I was at the game tonight, and I have to be honest
Sep 18, 2022, 12:14 AM

|
I was born in 1990. I attended my first Clemson game at 9 months old and have attended home games every season since. I was there for the Hatfield years. Brandon Streeter at QB. Nealon Greene. Tommy over Bobby in the Valley. Reggie Merriweather. I've seen Clemson football at both its lowest and highest, and everything in between.
What I witnessed tonight in the Valley was downright jarring. Cheerleaders not even attempting to lead chants. Nobody being responsive to other fan's attempts. Half the hill was empty and the other half seemed disinterested. The people in front of us brought their kids and told us we were cheering too loudly. The people behind us asked if I could sit down so they could see the game (both in their 40s). Huge percentage of fans never returned after halftime.
At this point it seems the team is a representation of our fanbase and not the other way around. We have become Charmin soft.

Students weren’t really able to get too in too it with mom and dad sitting next to them, and the parents are probably wiped with the late game and thinking about the long drive back to New Jersey tomorrow.

This actually the reasoning. It was also probably not the best choice to make the parent weekend game against La Tech a night game.

I agree not the best combination but I’m not sure those two decisions (Parents’ weekend and programming for ACC Network) are able to be coordinated in a way to prevent it. I may be wrong but I believe parents weekend is chosen long before the school knows what time the game will be played. To your main point, it’s a bad combo for a night game and lively crowd.

Come on now, give us Jersey folks a break! And you want to talk about accents?!? I don't know where you're from but I suspect your accent wouldn't fit in up in Jersey but don't believe they'd say it makes them vomit. Try being a bit more open minded maybe?

This is not a top 5 team. I can promise you that. I don’t think this is a top 15 team either. Call me coot, whatever I bleed Orange but this is not a complete team and the talent isn’t what it was. Possibly 4 loss team if this D and WR don’t step up. O line is atrocious. A good team would beat Clemson by 21 points or better.

Wow!! I even commented tonight that the Valley looked flat. The camera panned to the crowed on a big third down and I was so surprised to see people sitting. I remember going to games and standing the entire time. I’d lose my voice from yelling so much. They valley used to be feared among visiting teams. It’s no longer that way.

past 40 years, and continued to go during the 20 year drought, have been or are being replaced by fans who just want to experience the tailgate part of game day. Everybody says we should stop the pass out system, but I think it is too late for that. Fans leave at halftime and watch the 2nd half on their satellite system with a 75 inch hanging above their truck. They are no longer interested in coming back in anyway. And it doesn't just happen for the pissant teams. If they were telling you not to cheer so loud,I would have told them to take their kids to the library,it's plenty quiet there.

Our expectations are not too high.
Look at the talent that this team has. Look at our recruiting. Then look at the recruiting and the talent of these teams that we have been playing so far this season. It’s men among boys on the football field. We are playing down to their level. The players and coaches!
Those guys in Vegas know what they’re doing. When you’re consistently struggling to get even close to the point spread, which we haven’t been doing, we didn’t come close to covering the point spread last night. When you’re not getting close something is wrong. And those guys aren’t emotional. Those guys don’t have expectations. And their track record is phenomenal. It actually never ceases to amaze me how accurate their pointspreads are and when you are consistently well below the pointspread you are under achieving.
Every game this year at times we have struggled on both sides of the ball. If you can’t see what’s going on I can’t help you.
I can tell you this much, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, they aren’t struggling to beat teams that they should be beating.

I think you may be misremembering the “good old days”. Yes, Death Valley has often been really loud for good, competitive games, but the crowd always seemed a bit flat for these early season games that are supposed to be cupcakes. I’ve been going to games for over 30 years and it seems this conversation comes up every year at the beginning of the season. We simply tend to remember the great experiences much more so than the average ones.

You are taking something really personal that's just silly, the crowd is never all that into it for these cupcake games, never has been. When ACC teams start coming to town it will be loud. Honestly it was pretty loud Saturday night considering it was just la tech.

Umm no. There is perspective though. If we are looking flat and playing poorly vs Ltech in game 3, don't expect people to get excited or to scream their butts off in desperation. The fans are smart. The scream when its exciting, a big play, needing a stop, etc etc. There wasn't much to scream about in a positive way during the first half.

It is a two way street. The crowd noise energizes the players. Didn’t you see KJ and Ruke asking for support?? I for one don’t wait for something to happen to make noise. I like to think my contribution to the atmosphere givethe players energy and I do my job from the start and throughout the game. What do you say if it appears a player “takes a play off”? We know what Dabo said about players loafing last week. I say the same goes for fans.

If they stayed to watch the second half. The area around us cleared out a lot at halftime. But as I said before there were a lot of different faces in the crowd last night and many of them were obviously not DV regulars. I think that may be part of the atmosphere issue last night. A lot of fans will sell their tickets to a night game against a cupcake opponent because of the late hours and travel. These people will show up for the big games and they know how to make DV loud. The overall product ended up a 48-20 winner. That’s what this fans eyes saw.

The light show was cool during pregame and during the 4th quarter hype video. Finally saw some of the old cheers coming out of the student section and an attempt or two at the wave.
Each year is going to be different, but I certainly don't think Clemson fans are soft or disinterested.

The magic is gone. But this is what we asked for. The prez wants our fans to kiss opposing fans azzes. We want to be welcoming. The music is really quite bad. I did like the new intro and 4th quarter video and the music after it. It got the fans hyped. Why aren’t we turning off the lights after touchdowns?? They do it at the soccer games and it’s awesome. Playing the band through the loudspeakers is still awful and embarrassing. The new video board is cool but all anyone wants to do now is watch the damm cameraman and “be on TV”. Look at me! Look at me! It’s kind of sad and pathetic. The cheerleaders actually started South stands - Clemson! North stands - Tigers! I’ve always liked that chant and feel like it hasn’t been done in years for some reason.

We have been sitting in section C for years. The cheerleaders try to do that chant EVERY game. The fans just aren’t paying attention and it doesn’t get going. I was really happy to see them split up and put up signs to spell C. L. E. M. S. O. N. around the stadium. They try to do that every game too but the only people that can hear them are the students and maybe sections C and D when they just stay in front of the student section and start it there. I hope they keep doing what they did last night. The fan response was much better.

It is a two way street. The crowd noise energizes the players. Didn’t you see KJ and Ruke asking for support in there first half?? I for one don’t wait for something to happen to make noise. I like to think my contribution to the atmosphere gives the players additional energy and I do my job from the start and throughout the game. What do you say if it appears a player “takes a play off”? We know what Dabo said about players loafing last week. I say the same goes for fans.

watching on TV because they have simply been priced out. Crowd now is different than when I was a kid in the 70s/80s. Most come now for the social aspect and status. To each their own since they can afford it. Wish I could, but I’ll still pull with all my might for as long as I can(until NIL, etc ruins it all).

I and many others I know attended wayyy more games (sometimes all of them - home and away) when we were 3-8, 5-6, 8-4, etc. than we do now.
The bandwagon fans really came in and inflated the prices around the same time the at-home experience has improved.

Right, you hit the nail on the head. Had season tickets for about 40 years but the fans have changed as has the atmosphere. I gave up my tickets when the seat tax was started. Just too much time and money for too few competitive games. The younger generation has many other interests besides sitting at a football game. In the best of times from a fan base support (80's) the stadium was packed and very few of the games were on TV. We cursed and dreaded TV games because of the commercial delays. Now it is just one big commercial money grab. It's a turn off. I used to park for free and walk 10 minutes to the game in the 80's with a full house. Now I am looking at $75-$100 for parking. To watch Furman. Times have changed, the games take forever, many core fans are sitting at home and those that attend have other interests. For better or worse this is the new normal.

Family will be attending Homecoming festivities, but more than likely not attending the game.
$100+ for a 5 and 7 yr old who will only last first quarter or maybe half isn't worth it.
There is a sticky on here dedicated to ticket scammers....
Agreed that to each their own and if they wanna pay and just chill or not cheer loud or whatever, that's for them to decide.

For me, I make noise on every defensive play for the most part. Then on big plays for the offense. This is what makes a home field advantage.

Exactly. As I said before. Death Valley has always been loud and the concrete and aluminum don’t make a sound. It only happens if we make it happen. My kids were raised that if you can talk on Tuesday you didn’t try hard enough.

You can’t get in on the north side with student tickets and with them cutting off the ability to walk across, half of the hill is full and the other half empty. Surprised you don’t remember this but then again 20 years ago our team was trash

I agree about the fans. I graduated in 1984 so I was a sophomore during the 81 championship year. There is a group of people around me who have jumped on board and we make a lot of noise. And yes, there were quite a few people who were making their maybe one game a year appearance (Yankees no surprise there) that complained about us standing and yelling. I know they are not regulars because we have been in these same seats for years and we know who actually holds the season tickets for those seats and they were not there last night. The defense was asking for crowd help all night and the crowd response was spotty at best. If everyone that gets on here and spouts how much better they could coach blah blah blah would make that much noise in the stadium it would help. That is our job as fans, not telling Dabo how to run his team. I always say DV has a reputation as a loud stadium but the concrete and aluminum don’t make a sound. That is our job as fans. We as fans are going to get out of it what we put into it.
The one thing I did like was that the cheerleaders spread out around the field and held up signs to get the fans to spell T. I. G. E. R. S. They have been trying to do that for years but just from their spot in front of the student section and it couldn’t get going. This was by far the best effort for that I have seen in a long time and the crowd responded.

When the team is playing championship football they will get championship fans. Before we started winning the school was letting in to many out of state students and foreign students and that was the problem. The problem is the quality on the field.
I’ll go a step further and say I can’t even watch the whole thing at home. They have been the slowest, most boring games I’ve ever seen. There is no star on the team to cheer like TL, Sammy, Nuke, Travis that is going to put on a show like Sammy at Maryland or Travis against Louisville. Shipley tries but he’s just an above average player on a below average team. I’m hoping Williams and Randall are going to be the deal. The defense is the walking definition of a shoulder shrug. And this is the slowest offense I’ve ever seen. We are probably averaging what 44 plays a game? We were running 90-100 plays at one point with the chad. Yeah it was a lot of hurry up and punt but when it was working and scoring it was invigorating to watch. I think I’m the end we either bring in experienced coaches and make them analyst to help the O and D cords or they are out. It won’t be this year but before it turns around one of the things will need to happen. They just don’t have it.

We actually did 74 plays last night, 59 against Furman, and 78 against GT. SO we are playing higher tempo than last year, where our average was in the low 60s. But point taken. It's definitely not what we had under Chad, or even Jeff Scott. In the 2015 national championship, we ran 85 plays and in 2016, 99.
These are our years' play averages:
2014: 76 2015: 81 2016: 81 2017: 75 2018: 72 2019: 75 2020: 75 2021: 68 2022: 69

I’m a student and sat in the upper deck last night. We have the most spoiled fan base in the entire country and I hate it. Nobody was loud, everybody was on the Bench DJ train if there was an incomplete pass, and I really don’t know if there will be people interested enough to stay the whole time against actual good competition

There are a lot of reasons.
College football is falling significantly in popularity. Game attendance nationwide has fallen 9% since 2013, and it's been steady. I think this has been because of: (1) NIL (people liked college because these were amateurs playing on emotion, and they're now largely just worse professional athletes); (2) sports betting and fantasy in the NFL (people have limited free time and a lot are choosing the higher stakes League with more infrastructure); (3) political activism among athletes causing viewers to tune out across Leagues; (4) covid and changing priorities (I think concern about concussions, both because some people feel guilty (which I don't get because they do it voluntarily) and because of safety rules "softening" the game).
Clemson has backed away from much of what made it such a great gameday experience, especially the changes to the balloons and the hill attendance, which is what made Clemson so unique.
Improving technology has caused a lot of people to prefer staying home. If you're interested in the game itself, rather than as a social function, you get a better experience watching from home, and save a couple hundred bucks.
I do think Clemson is a victim of its own success. For years, we were told that "best" is the standard. It seems apathy has set in to some extent and it has bled into the fans. So I still tend to think these professional athletes and coaches are the cause of the apathy, rather than a result.

There are only 2 reasons why people aren't as inclined to go.
1. By far the top reason. It is that people have amazing set ups at home. There really is no need to go to the game to have a good experience. You might even have a better one at home. You would have to pay me to drive 6 hours to watch a game, get a hotel, etc etc. I would have to live across the street to want to go to a game.
2. They don't want to spend the money when overall it can be a huge pain in the butt. You can get all games at home.

The TV commercials kill the flow of the game. I think their are 10 things that are more interesting on their cell phone than waiting for lengthy TV timeouts. Technology and TV have moved on and it's all just a commercialized money grab. The team is average and watching some of the walk ons play is painful for me. When the fans were rabid in the 80' very few games were televised and there were no cell phones. Times have changed and if the games are boring people will move on with other activities that are more fulfilling.

You were NOT there for the worst years of Clemson football. All you know are the glory years of winning records. You did not experience the mid 70s. That said, there was plenty of school spirit during those losing years. Even during the 2-9 1975 season.

For what it is worth I graduated from Clemson and have been going to games for over 55 years. I have season tickets.
The new scoreboard and sound usage is a distraction. It is for some media geek's and non-sports perons's idea of entertainment which takes away from FOOTBALL. The people making these decisions and operating these systems evidently don't know why the fans are there and what pays the bills. It is all about glitz, gimmicks and short term distraction. These systems don't help the team or home football fan's experience, or the team's efforts. The music is too loud and plays up to the second the opposing team breaks the huddle. The fans can't cheer because they can't hear themselves for the music. The opposing team doesn't hear the deafening cheers because there is none. It is actually quieter because of the media distractions. STOP the crap while the other team is huddling so the crowd can cheer and make NOISE! And, the band needs to do the same thing. Let the fans cheer at home! Dabo, get this under control. The home games should be inspirational and motivating for the Clemson player and fans; and, fearful and distracting for the opposing team. Maybe the new scoreboard and sound system will be broken for the next game, or something will change. Tiger band help by allowing fans to get the cheering going ... and then join in to add to the noise. I am not a fan of the new scoreboard layout, text size, arrangement and distractions... It is not now a $20 million enhancement, but it is a distraction for the Clemson fans and players, and an enhancement for the opposing teams. If the new media crap is for short attention span young people who want the media glitz of Tik-Tok, Instagram, Facebook, special effects and non-football content then it is succeeding.

If my post proved your point, you are easy. Toughen up buddy.
We have a darn good team and a great program.
Clemson is a developmental program. We will be better on Tuesday then we were on Monday. We will be better in October than we were in September. Time will tell, but we might go from a darn good team to a great team by the end of this year.
In the meantime don’t let the fans sitting around you get your panties up in a wad. Enjoy the game. Be loud.

You lost my attention with 1990. You’re an instant gratification little fella that wants his way right now and you know very little and far less than you think you do. Oh, and who cares if you were at the game? I can tell more on the tube and my remote than your know-it-all nerdy self can tell because you are clueless as what to even look for in a game. I’d be willing to trade ya for Dabo just any ole time, dweeb. So, would about 100 other college football programs. Stop crying so much, it’s embarrassing to Clemson

Seriously? It was an awesome atmosphere Saturday night considering it was a game against Louisiana tech. Those early cupcake games are always very lackadaisical atmosphere, people just don't get super into them because the game's not really in doubt. Even when it was 13 to 6 at halftime everyone knew that Clemson was going to win by 20 plus when it was all said and done. They also did more organized chairs than in the first game, like spelling out Clemson around the stadium. Some of y'all are blinded by nostalgia to the point that you think that our current students are useless and nobody cheers anymore and that's just stupid.

...and an 8p game. I was amongst the horde that was partying since noon. Multiple tailgates to attend, hot sun, overexertion, etc. Im not saying it was right, but people were tired by the half.
I think you will see a much more dedicated crowd at NCSU game.
