CB play was just as bad as the Bowl game.
DTs are a weak spot compared to last year.
I was told don't expect a great defense and we need health at LB Or we are screwed.
OL played pretty well, but that is a product of the DL.
The kicking game is going to be an adventure for the foreseeable future.
The only bright spot was Cade. Which is really encouraging even if it’s a byproduct of our defense. He was actually doing well, but not perfect.
The realistic view of this was this is likely another 8-10 win team. I’m hopeful that the defense can get better and maybe just had a bad day and we are closer to 10 but we need to improve.

Yikes. I knew the secondary was going to be an issue, but this doesn't sound good at all.
The fact that we didnt get a fg kicker in the portal is mind boggling. Let's just trust the job to another freshman.

When you sign the number one kicker two years in a row the portal isn’t viable. Especially when we’re already at scholarship limits. These kickers need to perform to their ranking.

The portal isn’t viable? So we just keep two bad kickers on scholarship and live with it? That worked very well for us the past few years.
Sure, they are young and they could improve. What if they don’t? We just keep handing out scholarships to high school kickers every year till we finally get it right?

And if Mafa goes down, we are screwed at RB as well.
We have been whiffing with recruiting RB for years until this year. Many people refuse to admit that our recruiting has taken a significant hit in recent years at several key position groups, and we have been taking a lot of fallback prospects instead of using the portal.

Recruiting has dropped as NIL has became more important. Seems like we have lots of interest from top recruits until they start visiting schools and the bidding war starts. Not sure what the future holds for us and other smaller schools if NIL continues the way it is now.

The problem with filling your rosters with project prospects is that you have no room for any upgrades from the portal. Then, the prospects end up leaving anyway. It's a waste of resources and damages depth.

We did a good job recruiting Shipley and Mafa, but we've consistently missed out on our top targets after them for several years. That's why we're now relying on Green and Adams Jr. as backups for Mafa. It's frustrating because some of you are aware of this, yet still choose to post overly optimistic takes, almost as if you're trying to convince yourselves otherwise

You’re right and also it’s highly likely that UGA will know and be very able to shut Mafah down and make Cade scramble and get rid of the ball. As we’ve seen, he’s easily rattled.
Hope I’m wrong but this game ain’t going to be pretty.

Rb doesnt matter dude...we aint running it against an elite defense ...never had...the way we win natys is with an elite qb with elite wrs and a very very very good defense...the only teams we will beat running the ball are the teams we shoukd beat anyway...but we did need to be respectable on that front

I have people within the program as well.i don't comment hardly at all on here.just sit back and listen to some of the people who are dabo's right hand I guess..coaches and players both said Cade has progressed a ton since last yr.they are happy with rbs, mafah and Adam's make them very comfortable and they love Haynes if healthy and are loving Eze.Wr room is miles ahead of last yr.ol is not dominant but showing signs of life and better than last yr.dt is not much of a worry and they feel Burley who did not play will be a key piece of the rotation.the depth at d end is a concern with depth but if healthy no concern.lb,woodaz, carter, brown, mcloud, and a young Anderson who is showing he can be very versatile puts them at ease as a whole.as dabos right hand man said and what I think everyone already knew.the corners have got to step up and be way more consistent!!!and also as everyone already knew, our kicking game has to be better and more consistent.we love R.J. and Khalil to lead the safeties and help the youngsters grow and build confidence.also remember that as the season goes, players you didn't expect to do certain things on a certain level step up(tb and Khalil last yr)!!And the most important thing is the energy and confidence.last yr vs this yr.its night and day difference.we will never know until that ball is kicked off but from my source(s)(s)!!!I received a somewhat different take as dabos right hand!!!

OK. I have a different take.
Re: CB, Lukus is injured. I think we're trying out some of the younger guys, giving them reps. I also think having two new stud WR's that can actually stretch the field is having an impact.
Re: DT, I disagree. I think we have some guys that will step up and do well. I'm not worried. What does worry me is DE. We're young and not very deep. I would much rather see Woods play 3 tech, but that's where we are.
Re: OL, I disagree. They are playing better. Coaching does make a difference--who knew? I don't think it's purely a function of disappointing DL play.

If the problem were so dire at DT, they wouldn't be playing Woods at DE. The problem we have is depth at DE, and an injury to Woods or Parker is going to be a big problem.
I think the whole bit above on the defensive line is totally off base.
Parker and Woods on the edge are going to make our tackles look even better than they are. There will be hardly any teams that can double team on the interior line against us.
I think Capehart is going to be a surprise first or second round NFL pick.
We are going to be strong and deep at tackle and we are going to need luck staying healthy on the edge.
If we stay healthy at DE, we are going to have a top 10 DL

The knock on Capehart has always been canceled consistency
I've heard on any any one play he can beat ANY offensive lineman in college football and the challenge has been getting him to bring that effort every play for 4 quarters. I heard that he made huge strides the second half of last year and that internally the buzz is they feel like he can match up with anyone that lines up in front of him (and that includes UGA)
The only concern I've heard is can he sustain it all season and can he bring it every down?
Guess we’ll see.
I've heard Williams is me consistency. He's not going to knock an lineman 5 yards back like Demonte can, but he's going to be there plugging gaps and in position every play.
Neither of them have the pure atheletism of Ruke, but honestly Ruke was an NFL DE playing college tackle in my opinion.

I say trust in the position coaches on the defensive side of the ball. Eason, Rumph, Reed to get the defense figured out. They have a history of doing that. I also like that Goodwin now has assistants to help with LB technique and intensity. It was the 1st scrimmage and there’s still talent on that can be molded into what is needed for defense to be very good. I discount the bowl game because plenty of experience was not playing that day at some key positions. The younger guys are now a spring camp and part of fall camp towards being better prepared.

You are so right and as each day passes it will be more and more experience.truthfully we may not be Georgia ready but you best believe this is a better team than last yr.and if we do fall to them,we will still be alright because the talent, confidence, coaching etc. is there and many feel we could walk the board and end up right where we need ro be,back in playoff hopefully with a shot at some get back if we fall week 1

I do have a bit of bad news mixed with good news also...we can expect to lose a wr or 2 or 3 after the season....(tone-soph) (brown-soph) (tink- r fr) (wesco -fr) (tj -fr) ( Adam-jr) (hanafin-so) (troy-jr) (cole-soph) (Noble-r-fr)...it is a handful or better listed that are not going to be happy with lack of playing time!!!that's small quiet talk amongst coaches and players but it's brought so much competitiveness out of that wr room..they are looking better than we have seen the past 2 or 3 yrs.

IMHO this puts pressure on coaches to play the top talent ... Moore, Wesco, Williams, and Brown despite inexperience. From some of these posts, Kelly may be able to contribute at CB.

I’m hopeful that the defense can get better and maybe just had a bad day and we are closer to 10 but we need to improve.
you are so full of sh!t. how dare you desecrate the good name of rendrick taylor.

I wasn’t there, just told that. Just that we have a lot of work to do between now and kickoff game 1, which luckily we don’t have to be game ready yet. If the offense is clicking as it sounds I trust our defense to catch up at some point. I would’ve been more concerned about the offense still struggling. The kicking game reports make me a little nervous, we all remember the days of shaky king games.

I am not down playing your insider info. I fully believe what you are reporting about the scrimmage.
With that being said I saw first hand Capehart, Pwoo, and Parker play very well last year in real games. I’m absolutely not concerned about the DL.
As for CB. I just hope they get it together before GA. There’s enough talent there. Also Mike Reed is one of the best in the business.
Overall I’m still very confident our D will be a top 15 D by seasons end. One scrimmage isn’t going to change my mind on that. Now if we get to the end of Camp and word coming out is that the D is still in very big trouble then I’ll be concerned.

I think the DL will be fine, I was just relaying the thoughts of the person who was there… tends to be more pessimistic, which I rather have lower expectations and be surprised. My big take away was the offense is clicking and I feel like the defense will be fine at the end of the day, proven over the years. I think the main point was luckily we do not play today and have a few weeks, because if we played today and the way we did in the scrimmage it’s an 8-10 win team. But we have a few weeks to go!

Always appreciate your football insider info HLRT. I think replacing a first round talent like Ro a Ro and a gritty veteran like T Davis and not expect some dropoff is a little nieve. T Davis played a lot of snaps over his career at Clemson. Much more than Capehart, Williams and Page have so far. Davis was consistently good his whole career and I would compare his impact on the field with D Lawrence and C. Wilkins. Always thought he was more consistent than Breese. Any woo just my opinion and hoping for the best for this years Clemson football team.

100% agree… I think the DTs have more talent and potential this year if you are just asking me my opinion. Davis and rule were NFL players and overachievers.. hence the rams cowboy game today— Davis killed it. This was based on a scrimmage and we have time to improve

Jcantrell you are right.its early and people do get reports, but at the same time coaches somewhat have a good idea of what they have to work with.scrimmages do and don't mean too much.they figuring things out along with some extra experimenting.chemistry etc etc etc.i fully believe we will have a top 15 d.we lost some key pieces but also have some key pieces back and some young up and coming pieces that will eventually fill any void from ruke,td..not worried bout mukuba(spell?)loss.trotter and nate will be hard to replace, but we also got pwoo,tj,Khalil,Av who were only freshman with more experience that are stars in the making with potential to dominate! We gonna be just fine.just like the team we gotta stay positive and believe.

Lots of variables at play here. 1) who actually played significant snaps? 2) what kind of ###### did the coaches roll with or was it wide open? 3) Who was actively coaching and who was monitoring?
At the end of the day the purpose of the scrimmage is to see where you are and usually coaches don't put their best guys out there for the entirety and risk them getting hurt, it's better to see where your young guys are at.
DT is the strength of the defense. There's about 4 guys that will play in the NFL on the roster playing DT right now. Capehart, Woods, Burley, Thompson.
DE and LB are where the depth questions come into play.
Corner back might start off rough but Mike Reed always gets those guys right. Not like they don't have the raw talent on the roster for corner.
I don't think defense is what Clemson fans should be worried about. I worry more about the wr room than anything and then the OL. I have more faith in Matt Luke putting a competitive unit out there than Grisham at this point.

I agree with everything you said. I was only relaying what an observer watched and felt watching it. If the offense is playing well I think we will be da very. I feel like the defense will figure it out. Fingers crossed the offense is just that dang good. I personally love our talent at DaT but I’m not a coach and I also didn’t watch us play, but I thought it would be a strength. We shall see!!
