I still hate that we're in shotgun on 3rd or 4th and short

as well as the goal line. We were great at it with Boyd 2yrs ago because he always kept it which gave us an extra blocker and he was a tank. Last year, we generally handed the ball off which eliminated the extra blocker and we were absolutely horrible in those situations. It's worked okay doing that way in the first 2 games, but that was against lesser competition. At a minimum I hope Scelliott aren't stubborn with it like Chad was. I couldn't understand why we wouldn't try something different once we realized early last year that this type of play didn't work.

The formation has little relevance. The key is blocking. If the OL gets a push the play is a success if the DL is in the backfield immediately the play will not work regardless of formation.

I thought this was common knowledge...

So why give up the extra yardage in shotgun formation

Sep 14, 2015, 12:37 AM

to begin with when you need a just a yard or especially on the goal line. Get under center and push it over. Always seems like you are making it harder to me. Never understood it. Seems like you see a team every week lose a game at the end doing that nonsense. Heard someone call it "give up" football. Wonder how old school coaches like Danny feel about it.

The running back is still getting the handoff at the same...

spot, whether the QB is under center or in shotgun. Only thing being in the Shotgun does is limit the effectiveness of play action passes, the defense bites harder on the run when the QB is under center. But as far as the run game, it all starts with getting a push. Which the oline in it's fifth year under Robbie Caldwell is still failing to do.

Did you really just try to suggest Robbie Caldwell has done

Sep 14, 2015, 4:10 AM

Anything less than an incredible job with an online pretty much stitched together with random parts of random players? You do realize we haven't always pulled in studs on the line right? And our best line men all left last year leaving us with a center that's hurt every game and has periodical issues getting the snap right and a bunch of young inexperienced players. 5th year under Caldwell? Are you incapable of looking at the depth chart? Our o line was expected to be terrible this year and last and last year was actually better than most including myself expected. Robbie Caldwell has had hardly anything to work with up until this year and freshman almost never go straight from high school to being a force on the offensive line or even starting for that matter. We're lucky to have what we have, have you just not kept up with Clemson football the past 5-10 years? These are pretty widely known facts even to other fanbases.

And by parts I mean players of different positions and

pretty much whoever we can put in that's the least bad. Not parts like we've got a bunch of body parts stitched together out there.

Has nothing to do with lining up in shotgun...

Sep 14, 2015, 12:45 AM

has to do with the oline getting a push, which currently our oline still can't. Watson was under center for a few runs and the oline still didn't get any push. Other teams across the country who run a similar style of offense don't have a problem with it. But we have an oline coach who doesn't teach fundamentals.

Gee maybe you should inform the coaches of this!

Disagree with people who say it's not about the formation

Sep 14, 2015, 8:06 AM

It's only not about the formation if you're going to hand it off to the RB since the RB is lined up basically the same distance from the line of scrimmage whether the QB is under center or in the Shotgun. However, under center you also have the option to QB sneak, or give it to a h-back/fullback. The latter two options are much closer to the line of scrimmage and you aren't giving up so many yards on the initial snap.

I do agree that overall it's about push, but our OL has consistently not gotten push in years. Norton in particular get nervous when the defense stacks things in the middle. Being in Shotgun just brings the extreme negative play as being moreso of a potential outcome (ie. FSU game).
