I was a big Muhammad Ali fan as a kid in the 70s

I was too young to know much about all the earlier political stuff and my older brother was a big fan too.I love to watch different versions of Ali and his corner man Bundini Brown doin " Float like a butterfly ".They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery .I think it would be realcool for Dabo to have a rhyming partner to do this with after games.Any particular player you would chose to join Dabo? Float like a butterfly , sting like a bee ! The hands can't hit what the eyes can't see !

While he may be the greatest boxer of all time, which he bragged about, he refused to serve his country in the military. No respect for him at all.

I respect him. It was Vietnam. We had no business in Nam. That would be like a Russian soldier refusing to fight in Ukraine right now. History has proven in right on many levels.

Take a look at how he treated Joe Frazier, or maybe you are a fan of someone calling an opponent a "gorilla" or an "Uncle Tom". Sure, he apologized for these remarks many many years later but doesn't change that he said it, loudly, frequently and proudly for a long time. Great fighter, scumbag human being despite the media attempting to lionize him for hating his own country (which the media hates as well).

He called Frazier that because he was trying to get inside his head before they fought. Frazier wouldn't talk about civil rights. They became great friends. Also, he didn't hate his own country. He was "fighting" for civil rights. White people were his oppressors at the time. The guy was was born in 1942 in Kentucky. Context matters.
"My enemy is the white people, not Viet Cong or Chinese or Japanese. You my opposer when I want freedom. You my opposer when I want justice. You my opposer when I want equality. You won't even stand up for me in America for my religious beliefs—and you want me to go somewhere and fight, but you won't even stand up for me here at home?"
—Muhammad Ali to a crowd of college students during his exile from boxing[70]

He talked smack to everyone. He used to threaten to pull Howard Cosell's toupe' off. White folks tended not to like him because he called out racism and didn't mince words. They tended to dislike rich Black folks, for some reason, a man standing up for his rights threatened them.
He was called the most vile, racist things by the folks who didn't like him. I think he wasn't liked because he didn't go along to get along like Joe Louis did. In my little elementary school all of the Black kids were pulling for Ali and all of the White kids were pulling for Frazier.
I liked him because he didn't take $h!t from anyone and could back it up.
It's funny how White folks love their Black stars while they smile, shuffle and say yassuh, but stand up for what they think is right? Then they use all the veiled racism you can think of.
I didn't know him personally so I can't attest to his being a scumbag.
By the way, I'm from Beaufort, I know some of Joe's relatives, he's remembered fondly around here.

I didn't believe in the Viet Nam war era but I was in the draft. I got my physical but my draft lottery number did not come up so I was sparred. However, even though I was totally against the war, I would have served my country. Ali used religion to keep himself out of military duty. You have your opinion, I have mine. One thing is for sure, Lyndon Johnson had a lot of blood on his hands.

Johnson, Kennedy, Eisenhower and Nixon had blood on their hands, as did the French.
We did get the John Wayne Green Beret movie out of it though....
and some awesome music.

There are many many things in my life which could be put in a negative context... I'm sure we all do. Suffices to say he had his reasons... in my opinion, he was still "The Greatest"!!!
