garden City is simply way too urban, too commercialized and frankly unattractive to me. If you live in Ohio, MB is a great place to get to quickly with better weather than back home. If you want a 5 day golf outing with 20 guys, MB remains very attractive.

Love not hate to get in the gate!

I loved going to Oceanside Village between Garden City & Surfside as a kid. I loved South Myrtle Beach from 3rd avenue to 29th Avenue south. I went to Coastal Carolina College so I could be on the beach, lifeguarded on the beach for 5 summers(could have done it the last 37 years) and visited my family’s home in North Myrtle for many trips while my kids where young. It is a tourist area but locals have and know their places that keep it home. I love it minus Bike week, Memorial Day weekend & July fourth week. Those were not a problem 20 years ago. I still consider Horry County my home away from home. I’ve met so many awesome people from up north and all over the world there. Clemson still has tons of fans there too!
Me & my girls twenty some years ago 😀

Love Myrtle Beach still!

Myrtle beach proper is a dumpster fire. Its all geared towards college drunks and druggies. At least get up towards North Myrtle to get some sense of a family atmosphere.
