Wanna take a knee at a sporting event?
Jul 11, 2021, 3:16 PM

Sitting here watching the UEFA EURO final (don't know why, but here I am) and both countries' (England & Italy) National Anthem was played. EVERYBODY was standing and respecting, but right before the ball was put in play, all players from both teams took a knee for about 10 seconds to bring attention to racial injustice (and whatever else). Seems like nobody was offended nor was the press focused on it. Announcers just REPORTED on what was going on (SURPRISING!).
I'm in Switzerland watching this and it's been pretty interesting watching this "kick ball" tournament (I'm not a soccer fan).

They’ve been doing it about a year. Some fan bases known for being more hooligans like Millwall have booed the kneeing. Ukrainian and Russian fans booed the kneeing as well.
It’s been a bit of a controversy but yeah not as Not as here as the anthem stuff here

I Said When All This BS Started....

That the simple solution was that EVERYONE was required to come out for the National Anthem, hand over your heart and show respect . Then when the last note ended EVERYONE would kneel for 30 seconds and then the game would begin . It would, I thought, make both sides happy .

I tell ya what would make me happy is for these entitled athletes to be required to take a history lesson on their forefathers sacrifices made for them to even have the privilege to play.

Lol ... funny things in, a lot of those players forefathers were brought here unwillingly and considered property rather than humans. So yes they made sacrifices but it is definitely not the sacrifices you are speaking about.
The forefathers you speak of often beat, demeaned, r****d and killed hundreds of thousands of them.
So if this happened to you and your family, i think you might think twice about celebrating these "heroes"

I accidentally gave you a TU.

I don't think it deserves a TU at all.
While I understand your point about history being messy, it doesn't change the fact that the United States of today offers residents - including minorities - with an amazing opportunity to become an educated, prosperous, and productive member of society if they will work hard and take advantage of opportunities. This is especially true for athletes who get free or subsidized education simply because they are good at a sport, and the many perks and privileges that comes as a result, which are not available to non-athletes.
Our country certainly isn't perfect, but it's arguably the best on our planet, and it's certainly not one that deserves to be mocked and protested at sporting events.

So do the Russian, Cubans, North Koreans and Chinese do with their athletes. Are we a communist state too?
I swear, y'alls inability to recognize that SOME people may not be super happy about this country is astounding. Not everyone thinks like or has had the same experiences as you. Provided with the same opportunities as you. Given the same chances, connections and generational wealth as you.
America is a great country ... don't misread me. But it hasn't been great for a lot of people and that's ok. As AMERICANS we need to accept that and try it make it great for them too instead of telling them they're unappreciative and lazy.

I was always taught not to talk about politics at work.

Likewise, I don’t think it’s appropriate for athletes to talk about it at work either.
It isn’t a lot to ask for athletes to respect the many people who have fought for this country, by participating in the national anthem. All of this kneeling and refusing to be respectful is a slap in the face to the many men and women who have fought for our country.
If someone, including an athlete, feels that injustices are occurring and they want to promote awareness and change, do it elsewhere. Speak at an event. Write a book. Start a nonprofit. Post on social media. But don’t force it down our throats and use it as an excuse to disrespect our country. That’s childish, not to mention a super ineffective way to promote change.

You stated that perfectly! As I have said from the beginning of this "kneeling for the anthem" BS...Protest all you want...there are many legitimate ways to protest...but kneeling for the anthem is one of the most ill-conceived, dumbest, and disrespectful ideas anyone could have come up with!!

But when they do they're told to shut up and dribble. They're just dumb jocks who don't know anything. Or still privileged people who were given chances to be rich and should appreciate it. (as you argued).
You were taught not to intertwine politics and work. Cool. Others weren't. They were told to shut up and do as the bossman said. And if they opened their mouth theyd be whipped or fired.

How often have you experienced these beatings or firings? How often have you witnessed these of others? Have any data that would support systemic beatings and firings in any current generations? I’ve known dozens of college athletes as a student and now an adult and don’t recall a one of any color or nationality noting being beaten or fired for their political or social demographic.

Provide me one single example of a country whose government provides less fortunate citizens with wealth and opportunities, more than America has for the past 20+ years.
Go ahead, I’ll wait.

New Zealand. Australia. Singapore. Sweden. Norway. Finland. Denmark. Ireland.
All of them are freer countries by rank than America. All of their economies have grown exponentially the last twenty years. They're safer. Provide better education's. Have cleaner environments.
By all accounts provide more and better opportunities than the US. Prove me wrong. I'll wait.
