sorry, but Steve Fuller is still the best QB in CU history

and it is simply mind-boggling to see this topic discussed over and over, and Fuller is almost an afterthought. A couple of us old farts will bring him up, but most people here are arguing about Whitehurst, Dantzler & Boyd. Are you kidding me? Yes, all of those guys had (are having) really good careers, but Fuller is still head-and-shoulders above them all.
If you're reaching for the keyboard to start posting stats... don't even bother. All passing stats, offensive records, etc, are bound to get crushed nowadays. Fuller played in a ball-control, option offense in which the running game was featured. And in an era when teams actually played defense. Forget all the statistics and look at the big picture.
1) Fuller led Clemson to an 11-1 record and #6 ranking in the 1978 final AP poll.
2) 1978 AP All American, and finished 6th in the Heisman Trophy voting.
3) 1st round NFL draft pick.
4) Played 7 years in the NFL and had 5 starts for the 1985 Chicago Bears that won the Super Bowl.
####, those 4 right there will do for starters. Y'all let me know when another Clemson QB does any of that. But I won't wait up.

not even close.....too many folks think Clemson football started in the BCS era because that's as far back as they go.....Fuller was hands down the best QB we've ever had and the best pure athlete at that position bar none....

i'm glad the younger folks have grown up Tiger fans...what i don't like is how many of them have no concept of history....my first memory is '77, my first game was ND in DV when Montana, Browner and McAfee broke our hearts...having said that, i learned about Fred Cone, Buddy Gore, Charlie Waters, Wayne Mass, Banks, etc. because i fell in love with the Tigers and wanted to know. I get irritated talking Clemson football with young folks who know about '81 but when you talk about Jeff Bryant, Ed McDaniel, Wesley McFadden, Wayne Simmons, Ashley Sheppard, etc. they have no idea who you're talking about...and so many don't even want to know. They've heard of Levon, Dawk, Jerry Butler, Perry Tuttle, etc. because of NFL fame or just the "name" that they have with Clemson folks....but you mention Jeff Bryant and they are clueless....he started for 4 years and saved our undefeated season against UNC when he fell on the lateral.....#99 is a Clemson HOFer and in my opinion, one of the three best DL i ever saw wear the Paw in my lifetime...AND played 12 years with the Seahawks....just an example...i just wish more of them would read the history more, that's all....the '78 team would have given the '81 team a run for its money and anyone who saw them play would probably agree.....Jim Stuckey is another one....what a beast #83 was and has two SB rings with the 49ers....

The State Headline "Fuller, Butler Strike. Sink U.S.C. 31-27." My First Clemson vs. USuC game. We scored with about a 1:47 left in the game. I think we were up 17-0 at the half. The Coots went ahead 27-24 and then Fuller hit Butler. #88 was Jonnathon Brooks and #20 for the Coots, I forget his name, played in the NFL for the Patriots. One of the best games I've ever seen. The only other Clemson USuC game I've seen at the dead cockroach, was the 45-0 smack down in 1989. Coach Ford's last regular season game as the Tiger's head coach.

on closed circuit TV going nuts when Butler hauled that one in on Fuller's roll out pass.....i'm born and raised in Columbia, could see WB's lights from my back yard and despise them as much now as i did as a kid.....Jonathan Brooks was #84 if i remember correctly, i got his belt and mouthpiece from him on the DV field after the ND game in '77....he was a hell of a DE/LB for us....#20 for the Chickens was either Mark Sanford or Bill Currier, one of the two....both good DB's for them who both played for the Pats if i'm not mistaken.....we were up 17-0 at the half and i was about sick to my stomach then the drive started and my 9 year old self was out of my mind with my uncle right in front of Chicken fans in garnet blazers and ties watching their world collapse.....good times.

Brooks. The coot was Mark Sanford. I have a white Tiger Rag that Jonathan Brooks autographed for me in 78' At the 77'Clemson vs.USuC game, I was 10 years old. I was sitting on the 45 yard line on the Coot side. I went to the game with my next door neighbor who was a big coot fan. I remember after Butler made The Catch, some old, drunk, fat Woman, Carolina fan gets in my face and yells "Go to Hell Clemson." With out missing a beat I yelled back at her " We ain't going to hell. We are going to the Gator Bowl." You could have heard a pen drop.

i was at the Carolina Coliseum again in '79 when the Chicken punter, Jay Feltz (who wore short pants/cut offs) kicked the 84 yard punt that pinned us and Marvin Sims absolutely shredded their D up the middle all the way down the field and Lott couldn't complete the pass to beat them.....i was sick to my stomach and a Chicken fan, about 50 years old, spilled a mixed drink all over me while jumping up and down and my uncle grabbed him by the tie and said, "you may have just beat our ### but if you don't apologize to my nephew right now i'm going to beat YOUR ###"....i wanted to punch him out myself....i was at the '78 Chicken game in DV where we drilled them and Rogers into the turf all day.....what i'd do to go back to those days man.....

That is right in my wheelhouse. I cut my teeth with those fellows. Man, it brings back memories. Some of the very best times in Clemson football. Back when the conference meant something.
Playing against famous Amos Lawrence, Lawrence Taylor and keeping "Chicken George " AND "Hershel Walker out of the Clemson endzone.
I developed a personal relationship with Cliff Austin and had great relationships with William Perry, Jim Stuckey, and others as a student.

of my childhood as a young man in Columbia who had orange and purple blood running while surrounded by Chicken fans at school and in my family....my uncle was a '56 Clemson grad and him and my Pop (a lifelong ND fan from NJ) took me to DV starting in '77 and i idolized those guys.....playing against Charlie Wysocki at Maryland, Montana at ND, watching our homeboy from Cayce Jim Stuckey living in the opposition's backfield, Terry Kinard patrolling the secondary like a defensive QB/wizard, Jeff Bryant seeming to have a million tackles for loss, THE JUDGE (in my opinion, the best football player i've ever seen in a Paw) make hit after hit, Randy Scott and Bubba Brown run all over the field, Danny Tripplett and Mark Heniford play OLB and DE at about 195 lbs. and drill folks....i could go on and on....we WILL return to that level of ball very soon....i can sense it....those of us who remember that relentless D and pounding OL can sense it coming back....and i'll feel like a kid again....

The ACC Had 7 Teams In 1978....Much easier schedule
Nov 15, 2012, 7:00 AM
[ in reply to it is their loss.... ] |
|
GT joined in 78 but wasn't on the schedule.....Also, the ACC was Horrible from top to bottom for the most part. Maryland and NC State were the only other teams in the ACC with a winning record:
Uva: 2-9 Duke: 4-7 NC St: 9-3 Wake: 1-10 UNC: 5-6 UMd: 9-3
VT was a frequent easy win on our schedule as was South Carolina. UGA was the 800 pound gorilla that was our gold standard. Even Ohio State was only a 7 win team.....
I am not saying this to bash Fuller....I watched him and thought he was great and brought Clemson back to a great era......BUT Tajh is a better QB. (I didn't say greater)..
The ACC has 5 and soon to be 7 more teams than 1978 and most are far better than the 1978 ACC. Even South Carolina is a tough game now.
Tajh is facing much tougher defenses, running a far more sophisticated offense and his path to victory is much more difficult than Fuller......
Now, without Fuller and his accomplishments, I don't think we would be where we are and he gets the "Great" nod..........But, Tajh is better IMO

Total Respect for all of you that grew up in those times and experienced all of it first hand. That being said, please remember that when everyone says that we younger folks "have no history" that's a common thing. I don't expect people who grew up in the 70's to wax poetic about the 50' and 60's. Why should the folk growing up in the 90's and 00's do any more for the 70's and 80's? Like I said, the times and everyone who was there will always have my respect, but my attention will always be directed toward the last decade and now, the times that I am here to see.

Let me qualify myself , I was on the Hill in 1978 (?) when Joe Montanna Vegas Ferguson and Ross Browner came back and squeaked out a victory.
I remember all those games . ..Mack truck, Lester Brown , Stan Rome ( might be getting some of them mixed up , old).
You might be right about Fuller. Whitehurst has hung in there a while holding a clipboard in the NFL.
I personally liked Cullen Harpers play.
but Homer Jordon brought home the grand prize. I will never forget him running around the swealtering Orange Bowl.

Steve was the man. He is the first Clemson QB that really remember growing up. He was my hero and I have several of his autographs from games and jamborees. I could not argue with you at all, although it is hard to compare different eras. Tajh had done a helluva job, and if he stays one more year, he could end up taking the title from Steve. I bet Tajh would beat Steve in singing.......remember the Super Bowl Shuffle...

I've only watched Clemson football since 2002, so I'm not going to pretend like I know everything, but if Tajh completely destory's every passing record with only 2 years under him, think what will happen his 3rd year. At that rate it doesn't matter what system you run, you're a #### good QB. Other than the VT game, GT was the worse he looked this season and he almost had 400 yards passing. Everyone keep in mind I'm not bashing Fuller at all, but just saying Tajh deserves to be mentioned with our greatest.

Boyd has a chance to equal and possibly surpass all those stats you posted, esp if he comes back next year. Plus, shattering virtually every Clemson passing record in existence.
